What?  Late night television doesn't count?!

Not a single mention of the longest running television show ever... The Tonight Show!  Any version... Jack Paar, Steve Allen or Johnny Carson.  I haven't watched it since Carson retired.

At least Carroll Burnett was mentioned a couple times.

Going way, way back; Sid Caesar's Your Show of Shows.  The lineup of actors and writers on that show that became famous is staggering.   Sort of like the early Twilight Zone and Outer Limits episodes.

I'm not sure I could name a top 5.  Just completely off the cuff:

24
Game of Thrones
Band of Brothers
Early SNL
Star Trek

Other shows that are great:

The Outer Limits
The Wild Wild West
Seinfeld
Ed Sullivan (particularly when The Beatles were on)

And yes, YBD, Carol Burnett's show was awesome.

I didn't see Nothern Exposure listed so I'll put that one out there as well.

Lots of good ones already.

Have already been a couple mentions of "The Tonight Show," including my own (page 1). I also included "The Carol Burnett Show."

But your point about programs from The Golden Age of Television (1950s, early 1960s) is spot on. Was initially going to list a few but figured most on these forums were oblivious to them since they weren't alive or old enough to appreciate them! Granted, some of the shows from that era were outright bombs. Yet quite a few of the good ones became classics.

Sid Caesar-Imogene Coca, Jack Paar, Steve Allen were pioneers and great performers. Allen in particular was highly intelligent. He created "The Tonight Show" and for a while had a popular Sunday night show opposite Ed Sullivan.

Others: Milton Berle; Jack Benny; Jackie Gleason; Danny Thomas; Phil Silvers; Red Skelton; Grocho Marx ("You Bet Your Life"); George Burns-Gracie Allen; "Amos 'n' Andy;" "Playhouse 90" (the ambitious anthology series performed live); "Studio One" (live drama, received Emmy nominations every year 1950-1958);"The United States Steel Hour" (another dramatic anthology series performed live); "Alfred Hitchcock Presents;" "Gunsmoke"; "Have Gun-Will Travel;" "Rawhide;" "Dragnet;" "Perry Mason"; and "Omnibus" (a cultural series hosted by Alastair Cooke).

I don't think we'd fight over the remote if we were watching TV together as your top 3 are among my favorites. Add McHale's Navy, Hogan's Heroes, Mission Impossible and 24 to it and I'd have no reason to get off from the couch.

Man, I was a toddler back then and couldn't get enough of it. My mom thought it was too violent but luckily my dad came to the rescue. Of course, I don't remember any of this.

If we're giving credit to the golden age of TV I have to give a shout out to Ernie Kovacs.

Ernie didn't have a "signature" show.  He did do the late night "Ernie Kovacs Show" in the late 50's and was a frequent guest host of The Tonight Show.

Ernie was a pioneer of absurdist TV sketch comedy as well as video tricks/effects used for comedic impact.

He is cited as an influence by comedy greats for the last 50 years.  From Rowan & Martin to Conan O'Brien.

I'm sure there's plenty of his stuff available on YouTube, albeit probably Black and White.

He was tragically killed in a car accident on his way home from a party at Milton Berle's home in 1962, ten days shy of his 43rd birthday.

For you enjoyment (probably his most famous) Nairobi Trio.

Lots more from the Golden Age here.  Intro by Ernie as Percy Dovetonsils.

About 80% of this stuff would piss someone off today so it probably would never make it onto the air.

That just reminded me of another show... Three Stooges. How about Ghoulardi... that was pretty bomb how he would put himself in the movie..

  2. Soap was fantastic...way ahead of its time...I have the whole series (4 seasons) on DVD.  When Burt thought he could make himself invisible...classic!
  3. I also think the original Law & Order was awesome although SVU has had better staying power.

What's on my DVR schedule right now:
  • Drama: Criminal Minds, CSI, CSI: NY and Law & Order: SVU
  • Comedy: Big Bang, How I Met Your Mother and The Middle

Soap!  Damn, I need to add that to my list too.  I was like 13 years old when that was on, but that was a classic.  The ventriliquist was hilarious in that as well.

Percy Dovetonsils was clearly the inspiration for Bob Wells' "Readings By Robert" bits on the old Hoolihan and Big Chuck Show.

Re: Five best TV series of all time

Anybody remember "The Winky Dink and You" show? You had to buy a special vinyl sheet that went over the TV screen and in certain parts of the show you had to draw stuff on the screen with crayons to save Winky Dink, like a bridge or a parachute.

I got my first ass whooping because of that show. I didn't have the special sheet that covered the TV screen and just drew straight on the glass with crayons. My ass was sore for a week.

+1000.  I just showed my 17 year old son that clip a couple of weeks ago.  One of the best single episodes in sitcom history.

Re: Five best TV series of all time

The REAL definitive list:

Cheers - multiple Emmys and it still holds up in re-runs today
Miami Vice - doesn't hold up well today (kinda cheesy), but very dark, edgy at the time
The Simpsons - another multiple Emmy winner and greatest animated series in tv history. Fact.
Battlestar Galactica (2nd series) - great acting with political issues that are still in the news today + sci fi
Buffy the Vampire Slayer - ok, this one was just a guilty pleasure of mine that I never missed.

Has no one mentioned Da Ali G Show yet?

Glaring omission, if so.  I know it's been a while, but I shouldn't have forgotten that one.  Definitely Top 5, if, you know, I had a Top 5.
