100% on the fisherman that was chumming off of the pier. What a yayhoo. Breaking the law and inviting a baby great white over there.

SUP is awesome. I'll stick to Newport Harbor though, or any harbor for that matter. Plenty of space and my greatest danger is a tourists going 7 knots in a Duffy. Drunk Human > Hungry Shark.

What a bunch of babies!
And you call yourself Trojans? Unbelievable!
Are you afraid of the beach too? Humming birds? Butterflies?

No just great whites, hammer heads and any other man eater that I may run into, my family told me discretion is the better part of valor and I believe them.

Haha, that's pretty rad. I know a few guys that have gone free diving with Sharks. One definitely thinks life revolves around "YOLO" moments. And I know shark attacks are extremely rare but baby great whites love the South Bay. And I'm not trying to be a statistic. I do surf though.

Well ok, I guess I can give you a pass, but only because you surf.

Re: OT: Shark Attack

Come on people, I've been surfing since 1967 and have exactly 2 encounters with sharks. Once in the 70's at the Seal Beach jetty( never found out what kind of shark) once in the 90's at San Onofre ( A thresher), and If I ever get bite i'm going to start playing the lottery !

Haha HB as in Huntington or Hermosa? My parents live in Newport and Grandparents have for a long time so I've been surfing in Newport for as long as I can remember. I saw an approximately 5 ft thresher once. What can be scary about those is they attack with their tail that practically doubles up as a carving knife. Never heard of it happening to a human, but those bad boys hunt with their tails and could definitely decapitate a human. There are plenty of them outside the harbor too and I've caught a few fishing.

I think what gets me about SUP more than surfing is it makes you more observant of what is below you.

Re: OT: Shark Attack

I loved to surf when I lived in CA. I lived further north, so I had to learn and ply my skills at Ocean Beach in San Fran. Never had a shark encounter but something did brush my leg one time. Scared the crap outta me and sent me home for the day but I figured it was probably a seal, due to the proximity of Seal Rock. That reminds me of a story. There was a surf shop at Ocean Beach that I bought my first surf board from. It had a large cartoon picture above the counter, of 2 surfers sitting on their boards, in the ocean. One guy says "do you think you can swim faster than a shark?". Other guy says "I don't have to swim faster than a shark. I just have to swim faster than you!"

Re: OT: Shark Attack

I dont know if we were meant to swim with the sharks we would have gills and wings to fly instead of planes burns to much carbon anyway, just ask Al Gore.

Re: OT: Shark Attack

Well, if you did Surf, you would never confuse HB with Hermosa Beach.  I was one of the Cliff Putos back in the late 50's and 60's.  If you came up from Hermosa Beach to Surf the Cliffs, you probably would have never got out on the water unless you knew someone.   But as nice as we were, we would have directed you to the Steam Plant(Sting Ray Bay), I think VC only gets that joke.  Golden Bear baby, Golden Bear. pirate
