Re: Barry Switzer Movie "Bootleggers Boy".
Why would any OU fan want this movie to come out? Showing all the recruiting violations, guns in the dorm, so on and so on. A program that was out of control as much as it was good.

Mississippi State fan here, always have been a sooner fan also. I have read the book and I don't think Barry Switzer ever bought a player. One of the best college coaches ever. I played for Jackie Sherill and those 2 are alot alike. TahlequahBoomer wrote: Why would any OU fan want this movie to come out? Some how this may attract some recruits. All kids these days are drawn to that badboy image. There is a strange allure to that miami thug u lifestyle. . --------------------------------------------- --- TahlequahBoomer wrote:

Re: Barry Switzer Movie "Bootleggers Boy".
As long as the story is told truthfully, I will have no problem with it. Barry was no saint, we all know that.
As far as what went down at the end, he made the mistake of looking at talent solely and disregarding any and all character flaws. But what people don't remember is that everybody else was doing the same thing. Rapes happened on numerous campuses, lots of athletic parking lots looked like night club parking lots that catered to the rich and famous. Drugs were everywhere, not just at OU. Lawrence Phillips happened, NU football was out of control back then as well.
But the main issues that singled out OU, is that it went too far at OU. QB, ambassador of the program, arrested for drugs. If CT was a cornerback, the national media would've barely noticed. A QB though, that is different.
The Jerry Parks shooting was unheard of, but people forget that even squeaky clean Notre Dame had offered Jerry Parks. Imagine that? Parks shooting people under the statue of Touchdown Jesus? On a side note, whatever happened to Jerry Parks? Just curious.
The rumored Buster Rhymes firing a weapon at OU incident. During the Wilkinson era, I read a book about Joe Don Looney where he kept a loaded firearm in the dorms and threatened people with it from time to time. Bud never took heat for this incident because it never got out until years later. This sort of thing happens once in awhile, not sure how Barry could've known it would happen and prevented it.
Bottom line: This is going to be a great movie. It's got a little bit of everything, and I hope the movie at least lets the uninformed viewers know that this craziness was all over, not just at OU.

If he were our coach today we wouldn't be worried about when were going to get to play for another NC, we'd be getting prepared. Best of luck to you cat's at Mississippi State!

A program that was out of control as much as it was good. That is not going to be the focus of the film. The film will focus 95% on Switzer's upbringing in Arkansas, OU football will be a minor part of the film.

Re: Barry Switzer Movie "Bootleggers Boy".
Three ways to tell this story....
Barry's side
Public perceptions side
And what actually happened
Betting we get a mixture of all 3
active duty USAF pilot 02 OU alum # of GYOKIE RockONs: 10

The OU part has got to be more because it's more interesting than just a poor kid growing up in the backwoods.

If that's all you know about the Switzer era,you should probably read the book.If you already have and you still define him on his last couple of years, then I don't know what else I can tell you.

Re: Barry Switzer Movie "Bootleggers Boy".
Barry is bold but openly honest in his way. That is a bit refreshing considering his past very high profile coaching positions. He admits his failings with honesty and humility. He doesn't make excuses and that is admirable. He seems to own his flaws and be contrite while exposing others of his peers as being flawed in their own personal power and egos.
None can deny his openess as relates to his personal experiences with the brokers of political power over and under him. Lots of practical insight from his own perspective as he negotiated his public and personal life. He is informative, at the least when it comes to his public as well as personal interactions. One on one he always has demonstrated approachability with most anyone he meets. That alone is highly unique, on his own personal account. There aren't many like him and in that regard he remains personaly unique for such a well known persona. I give him credit for his openess and honesty. That takes bravery and a admirable lack of personal public fear of the consequences on his part. He just says it as it is from his dealings vs. political correctness. Who do you know that does that even at their personal expence? Few indeed actually do so. He is honest despite the cost to him personaly. That is open bravery, and that at least should be to his credit.

RE: Barry Switzer Movie "Bootleggers Boy".
Everybody was cheating when Switzer was coach. People have Switzer pegged as a bad guy because he was so well revered and personable. Ask Tom Osborne about concealing the gun his player used in a crime in the safe in his office.

Yes uno! And Barry never hid or lied about anything. As he said, he never felt it was necessary to put up a sign in the athletic dorm that read "Players Shall Not Commit Crimes". The main thing that Barry was guilty of is having a kind heart, such as helping a member with the track team with a plane ticket home for the Xmas holiday.
