Otter,
My knowledge of Grossi's influence comes from a well honed insider on this board. I would really tend to not believe anything else. Grossi did it the first go round and again this year.
Where is the info on the votes not being there to begin with?....and how can that even be possible? Nobody knows the votes until they come in...correct?
Most of the people in that room have known each other for decades. Saying that they don't know how each other will vote is like you sitting down at a Thanksgiving dinner and not knowing which sides of a family argument your relatives are each going to take.
The 'speeches' tend to not have much, if any, impact. The nominee has to get 80% of the vote. With 46 people on the selection committe that means you only need 9 people to not vote for someone.
Look over this list and you probably won't have to look too hard to find 9 guys who weren't exactly fans of Modell's moves:
http://www.profootballhof.com/...ionprocess.aspxHere's an article predating the vote that explains why he didn't thin the owners would get in.

Essentially it boils down to the knowledge that there are at least a few guys in the room who'd rather cover badmitton than vote for a owner and plenty of others who just flat out never liked Modell and never felt he was anything more than an opportunistic businessman.
Now of course there's always the possibility that someone is convinced, via horse trading or God forbid an actual fact, but again the people in that room for the most part have been doing this way too long to be surprised.
