Browns sign a punter. A PUNTER!!

Here comes the press release:

BROWNS SIGN PUNTER SPENCER LANNING

The Cleveland Browns today signed punter Spencer Lanning, the team announced.

Originally signed as an undrafted free agent by the Chicago Bears on July 26, 2011, Lanning spent training camp with the Browns last season before being waived on August 26, 2012. He has also spent time with Jacksonville and the New York Jets. Lanning was a four-year letterman at the University of South Carolina (2007-10) who finished his career with 171 punts for a 42.6-yard average and 46 punts inside the 20-yard line. He also served as a kicker during his final two collegiate seasons, connecting on 34 of 44 field goal attempts and 80 of 84 PATs. A native of Rock Hill, South Carolina, the 5-11, 200-pound Lanning attended York Comprehensive High School in South Carolina. He was born May 21, 1988. His full bio can be found on page 108 of the 2012 Cleveland Browns media guide.

'Bout time.  We went through all of last season without one.

5'11" and 200lb.?

This guy seems a little bigger than the average punter, no?  If he doubles as the holder I could see him pick it up and run or stand up to take a direct snap and run on a fake FG.  At least he wouldn't break in half.

2013 NFL Free Agents - Punters:

  1. Britton Colquitt (RFA), P, Broncos. Age: 28.
Britton Colquitt was third in net punting this season.
  2. Kevin Huber, P, Bengals. Age: 28.
Kevin Huber was fourth in net punting among starters in 2012.
  3. Reggie Hodges, P, Browns. Age: 31.
Despite tearing his Achilles last year, Reggie Hodges maintained the 10th-best net punting average in 2012.

I suspect that has as much to do with our coverage as it does with Reggie's kicking.

He was also a kicker?  The writing is on the wall....  Bye bye Phil Dawson.  It has been a great ride.

Actually it has much to do with Walter Football messing up their research as it does with Reggie's kicking - he was 32nd in net punting average not 10th: NFL net punting ave stats

Im really surprised this day and age that we aren't moving towards one man that can handle all of the kicking and punting duties... I realize then the increased risk of injury, but the freak athletes that exist now make it seem totally possible to me.

Some day, a real rain will come and wash all the scum off the streets

The last kicker that I remember doing both was Don Cockroft and that was 30 years ago.
