Re: Rosetta Stone
I think it depends a lot on what style you learn best with. I used Fluenz to study Mandarin and liked it a lot. I'm not a big Rosetta Stone fan because I don't like learning by repetition and I like to visualize it in English first.
Fluenz has CDs (and is on mobile devices now) and shows the English first (if you want). But again, if you are comfortable with that style, Rosetta is one of the most popular ones out there.

Re: Rosetta Stone
I almost bought it last week on Amazon's deal of the day to learn Italian. I never heard bad about it, but you can read through the user reviews:

Just move to the country your talking about.
You'll have a second chance at life AND learn a language for free.
Or you'll starve to death.
Either way, you're a winner in my book.
I could be suave... but how many crude guys do you know?

I like the honesty of the guy on the commercial who says he was "a miserable failure." He could have just said it didn't work out, instead he went full idiot.
I am kicking around learning Italian because my girlfriend's parents don't a speaka da good Inglesh, so if anyone has tried this, I'd love to hear about it.

Re: Rosetta Stone
Dunno, I buy from the dispensary, with a medical card. Oh, plus I don't really smoke flowers anymore, pretty much just heat up a titanium nail and vaporize hash wax. About 70-80% THC, one hit is like smoking a whole joint. Lovely. HarleyD wrote: What are the tourist prices for weed like these days?

That's one downside of living in a socially backward place like Florida.
Medical marijuana here is about as likely as election reform.
Ignorant crackers.

I bought 1 of those learn a language cd's that you listen to while you sleep. The damn cd must have skips, because all that I can do is stutter in Spanish.

Re: Rosetta Stone
I bought it for spanish and found it pretty helpful as I was forced to stay engaged. Unfortunately, I got about half way through it before running out of time. I justified the cost figuring that my daughter could use it when she gets a little older.
Immersion is probably the best way and I know that some universities offer and immersion class where you can go stay in the dorms for 2 weeks over summer and learn by immersion. This would be more helpful to prepare if you were going to be moving to another country.

Re: Rosetta Stone
This is exactly why I've always chosen to live in strictly English speaking countries. If you consider Scotland to be an English speaking country, that is.

Re: Rosetta Stone
I don't know about moving to another country. I lived in Korea for a year and didn't learn more than two or three sentences . Why ? Because most everyone spoke English . http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kdfXljz50iU

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kdfXljz50iU That's interesting - I lived there for two years (church Mission). I was required to learn Korean which is an extremely difficult language for English speakers (one of the toughest). The younger folks knew some English, but it was pretty rudimentary. But that was 20 years ago.

But that was 20 years ago. The townspeople more or less spoke Korean only. I was in the armed forces. Most of the people who depended upon the army bases spoke english sort of. The KATUSAs spoke english. A few years of English is required in schools for most if I'm not mistaken. Definitely one would need to learn Korean to adapt over there. The environment I was in didn't make it a necessity.

Re: Rosetta Stone
The program is very detail oriented.. You learn to speak and read the new language via word/picture association. (emphasis on proper pronunciation and grammar) A key pad will also appear for you to write the words and sentences.. There are word association games to play to help with memory.. You are encouraged to have live "chat" sessions with their employees. It is everything I was hoping for.. Now we'll see how well I do...

Re: Rosetta Stone
i tried the "stone" for russian, and can use very rudimentary words from just a few of their lessons. i'm sure if i went through the whole program, it would be very effective.
i have heard the pimsleur approach is also very good. but i have not tried it yet.
