Jerry Montgomery is in his second year as Michigan's defensive line coach. A former defensive tackle at the University of Iowa (1998-2001) HINT HIINT, he returns to the Big Ten after serving the previous four years as the defensive line coach at the University of Wyoming (2009-10) and Northern Iowa (2007-08).
In 2011, Montgomery's line was part of a Wolverines defense that allowed only 17.4 points per game, which ranked second in the Big Ten and sixth in the FBS, and 131.7 rushing yards per game, third-best in the Big Ten, on its way to an 11-2 record and Sugar Bowl victory.
From 2007-09, Montgomery helped coach his teams to three straight postseason appearances: Wyoming's victory at the 2009 New Mexico Bowl; and the University of Northern Iowa's Football Championship Subdivision appearances in 2007 (quarterfinals) and 2008 (semifinals).
Montgomery's 2009 Wyoming defensive line featured first-team All-MWC tackle John Fletcher and honorable mention end Mitch Unrein, both of whom signed free-agent contracts after the 2010 NFL Draft. Fletcher concluded his career ranked third in MWC history and fifth in Wyoming history with 24 career sacks. Unrein was the 2009 New Mexico Bowl Defensive MVP.
At Northern Iowa, Montgomery was part of the Panthers' 2008 Missouri Valley Football Conference championship team that went 12-3 overall and 7-1 in-conference, while reaching an FCS national ranking as high as No. 4. The 2008 UNI defense ranked 10th nationally among all FCS teams in scoring defense, allowing 17.7 points per game.
In 2007, UNI was 12-1, entered the playoffs as the No. 1 seed and advanced to the quarterfinals. Northern Iowa concluded the year ranked in the top five in both national polls and ranked among the top 10 in rushing defense (No. 6), scoring defense (No. 7) and total defense (No. 10).
The 1997 Nevada State Player of the Year out of high school, Montgomery was a four-year starter at Iowa. The Hawkeyes won the 2001 Alamo Bowl his senior season. Montgomery concluded his college career in the Hula Bowl All-Star Game and went on to participate in the 2002 New Orleans Saints' camp. As a student assistant with Iowa in 2002, the Hawkeyes posted an 11-2 record and played in the 2003 Orange Bowl. Montgomery played in the Arena Football League with the Chicago Rush, Colorado Crush and Las Vegas Gladiators from 2003-05.
Montgomery graduated from Iowa with a bachelor's degree in African American Studies in 2002. He and his wife, Natalie, have three sons, Jayden, Tevyn and Jace, and one daughter, Talayla.
