Homebrewing
Any homebrewers in here?
I'm working on a Black IPA tonight.
I'm using plastic pails for the primary but have thought about switching to glass carboys. Any thoughts?

Someday I'll have to give this homebrew a try.

RE: Homebrewing
Getting more in to it. Just got a 5 gallon carboy and setup. And a bottle capper. What a fun toy.
My next experiment is going to be some form of wheat.
I'd recommend the glass carboy over the plastic.

I'd recommend the glass carboy over the plastic. What were you doing before you got the bottle capper? I've heard good things about Northern Brewer's American Wheat but haven't tried it myself: http://www.northernbrewer.com/...xtract-kit.htmlI have done a Hefeweizen from them that turned out pretty well but I think an all-grain batch would be better.

RE: Homebrewing
Before the bottle capper - cheating. 16oz plastic bottles (I think they were originally Miller Light). Works pretty well because they have a wide mouth, which makes it much easier to add the sugar.

You should get in touch with BuzzDraft. (The "Draft" in his name is a hint...)
When I did homebrew, I used the same setup you're using now. Worked fine.

Re: Homebrewing
I brew 5-6 times a year, good fun. Glass carboys are definitely the way to go.
Bottling is a pain, I usually split it up and do 6 half gallon growlers (using new caps and that white plumbers tape) and the rest in 22oz bottles. Plus you get the pleasure of procuring additional bottles.
The next investment i'd make is a wort cooler, on of those copper spirals. Really cuts down on the time it takes, literally hours less.
I've stuck with mostly brown ales, as they are my favorite to drink, plus are a bit more forgiving. Will try an unfiltered wheat beer soon though for my wife.
Screwed up my last batch somehow, let some bacteria in some where in the process. Nice mold on top of my carboy. dohhhh....
Good Luck

Re: Homebrewing
I've been brewing off and on for 12 years or so, but picked it up seriously after I moved into a bigger house. After that, I started all-grain brewing for the past 3 years I brew about twice a month or more and keg mine.
I use the ol' Igloo coolers converted to a mash and lauter tun, have a 10 gallon brew pot and propane burner outside. I can fit two corny kegs in my little apartment fridge and still have lots of room for other beverages and additional hops and such.
If I bottle, I usually bottle off the kegging lines.
This year I intend to enter some homebew contests. I have a killer IPA but there are too many in that category.
Oh, and definitely go with glass carboys (no scratching, easy to clean, you can see the wort a lot easier, less room for oxygen to ruin your brew).

My girlfriend makes homemade wine. Here's a VIDEO of her stomping grapes when the local news did a story on her.

Good Luck You sure it's mold and not some leftover krausen? I do a mix of 22oz and 12oz bottles. The 12oz are better for giving away.

Re: Homebrewing
Been all grain brewing for over three years now. Spent a week at uc davis brew school in January and was a great experience. I brew a couple times a month and go pony keg, so much easi and better then bottling. Going to do a collaborative brew with a local and get my foot in the raft brewing world. I love brewing beer, a true labor of love.
