Re: Evaluation...BPA....Need

Isn't it amazing that no matter how awesome a coach or FO type was before they got to the Browns they immediately become blithering idiots once in Cleveland?

And maybe even more amazing, once they leave Cleveland they become really good at their jobs again.

Yeah but Gary that's not a creation of the fans minds. That's a results observation.

Why would Heckert draft 2 6th rounders on day two and come away with out a WR is ...well.....words can not explain.

WR is easy. They rated three to four WRs as good enough to upgrade the Browns WRs. After that, they see the talent as no better. Why draft WRs that aren't any better than what you have if you want to upgrade?

The Browns tried at least twice to move up to get one of those WRs and they couldn't get it done.

As to the 6th rounders.. a couple possibilities present themselves. First, the Browns had these players graded a lot higher than the pundits and knew some other teams did as well. For instance, Hughes was injured during the Combine. Perhaps he showed a lot more than expected at his Pro Day or individual workout for the Browns.  Maybe he's the perfect guy to spell Rubin because there was a pretty big fall off when the big guy took a blow.

Or, maybe the Browns have plans for their 4th and 5th round picks and wanted to get these guys now to free that up.

But what I do know is they didn't lose IQ just by entering the Cleveland City limits.

That is where reputation comes in. It reminds me of High School.

I wonder if the other 31 GMs just don't like Heckert and even subconsciously want to dick him around and not deal with him at all...so they shun him or exclude him.

IIRC we tried to get Morgan/Garcon in FA but were rebuffed.

They need to go 9-7 or better in order to have GMs willing to deal with them and FAs willing to come here.

This whole situation post-99 reminds me of the '80-95 Bucs--they were bad for 16 seasons--we've been bad for 14...23 if you count Bud and Bill from '90 to '95.

Nobody had Mitchell Schwartz as a 6th round pick.  Thing is, if we had taken Bobbie Massie at 37 and Joe Adams at 67 folks would be high-fiving themselves for getting great value picks; yet both of those guys wound up going in the 4th round.  Lots of people hoped that Cordy Glenn would "fall" to us at 22.  He went 41.  Others wanted Lamar Miller at 37.  He went at 97.

I'm not saying everything they do is right (it usually isn't - for all teams, by the way); but fan and media "rankings" are almost always crap after the first 5-10 guys.

Gary,
But what I do know is they didn't lose IQ just by entering the Cleveland City limits.

RR,

But what did they lose when they left their arena of sucess and came to Cleveland?  Could it be the guiding hand of those who knew how to suceed, making them sucessful and keeping them from failing?
