Balt beat a finesse defense in the AFC with passing.

Can they beat a rugged NFC team molded in the Giants/Cowboys/Skins? (Ironically, said team is the 49ers, traditionally NOT known for being a rugged NFC Beast powerhouse).

Balt's O reminds me of a Marchibroda/Moore/Polian Bills team--

Kelly-Flacco

Thurminator-Rice
McKeller/Metzelaars-Pitta/Dickson
Reed-Smith
Lofton-Boldin (strong vet on 2nd team)

Beebe-Jones

Rats have McKinnie at LT and Oher at RT, Birk at C; the Bills had Will Wolford, Kent Hull and Howard Ballard, respectively at LT, C and RT. Very good OLs for both teams.

Defensively, they are a hybrid, so not a 3-4 like the Bills ran, but fast and aggressive. They had Mark Kelso and Shane Conlan and Bennett; the Rats have Ed Reed and Ray Lewis and Suggs.

49ers D is on another level vs. NE, but their O isn't as good. Gore, meet Lewis.

They beat? Many saw it as the Pats beat themselves with drops and sloppy play. I watched the game with a bunch rooting for the Ravens. I wanted a double digit Pats win and collapse of the Ravens. By half time I was sure the Pats were going to lose. They were that bad. Many 3 rd and 2 were not converted The only good play in the first half was the Ravens drive. Ravens won fair and square, but the Pats offense stunk.

S F favored 4.5 to 5.

Well the offense stunk due to the defense of the Ravens.  Drops and sloppy play was not the reason they got BEAT.

Where is that Ravens troll anyways?  The one that's always showing up here, making up dumb excuses for Spygate and their patsy schedule?
cool

THE Ravens beat the Pats at their own game. The pats won the SB  by beating on and up and everywhich way on the Rams. Later the Pats did the same to the Colts, eliminating them and going on to another SB. Last Sunday the Ravens beat up the Pats receivers. The refs threw the book away and let them play.Without Gronk and another tough guy they were doomed.

That is the way I saw the game and am confident it is a correct view having listened to Blt radio on the way home today and further, I listened to Eric Mangini on Mike and Mike say the Pats were unfairly  treated by the refs, but the refs called it the same for both sides.  5 yard chuck???hold??? what?? not being called today. (nice that Eric agrees with me)biggrin

So Lumpy you are spot on. It was the rough defense that won the game. No complaints from me and thee should be none from Pats fans. They got what they gave out in prior games. This time they were left short in the muscle department and when their tough guy DB went down, Anquan Boldin had his way out muscleing the smaller less physical patriot DBs.

Now San Fran is in trouble. they have no pass rush. Flacco will pick them apart. The ravens WRs can play hard ball, can Smith and Jones play with the big boys? Doubt it, if the refs let the game be played as the ravens/pats game.

Lumpy,

Listened to Shaughnesy on MIke Francesa. There to pump the book on Francona, but started on the game. One of Dan's points was the Pats have six lay up games every year...jets, dolphins, bills. Given a bye they get a weak sister. Then they play a tough team and is it close game or at least one in which the match-ups don't favor them. The ravens play in the AFCN and are accustomed to a tougher brand of ball.

rr  IMO, most defenses play at 90% during the season. In the playoffs they bring their best. I could be wrong, but it allows me to think a stout defense in needed in the playoffs and teams that first time meet a tough defense are at a disadvantage. The old iron sharpens iron..  While the Pats are the tough guys in the AFCE, it is the AFCE.

aside... I do think I will like our new DC.  Bring it...

A good defense can usually beat a good offense...but first you have to be GOOD.
