Washburn game thoughts

Washburn game thoughts

I can't be the only person to have watched it.

Huge fan of Cousins, Hield, Hornbeak and M'Baye. Really nice influx of talent. The three guards can all shoot the three, all four of them play defense and M'Baye is smooth with great length. Hield is my personal favorite. That kid is extremely high energy. We should see a lot less of Neal, Grooms and Clark this year I hope. They were a combined 3-14 and marred what was a good shooting night by the rest of the team. Osby, Pledger, the four newcomers and Fitzgerald actually look like the makings of a decent basketball team. Kruger has these guys buying into his system, playing hard on defense and hitting the boards. Hield is an especially aggressive rebounder for a guard and M'Baye is a good rebounder. Not much to say offensively other than they shot the three extremely well mainly because of the new guards and Pledger. Really nothing inside all night, even Osby was settling for jumpers. Should be a fun team to watch as they continue to gel and qualifying for the NIT should be well within their ability.

Nah, I watched it too but I rarely post in the basketball section here. It's pretty dead... I usually post on ouhoops.com.

Re: Washburn game thoughts

i saw the replay last night

i had a couple thoughts:
1. some good looking new guys: Hield and MBaye especially
2. I sure wish we had more post presence, we're going to get worked over by the KU and UT teams which always seem to have a few 6'10" and up players... I don't think we have anybody over 6'8" that plays regularly.
3.  I hope we still see alot of Grooms. He was solid in assist/to ratio last year and I didn't see much from the frosh to make me think they will be better any time soon.  In fact, it looked to me like the frosh were mostly combo guards who could play point, not true point players...however, it's one game against a low level team so we'll see how that works out.
4.  I was impressed by the defensive intensity of the young players for an early season exo game.

Hornbeak definitely looks like he can handle the point. Cousins looked like a spot up guy and Hield is a combo guy for sure. I am sure Grooms plays since he is a steady hand, I just hate the thought of him taking minutes away from guys who can really score the basketball and who bring so much more athleticism to the team.

I look forward to seeing these new guys play when I get to Oklahoma for the holidays.  I'm also glad they handled UCO with ease last night.  I hope OU never has a close exhibition game with an in-state team.

Soonerb98, you might change your mind about Cousins as the season progresses.  He's not just a combo guard who can play the point.  He's an outstanding on-the-ball defender who brings an ability to score to the game, something Grooms cannot do.  He's still a freshman who makes freshman mistakes sometimes.  But he played a near flawless floor game last night in distributing the ball to his teammates and making good decisions.  I was there.  Wait until you see him in person and you'll know what I mean.

I like Grooms, and I'm glad OU has a PG of his caliber to back Cousins up and give him the benefit of his experience.  But, unless our freshman point guard finds a way to screw up the opportunity to run the offense, he is, and will continue to be, our starting point guard this season.

There is a reason why Coach Kruger started two freshmen in the two exhibition games.  They're better than any back court player on our roster, with the possible exception of Steven Pledger.  The best freshman of the bunch, Buddy Hield, is coming off of the bench right now.  Trust me, Buddy is the real deal! He's the best scorer on the team, regardless of class.  LK definitely knew what he was doing when he signed Hield, Hornbeak and Cousins.

I haven't seen any of the UCO game yet

I hope ada and eddy are right about the young guards, I've enjoyed reading the analysis.  I agree the new guys are a bigger scoring threat than Grooms. However, I also like the idea of having a steady PG who's been there and done that against B12 competition.  It will be interesting to see how the distribution of starts and playing time works out over the course of the season.  The great thing is, we have an excellent coach so I feel confident it will be managed well.  I hope we can recruit and develop some depth and size in the frontcourt to go with these guys over the next few years.
