Was the black-soda poll inappropriate?

I have to believe that most of you don't believe that I intended any ill will.

For those who do, I only ask that you don't be a coward. Stand by your opinion.

Did that poll lead you to believe that Griz is rac.ist?

  1. Poll closed on 11/11/2009
  2. Yes: 6 votes
  3. Of course not.: 23 votes
  4. :ryangetty: 10 votes

this poll brings up an interesting debate, of what constitutes rac*sm? I don't think ill will is a prerequisite to rac*sm

Re: Was the black-soda poll inappropriate?

it is all good fun down here.

Society has regressed to the point where we can't even discuss demographic preferences without someone going nuts. What is amazing to me is how the minority opinion must always be protected to the point of restricting free speech and passing judgement on those who exercise their free speech with innocent intent, but the majority opinion must be allowed to be prosecuted with impugnity by society. So it is inappropriate to discuss what sort of soft drink a certain demographic group would prefer, because that would offend them, but it is absolutely appropriate to permit public displays of artwork where someone pisses on Jesus, because we must protect the artist.

Pollland needs to eschew the shackles of political correctness. I trust that each and every poster down here would not judge a person by the color of their skin. So it is safe to cross the lines, and offend everybody equally.

I'm glad you said that.

Re: Was the black-soda poll inappropriate?

It depends completely on the context. Among strangers, I would say that the poll is innappropriate (poll failure because the topic doesn't match the poll question). Because who knows who has a klan outfit in the closet. Among friends, who know something about each other, it can be fine.

Here, with ambigious relationships, I think it is probably inappropriate.

A key point.

It is how the comment will be recieved that is relevant, not how it was intended.

Would you consider a poll asking if Asians were superior at math to be ******?   I would.  It's a generalization tied to a specific race.  It doesn't matter if it's positive, negative, or neutral.   So in that regard my opinion is yes.

I said yes.

I didn't say yes because I found it inappropriate, though.

Naked babys are found to be inappropriate these days. Of course something that can be misconstrued as a racíst comment is going to be found inappropriate.

Yeah, major Thanks Koesters poll fail on my part, because the question doesn't match the intent.

My real question is, do you think I'm a rac.ist?

And if you do, I want you to be open and honest about it. That's all.

I think stainless', Jabba's and Bot's point is reasonable. Intent, and perception are two different things.

I think it is important to say that the poll can be innappropriate without saying the pollster is a raycist.

I don't pass any judgement on someone I really know nothing about. But there is nothing you have done on this board that should lead anyone to suggest you are a raycist.

I think Griz is rolling at a 1,000:1 serious to not serious ratio these days.

What ever happened to he who never takes anything seriously?

What's with Bostonians using the "wee bit" phrase?  Is it the Irish in them?  ;-)
