You can lose and advance in several sports.
Track and Field.
Swimming.
College Baseball.
College Football.
Teams that have lost advance all the time in the NFL.  Only one team has advanced to be Superbowl champs that hasn't lost a game.

Don't forget about the TIES!! It's in our culture..

America is capable of becoming a powerhouse in soccer, since majority of us started off with our 1st youth sports in soccer or Little League baseball.

Then, most people usually quit soccer and start playing football around middle school.

Very few continues on playing soccer in high school, because the stereotype which we have in this sport, is that soccer is a girls sport. Why do you think the US women are the best in the world? They continue on to play the sport.

If the US men continue on like the way women do, Team USA could also be a soccer powerhouse.

But it's not in our culture. We like high scoring, fast paced game and soccer is none of that. But most important of all, none of us can't stand TIES.

If our culture loves tie game, then why would NCAA put in a new OT rule for college football back in 96??

NOT TRUE!   The UCLA football team lost and still advanced to the PAC 12 Championship game a few years ago.

The first round is a lot like the regular season in the NFL or any other pro sport. Now is the true playoffs.
11 National Titles | 32 Bowl Victories | 161 All-Americans | 7 Heisman Winners | 77 NFL 1st Rounders | 11 NFL Hall of Famers

I PLAYED SOCCER IN PUBLIC SCHOOL MANY MOONS AGO I NEVER UNDERSTOOD NOR LIKED PLAYING TO A TIE AND I STILL DON'T, I ALWAYS FELT THE RULES SLOWED THE GAME IN SCORING AND MADE IT TO ME A GAME WHERE MORE PLAYERS WOUND KISSING THEIR SISTER BY PLAYING TO A TIE.

it'd be cool if penalty shots were a normal thing

i think in the earlier stages of the MLS it was normal, though i'd have to check

putting an OT in would be nice...

I don't get this game at all.  But when that Algerian guy head butt that Italian guy in the heart.  I could get on board with more of that. That was fun for everyone.

I liked to run as a kid, I played right forward in AYSO until if I remember right 12 years old. The problem for me was coaching, we didn't really have many people available that really understood the game. The youth nowadays are being given more instruction on how to play the game, not just drill and kill. I think this bodes well for the future as soccer is a thinking game as much as it is skill. I only wish I could have played with the knowledge I have now.
