Window tint laws
Anyone here know what the actual window tint laws are in OH? I know they can vary from county to county. I live in Summit. Wanted to get the wife's car tinted but I keep hearing different numbers for what is acceptable. Google search has been no help at all. Back in 2003 I had all 20% and I was fine for 4 years until the car got totaled.
I have heard 35% is fine now and someone even said the law has been changed to 50%...
Just wondered if anyone here had the scoop.
Some day, a real rain will come and wash all the scum off the streets

Re: Window tint laws
I think I used to get 35% in the front and 20% in all the rear windows of my car. Got a new one 2 years ago and still haven't gotten it tinted.
I suggest you call or visit the shop that will do the tint. I used to use Zeibart and they would always tell you what's legal or not.

Re: Window tint laws
Per the Ohio Dept of Public Safety, it says that windows must allow 50% light transmission, plus or minus 3 percent.
Also, the degree of darkness does not vary from county to county. It's the same state law appliacable to all 88 counties.

Just wondered if anyone here had the scoop. Call up Horizon Audio and ask Scott what the legal limits are, he'll know. They do good work there too.
I could be suave... but how many crude guys do you know?

Re: Window tint laws
I was pulled over in a work vehicle that was wrapped covering the back windows. The cop told me it had to be 50%. He was acting like he was going to make me peel it off there. I called my boss who call the guy who did the wrap and was told it was 50% and that they had tested it . I told the cop this. He pull out some devise and put it on the window. He got quit and did not tell me what it read. He put it away and told me it would have redone or removed. The guy was a motorcycle douch cop. We never changed and never had another problem. I guess it depends on the cop and whether or not they want to be a prick. To add to that I was late to my job because of the idiot costing me money. I was not speeding just trying to make a living honestly. I'm sure the whole time he had me pulled over some real crime was happening.

A friend of mine got pulled over for his window tint about 10 years ago. He told the cop he was well below the legal limit according to where he had it done, but the cop didn't want to hear it and wrote the ticket anyway. The cop did no tests on his windows. He went to traffic court with all his paperwork from the shop saying he was legal and some sort of reading that showed he was legal. The judge would not even look at it and upheld the ticket plus court costs.

Re: Window tint laws
Darkness of tint is measured by Visible Light Transmission percentage(VLT%). In Ohio, this percentage refers to percentage of visible light allowed in through the combination of film and the window. Ohio tint law enacted in 2004-The front windshield is allowed non reflective tint on the top 5 inches of the windshield only, front passenger and drivers windows must allow more than 50% of light in, and the rears any darkness can be used. I have like 33%, been pulled over three times got one ticket and all three times they measured with their tint measuring device , the car cost me $200 to tint whole car at ziebart the ticket cost me $170, just a fyi in case you want to chance it and go darker. Hope this helps

This is the stuff that burns me up. At what point do you stop calling it protecting and serving and start calling it a money making schemes. Start fighting real crime. mechmat wrote:

Re: Window tint laws
Windshield has to let 70% light to pass through, front sides 50% and rear no restrictions.

Re: Window tint laws
Are you going to add the chain license plate holder and neon blue light under the car too?
Oh...and don't forget the fuzzy dice!

Re: Window tint laws
During our law update last year (Montgomery county) it was noted that we no longer need to use the tint-meters (i never did because i think the law is stupid). Our prosecutors stated it is now officer discretion and should be based on officer safety on how well we can or cannot see the person in the car. Because I have never written someone for this and don't plan on it I wasn't really listening so I don't know whether it was a new city revision, county, or state issue.
Sorry to confuse the issue.

Re: Window tint laws
I am a retired police officer. I learned to use a drivers license to check window tint; if you could read it through the tint, the glass was legal.
