Re: Way to go Danica
Daytona is a lot about luck. Getting caught up in a big wreck is always a danger. Either stay in front with a fast car (which she has) or stay out back and wait for the last 20 laps seems to be the survival strategy.
Middle pack is suicide.
She has the car to win.
Lots of luck, a loyal draft partner and a decent car are the keys to winning Daytona, in that order.

Lots of luck, a loyal draft partner and a decent car are the keys to winning Daytona, in that order. it sounds like you understand the tactical part about NASCAR. The more I research it, the more fascinating it gets. Each track is different and the restrictor plate races are a unique animal. Everyone's car is pretty much equal. At most tracks the fastest car and skill wins unless it's a gas mileage type race. Daytona has big wrecks that wipe out lots good and bad cars. So luck really is a factor. NASCAR fans aren't ALL drunken rednecks. I like NASCAR but I usually sleep through the middle of the races, some are really boring to me (hence, NAPCAR at my house). And the season is 36 races, I think. 25 would be better. Quit just in time for football season. I always watch the Browns over any NASCAR race. It's like baseball. So many games (races) it's not a big deal if you miss a few.

RE: Way to go Danica
elf, i have read about the fuel mileage races. those sound like more strategy is used moreso than just basic race tactics--it takes into account when to pit, when to pass people, when to make adjustments and how to compensate for the other teams doing the same thing, vs. basic tactics like drafting in the race, etc, etc.
NASCAR is not a sport for dummies...I totally respect what they do. The pit crews themselves have to be in shape as well. A lot of good posts in this thread.

she'll do fine on these tracks where she can keep the throttle down... when she actually has to drive she'll be mid pack, just as she was in Nationwide and IndyCar outside of the Indy 500.

Re: Way to go Danica
Not a big fan of racing or Danica. Great that she has been able to market her sex-appeal and such. If that is what you are into. I'm not really into these females who make cajillions marketing their bodies. Beyond the fantasy, its all pretty shallow.
She wants to be known as a racer but does everything in her power to market herself as a sex symbol of racing.
Bottom line is, I could care less about her sport, but her pictorials have perked my interest. And that is something she created on her own. So, she has been a positive marketing figure for the sport. Like it or not. To me , its slightly interesting and she has gotten my attention.

Yes a racer, sat up high in turn one @IMS during Danica's qualifying her rookie year for the 500. She went into turn one around 225 mph sideways, she didn't lift at all and went on to qualify 4th @ 228 mph. That's a racer.

For my money, Sarah Fisher was a better driver but had worse equipment because she isn't as pretty as Danica... just my opinion Danica has always had a top flight team, Rahal/Letterman, Andretti, Stewart/Hass (Hendrick engines!!) that helps a ton...

Keep an eye out for Johanna Long out of Pensacola. She will soon run circles around Danica Patrick.

I personally heard this because I was listening to her radio frequency at the race. Besides Johanna isn't to bad looking herself and she was tagged for NASCAR long before anyone knew Danica was leaving IndyCar.
