Re: What makes losing football?
"Your problem lies in your blind love for all things lerner."
-- Easy now, kimosabe. If nothing else, Lerner is/will be old news very soon. With the Browns latest game and a new owner structure coming in, let's look to the here and now.
"A group without a leader fails."
-- Uh, well we are talking about "losing football". So maybe Lerner does come into play. And I agree that a sustained atmosphere of defeat and a sustained environment of incompetence can be traced to the leader ultimately.
A short term problem and a unique incompetence may be something that goes to an indivdual. If the leadership is good, it will deal with this and move on. If not, the problems remain or are replaced with other problems.
I- humbly- kind of like my earlier post upon further review:
Losing football is: The inability to perceive or acquire the needed FO personnel which leads to the inability to perceive or acquire the needed coaching personnel which leads to the inability of the power structure to perceive, acquire and develop the needed players.
This inability can start at the level of the owner and emanate outward or it can exist- for a certain time- within the existing structure by bad hirings, bad plans or bad execution of plans.
It is a result of bad judgement ultimately and the inability to react effectively to that.
Going from "losing football" to "winning football" is generally a process and is one that may go undetected for a time until the effect is seen on the football field.
-- Hopefully whoever is coming in will have a grasp on losing and winning football and will make moves that improve the Browns.

so now my question is did Heckert get dumber?
Or do you too subscribe to the cartoonish myth of Reid as philosopher king & sole staff executive in Philly? Or that some salary cap prick drafted players? Thought not.
Philly never won it all & choked away quite a few NFC title games but they alway had talent despite many high round misses as well. So wither Tom?
The whole leader dependent thing is too western for me, man. ;)

-- Either I'm too drunk or you are. Or both of us are!
If a team has long-term problems, the issue for that continued sustainability lies with leadership. Short-term problems- that are dealt with and fixed- can be laid at individuals' doors while they last. As long as they are short-term and are dealt with.
Ultimately the environment that leads to winning or losing is a "leader dependent thing"- to put it in your terms.
We have the record since the Browns came back in 1999 to look at. Despite some moments of glory, not so good. Whatever reasons or justifications you want to make.
Now we have "new" leadership. We will see where that goes. Heck, even though the bar isn't too high, maybe it'll be worse than before. That would really be a "Man Bites Dog" story.
Hey, is that whole "western" thing some kind of back-handed East Coast bias of yours? Since the Giants increased their lead tonight, I'll forgive you.
