U rank em ur Top 10 RBs in OU history

U rank em ur Top 10 RBs in OU history

Please give us your OU top 10 based on this criteria--What impact the back had on the the program while he was here, talent, WOW! factor, dependability, reliability, pre OU and post OU success, Big time performances--I can only speak for the backs I saw play and I am 45 so...

Here's my list...

1) Billy Sims- It's difficult to imagine a more dynamic back, he had it all, shouldve been a 2x Heisman winner
2) AD - What can you say? Incredible talent, before, during, after his OU years, he is incredible.
3) Lil Joe- Just go watch his highlights-He made plays that couldnt be made-
4) Greg Pruitt- He was fast, and he was a playmaker-
5) Demarco Murray- Talented, fast, great-
6) Lil Q- Big gamer, lil guy--
7) Mike Gaddis- Ballyhooed HS recruit battled through injuries to out duel Barry Sanders
8) Demond Parker- Some tremendous games on bad teams
9) Marcus Dupree- Had some great games-what could have been-
10) James Allen- Super recruit had flashes of brilliance--

My apologies to Steve Owens, Billy Vessels, Clendon Thomas, so many other Sooner greats I never saw play...

I’m going to pick on your list.  While the NFL draft is not always a good indicator of a college career it does have some relevance.  Here’s some you missed.

Beside the two you mentioned you left off there are three first round picks not on your list:

Peacock (you can pitch him because played more than one position)

Overstreet (top 10)

Sewell (probably not top 10, but should get votes)

Beside these you left off (NFL draft pick) Wylie (4), Ivory (2), King (3), Moore (3) and Fazande (2).  Of these at least Ivory and King deserve some top 10 votes.  Besides Vessels there are several 1950s era players that should be considered in any top 10 discussion.

You left off a probable top 5 in Joe Don Looney.

Griffin, Gaddis, Parker and Allen are not top 10.

1.  Peterson
2.  Sims
3.  Dupree
4.  Washington
5.  Pruit
6.  Looney
7.  Owens
8.  Overstreet
9.  Vessels
10. Murray

I could easily replace Murray with King or Sewell, but he's on my list because of the scoring record.  Horace Ivory was a hell of a player too.  I aways liked Roy Bell.

No one else mentioned McDonald, but he was an All American, winner of the Maxwell and Sporting News Player of the Year Awards and a member of the Football Hall of Fame. McDonald never played in a losing game while at OU (31-0). He was a WR in the NFL, but primarily a RB at OU.

I didn't include either Dupree or Looney. Can't see how an all time top 10 list should include a player who quit the team early in his second year, or one who was literally voted off the team by his teammates in his second year. Potential is, by definition, what someone has not yet accomplished. Both players had tremendous potential, but only minimal accomplishments. Could they have been among the all time greats at OU? Probably, but no one knows for sure.

Statisticaly...at OU....IT is Q! Best receiver ever. Refused to go back in against Wash. St. in order to break season rushing record. Score the only TD in the NC game against Fla. St. Burned his redshirt when the starter went down in 1999. I think most would give the crown to AD. Demond Parker anyone. He should have came back. Might have won the Heisman.

I am going to argue with you for Billy Sims, despite playing hardly any at all his freshman year and not much his sophomore year and he played in an offense that featured 3 other backs Billy rushed for 4,023 yards on 578 carries for a career and a 7.0 average per attempt.AD was always the featured back when he played and didn't share many carries at all when he was healthy.AD rushed for 4,045 yards on 747 carries and a 5.4 average per attempt.

Billy's stats at OU

AD's stats

Rushing & Receiving

Both were very dynamic backs and we were lucky to have had both of them play at OU,but to say AD and then everybody else is not realistic in my opinion.Billy's career got cut short in the NFL,as they didn't have the medical technology that they do today, and Billy played on some really horrific Lions teams in the early 80s.Despite that he still made it to the Pro Bowl 3 straight years his first three seasons.Had Billy had the chance to play a full career like the Walter Paytons,Emmit Smiths and Barry Sanders of the world I have no doubt Billy would have been right up there among the elite.

RE: U rank em ur Top 10 RBs in OU history

Since this is opinion anything is valid, but I think one should explain a little -

I think the world of Q for what he did at OU. I thought Overstreet was very good. I see the point about Looney, but he was an AA and Q and Overstreet were not.

So, I can leave off Looney for his attitude and keep Q in the top ten, but Clendon Thomas was also an AA and probably would have been more than once, but he played with Tommie McDonald.

And going on absolute accomplishments (including, but not limited to stats) at OU and not PRO career or what ifs -

Billy Sims (more yards and better Y/attempt)
Adrian Peterson (just wonder if he had no injuries and a better QB, but that is if...)
Joe Washington
Tommy McDonald
Billy Vessels
Greg Pruitt
Clendon Thomas
Steve Owens
Demarco Murray
Quintin Griffin

Not top 10  but I wanna give an honorable mention to Demond Parker.  Grossly underrated because he played on bad teams.

Re: U rank em ur Top 10 RBs in OU history

The RBs I saw play. I did not see Vessels or Clendon Thomas, but they have historical significance and legacy as OU greats. So, the top 10 I SAW PLAY:
1. Dupree
2. Sims
3. Peterson
4. Washington
5. Pruitt
6. Owens
7. McDonald
8. Overstreet
9. Ivory
10. Gaddis

But, when you talk a out the 10 greatest at OU, you have a formidable task. I don't know any other program that has this history!! Maybe, maybe Southern Cal....maybe!!
I can tell you this, Looney was unbelievable at points in his career as was Peacock (Elvis Peacock-he should get in just on his name), King, Brewer, Parker, Wylie,....shoot, even Earl Johnson before he broke his knee cap and Demarco Murray before he broke his knee cap and ruptured his patella tendon could have been a top 5! See, just too many great ones!
I'll go with my 10!
