It's a shame how the download format eliminated what was the "tangible" part of the marketing angle.  Even the actual decal in the center of the old LP's was cool.

Re: Favorite LP/CD art

This is the back cover to the album "One Size Fits All" by Frank Zappa.  There's just so much going on in there you could spend hours on it.  The names of the constellations and the stars are all filled in and it's pretty hilarious.

I contacted the artist, Cal Schenkel, about getting an enlarged version of it and he offered to re-paint me an enlarged version of the original for way more than I was prepared to spend.

It's a shame, it's almost illegible on the CD I have.  In fact a lot of really awesome album art fares very badly when reduced to the CD Jewel Box format (try reading the short story on the inside cover of Genesis' "The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway...a great story renedered nearly impossibly small in the move from LP to CD)

Subsequent CD releases of One Size Fits All have a fold out insert that opens up to something closer to the original 12" vinyl size and recaptures most of its' glory.

I did find this .jpg that is pretty much readable to share.

Enjoy...

Yes' "Relayer".  Done with Patrick Moraz right after Rick Wakeman quit...the first time.

The Gates Of Delerium is an incredible song.  Fills the entire first side.

When Wakeman rejoined he refused to play any of this stuff for years, which was a shame.

Rick Wakeman is one of the great keyboard players of all time (just ask him) but he isn't a terribly well adjusted person.

I was a metal head in high school.

Always liked the early Metallica covers:

Megadeth had some cool ones too:

Got into Pink Floyd by listening to this in high school. Always thought the art work was pretty bad ass.

Was also a big fan of Guns n' Roses:

The Use Your Illusion albums were taken from Raphael's "School of Athens" (top row on the right towards the middle).

Those Mothers albums are hard to beat...

This would always catch the eye back in the day:

I'd post the original version of the Blind Faith album cover, but it's definitely not safe for work.

Don't blame me, I voted for Pat Paulsen.
