Photos Worth 1000 Words
I've always loved a good photo especially those that are able to take you to another place make you think, or spark your curiosity to learn something new. In this thread we post amazing pictures that we have seen. If you can please try to give some description along with the photo and try to keep out the photo shops. Amazing color photo of African troops during World War 1. Yep I said World War 1, there are actually quiet a few color photos from the early 1900s and most of them look Amazing. ![3352909921 515aea693a o 100+ Funny Photos Taken At Unusual Angle [Humor]](http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1057/3352909921_515aea693a_o.jpg) Man using the sun to light his cig. Cool park in Paris. and what it looks like when you are not standing in exactly the right spot. This is not a painting or photo shop. Its a picture from Nambia. The background is actually a sand dune and the white patches are grass. The other worldly lighting is due to the picture being taken right at dawn.

Freighter sailing toward Hurricane Isabel. Not verified ( but probably terrified...). No explanation needed. If this doesn't get ctyler excited about the Doghouse here then nothing will. eta: I also have some awesome pictures of Lake Erie that I may decide to share because I know how stainless likes them.

Body of climber Tsewang Paljor nicknamed "green boots." He died in a storm during his decent from Everest northern ridge. One of the craziest things about Everest is that once Climbers are in the dead zone there is literally no going back if they die up there. the peak of Everest is littered with the bodies of climbers who didn't make it, and many of them lie right along popular climbing roots and have become strange landmarks for climbers passing them. I won't post any of the more graphic pictures here but it is a very interesting subject to look into. Its almost like a morbid museum with many of the climbers being from different eras. If you are interested in the subject of Everest and the danger involved in climbing it I'd recommend reading Into Thin Air.

This is is on the Island of St. Maarten. The airport has a short runway that ends just 40 feet from the beach. Large planes have just enough room to land. They have to come in low, directly over the beach. Yikes.

This looks like a scene from a surrealist movie. However it is a photo taken at Salar de Uyuni the largest salt flat in the world. It often floods leaving a shallow layer of water, and a pretty bitching visual effect.

"Firefighters rescue a family from a car dangling over a bridge after a fiery crash, Jan. 12, on Highway 101 near Buellton, Calif. The accident claimed the life of a truck driver.
A team of Navy Seabees happened to be passing by the scene, and the fire crew used a Seabees heavy forklift to stabilize the dangling car. A mother and her two daughters were taken to the hospital."

A miracle that a head-on collison was avoided with the oncoming truck when the car driver tried to pass another truck. That was looking instant death in the eye.
And in the sand dune pic, how did the cyclist get traction?

Omnibus wrote: And in the sand dune pic, how did the cyclist get traction? The sand in the desert can be surprisingly compact, also I'd bet the guy has some pretty decent tread on his tires. Speaking of moose, and car wreaks. Drive around in Alaska for a while and you will almost be grateful for having to just dodge deer in Ohio.

This January 23, 2012 image provided by NASA, captured by the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), shows an M9-class solar flare erupting on the Sun's northeastern hemisphere at 03:49 UT, just 4 days after a previous strong CME that sparked aurora around the world on the 22nd. A very fast coronal mass ejection (CME) traveling four million miles per hour (6.4 million kilometers per hour, is headed towards the Earth. A rush of radiation in the form of solar protons already has begun bombarding the Earth and is likely to continue through Wednesday. The radiation storm is the largest of its kind since 2005 but still ranks only a three on the scale of one to five, enough to be considered "strong" but not "severe. FP PHOTO/HANDOUT/ NASA/SDO
