Re: Browns fill a hole of they're own creation

You forgot that they also gave up the #4 overall pick. 4 picks to solve the void left by letting Hillis walk.

And the 4th they got cost them 19 slots in the 3rd, and that was a completely unrelated deal to the TR trade, so mentioning it is just weak.

And got the 4th back anyway...............

Re: Browns fill a hole of they're own creation

They swapped the #4 for the #3, they 'gave up' the 4th, 5th and 7th Rounders.

They could do that due to the Trade Down last year from #6, the Julio move.

Wasn't the whole point of that trade so we had extra picks so we could make moves this draft?  Now, we make a move this draft and people go ape.  We still finished with what, 11 picks?  There are 7 Rounds.  How many picks do we need?  We started with 13, we picked with 11, we ensured that we got our player.

Could Minnesota have played us, betting we wanted Trent?  Absolutely.  Could some one have really wanted to jump to #3 for anyone, including Trent?  Absolutely.  Had we sat pat and some one jumped to #3 and grabbed Trent, even it we took Kalil or Blackmon or Claiborne at #4... and it was leaked that Trent was our Target at #4, HOW MANY OF US WOULD HAVE BITCHED THAT THE BROWNS SCREWED UP AND LET SOME OTHER FO OUT PLAY US... AGAIN?

Instead they used the extra resources they acquired (in a Draft where they grabbed the DT and DE that put our Defense into the Top 10 last season) from the last Draft to make damn sure they got the RB they wanted in this Draft.  Then they made sure they improved QB (not my pick, but most do agree they did improve QB with Weeden over McCoy) by using the #22 instead of allowing one of 3 likely teams to jump over the #37 to take him.  And still people cry about it.  Then they land the RT.

Sure, they went DT with the next pick, one they dropped 20 spots to take picking up another pick.  Guess what, they got a guy in the 6th round that people thought they should have picked here, if they just HAD to go DL.  I call that a Win/Win.  I'd venture that improve the DL Rotation would actually benefit the defense better than upgrading one starter elsewhere.  See how bad we got with Rubin or Taylor off the field?  Horrible.  Have to shore that up.  We just did.

We didn't let teams jump us for who we wanted by using extra picks from last years deal.  We dropped and got a quality player at a position of need while picking up an extra pick that filled depth at a position of need.  Overall the strategy here went very well.

And had we stood pat and got jumped for Trent, then went RT or WR at #22 and got jumped for Weeden, this whole Forum would be in rage.

Sure, the ATL trade gave us some peices, and the significant one was #22 which went for Weeeden. But we dumped Hillis, which made us have to use #4, a 4th, 6th and 7th to fill the freaking gaping cavern that that left.

So AFTER the ATL trade, management dumped a sizable talent to create the hole that necessitated the 4 pick dump by Heckert.

The OP wasn't contesting the rest of the draft, so I don't see how the portion of your post below applies.
