Clarification needed: What is building down the pipe?

Clarification needed: What is building down the pipe?

1) What exactly does that mean? Is that just another phrase from building the DL outward, then LBs, then DBs? (A sequence?)

2) Another funny Lombardi quirk is a black box he had in the '80s and '90s. I'd love to see what he was talking about. You'll see more Belichick-era Browns references in the PD, as the writers at least have something to go back on with Lombardi. I believe it is a forgotten time in the team's history, and people easily forget the '94 team and how good it was. If we get to the Super Bowl that year, it would be the #1 offense vs the #1 defense...would have been epic.

3) This whole Lombardi/Banner thing is almost like a true satire, like The Onion does sports.

Not sure, but I'd guess building "down the pipe" refers to the Belichick, Mangini, etc., philosophy of building down the middle (center, DT, safety).  I think Paul Brown shared this view for the most part, as well.  He did draft a center as the first overall pick for his expansion Cincinnati Bengals, after all.

It may be true that the sum is greater than the parts, as Aristotle said. Or it may be true that the sum is less than the parts, as is often seen in the football world. Or it may be true that the sum will equal the parts, for whatever that means regarding Haslam and the Browns.

Many say they want to "build" something. Actions and results will reveal the sum or lack thereof.

"Building down the pipe" can have several meanings, of course. Worst case, it may be a PR line that says "One of these days- down the pipeline- we'll be building up the middle- or down the pipe- by focusing on key players who make up the sum of our pipe. Yep, one of these days we'll do that. BTW- Give me your money before you go away and drift down the sewer pipe".

That's a cynical view.

I get a mixed message- mostly a bad message- from what I've seen with Haslam. At least we have that so far. Unlike the unmixed message that the Lerners left behind them. But the future lies before us.

I agree with wags and think it means straight down the middle.

A term used in football and baseball.

Re: Clarification needed: What is building down the pipe?

Building down the pipe is building strength down the middle.

The middle of the defense is the NT or DTs, with the ILBs, MLB and then the Ss.  The strength down the middle is key.

The idea of the defensive line collapses the center of the pocket, so the QB cannot step up.

The ILB/MLB, with the DTs/NT stop the running game up the middle.

The safeties are the last line of the defense.  Again, if the safety moves up in the box, again they stop the running play.  A strong set of safeties prevent long offensive plays.

Again, other members might have their descriptions.  If the Browns move to the 34 or a hybrid type defense, they need a top quality free safety.

Now we know the second corner is required and some believe two additional CBs are needed.

The pass rushing OLB, such as Dion Jordan.

Lets see what they do in free agency and the draft.

Wise/wizened coaches in team sports build "from the middle out"; in baseball its pitching, catching, short second, center field; in football "nose", center, guards, QB, MLB, S, RB...basketball, soccer, hockey, water polo, WHATEVER!

Hey diddle diddle...straight DOWN THE MIDDLE!

Of course, being very strong down the middle means that the offense or the defense you are facing can't take the shortest, quickest route from point a to point b (STRAIGHT DOWN THE MIDDLE)...they have to attack your "flanks"...which means they are "slanting" or not "squared up"; a good thing if you ARE "square!"

It's synonymous with terms like "Sh1t through a goose".  It does refer to our defense, but it just indicates how porous the front of the defense has been.  It's getting better in the last year or so, so it's time to dismantle it and jumble it all up.

BTW... You're welcome.

I think it means they're going to flush Heckert's players down the pipe and start from scratch.

Not really.

Well, just a couple of them. Nobody important. Dawson, Cribbs, guys like that.

I think they want another rebuild and see this as a plaything.

Randy failed, but not for lack of trying. Gary was probably right about Randy.
