No sense rushing judgement after one game, but a 5 QB rating? Certainly, the concern begins now. They have all their eggs in the Weeden basket. They have no choice but to just try to make this work. The way they dismissed Colt as a viable option makes it embarrassing to go to him, even temporarily. No one sane is saying they should abandon Weeden for Colt... it just might help for Weeds to watch a game or two. Colt seems to know the offense better right now. Weeden can't wink and finger gesture to Blackmon to beat defenses in this offense. It's complex. He's been all smiles and confidence, and so have the coaches, but the truth began to be revealed Sunday.
This is one of those times when the team becomes the key. If the D shakes this off, adjusts the run defense, and continues to keep them in games; and if the Oline rallies around their young QB to protect his pocket and run block; and if the WR's suck it up and pick up their games; then this might turn around. They lost by 1, and would have won with the most mediocre of QB play. Weeden might not have to excel so much as just manage the game better and take care of the ball. The latter is something Colt can help him with.
Shurmer will probably screw up any team rallying though... by dumbing down an already remedial offense for his QB. That will tip off the opposing D even more, and generate even more high pressure 3rd and longs. What this situation calls for is clever, less predictable play-calling to take pressure OFF the QB. If only we had a known, great play-caller in the organization.
Other points:
- I agree that Marecic is a waste, and have felt so since he let his first preseason pass hit him in the facemask last year, after Shurmer has misrepresented him as a good receiver out of the backfield. I still believe that Shurmer hand selected him.
- Little is too young to give up on. WR's can take a while. But I
would demote him for a few games if he drops another key pass before he catches his next TD.
- This team is loaded at TE and hardly targeted them yesterday.
- No veteran QB and no veteran WR on this team. Hmmm... smart.

If it is going to take 3 years for him to be proficient in this offense enough to some games for us, then he is 32, and just starting his career, when most QBs start hitting their strides starting somewhere around 25-27 years old. Weeden will be nearly retired by the time that happens if at all. If the light does come on eventually, yes, we could get about 4 good years out of him, maybe 6 at the most if we are lucky...but he is way...way...way behind the curve of similarly aged QBs both in development and knowledge of the NFL game.
Yeah...this is why I hate the draft obsession most fans have. They decide a player was a bad pick for this, that and the other thing and then they look to be proven right.
There is nothing written in stone that it will take Weeden three years to be proficient in this offense.
Weeden could light it up this year....very true...but what concerns me is that I felt I saw nothing from him in preseason other than a little extra zip on the ball. He showed nothing extrodinary in any live action to date. Nothing that indicates first round status, or even that showed he should be starting.
There is nothing written in stone that it might take him three years to develop, however, there is this guy called Holmgren that stated it takes about 3 years to fully evaluate and develop a QB, and for that QB to learn and get comfortable in the WCO.
So yah, it's not written in stone...and maybe Weeden is a QB genius with football IQ off the charts in the Kosar range, but he's 29, so we have to hope....no PRAY...it doesn't take 3 years to develop that guy. I say guy....cuz no way would anyone ever call him kid, or youngin.
