Nick Jeffreys Preferred Walk-on at OU???

Nick Jeffreys Preferred Walk-on at OU???

Anyone Know??

I saw this on another board:

"Also, OU has offered a preferred walk on spot to Nick Jeffreys 6-4,235,4.9 from Bishop McGuinness HS in OKC. He looks very good for a walk-on offer. Here's his highlight reel and from the looks of it he could be a bigger more athletic Ratarree or a potential Ripkowski like H-Back/FB. A very good looking walk on athlete."

Very strong leg and attended the same kicking camp at Jed Barnett.

Jeffreys chose to sign with the Citadel instead of accepting the walk-on offer. Hard to blame the kid when he can get a free education.

Amazing that the "best LB in the state" went to the Citadel while Carson and Rolan, who he "outperformed at camp," both went FBS. No way the faux OU fan who propoated that sorry was full of it.

The Citadel is a good school, and their alums have a very strong network where they help each other after graduation.  Granted quite a few of them go on to military careers, or something associated with it, but not all.

You could do a lot worse than the Citadel.

OU is an average educational institution at best despite what boren advertises. Fantastic choice by this young man.

Keep telling yourself that...maybe you'll start to believe it eventually.

Not real quick but looked like he has decent hands. Defensively, he's a little slow for LB.

So you think shelling out a ton of cash for school at an average academic institution just for a chance to be on the team is better than getting a free ride and probably PT at The Citadel?

I have a few Citadel friends who are alums.  You are right they have a strong network after graduation.

One, tuition is still cheap at OU compared to the rest of the nation. If he's going to McGuinness I doubt he'll have too much trouble affording it.

Two, OU is a bit better than average. If you look at US News & World Report rankings, OU is ranked #101, while you can't even find The Citadel until you select REGIONAL rankings. Even Argosy and Capella Universities are listed in the top 300.

Finally, if it's about networking...where do you think you're going to get the best hook-ups, at a nationally known university like Oklahoma with an annual enrollment just under 30,000, with a powerhouse football program and big money, jock-sniffing boosters ready to hand out jobs to even walk-on athletes after graduation...or a regional university with an enrollment of 2,500 that few people know or care where it's located, or whether they even have a football program?

So, yes...I'd say that the cost of local tuition and the opportunities he could get walking on at OU just may be more valuable than free tuition to a place that SEC schools schedule regularly to get a bye week without actually taking the week off.

My goal in life is to be half as good a person as my dog already thinks I am.

I have noticed a bunch of new recruits that are somewhat negative in their postings. Seem to have a chip on their shoulder.

HTF did you decide on your emoticon? A wet "rat" of a dog in a bathtub? Were you giving your dog a bath and then decided a pic would make for a great emoticon? Or were you taking a bath with your dog? Either way, it's pure pet-pornography.

"Jock-sniffing boosters?" Are you kidding me? I doubt Nick Jeffreys is going to need a handout from a "jock-sniffing booster" or anyone for that matter. Dude is a winner.

I would not be dissing The Citadel's track record against SEC schools given OU's own embarrassing performances against the SEC.

Looks like Jeffreys will be spending the next 4 years living by the ocean in historic Charleston, SC, playing football and getting a free education in 70 degree temperatures.

He'll graduate with zero debt, money in the bank, a great life experience in another part of the country, and the opportunity to actually be on the field against SEC teams.

Contrast that to walking-on at OU where he will be out of pocket, possibly in debt, living down the road in same ole Norman, OK, getting his body beat up on the practice squad with very little hope of playing on game day.  If Stoops & Co are willing to lie to Millard about playing time, then I doubt very seriously they are going to shoot straight with walk-ons about playing time.

Citadel sounds like a sweet gig.

I agree with you that OU is a fine institution, and walking on and playing football at OU (assuming one can afford to do so) is a special thing that most of us can only dream of.

But The Citadel is a fine school as well, and like I stated upthread, being a Citadel alum can open up a lot of doors later in life.  Also, I'm not sure what your background is, or where you have lived your entire life, but The Citadel is well known and well respected throughout the entire world, not just in SC.  Imagine that, a school that accomplishes fame without playing elite football?

If I was in this same situation, it would be a very tough decision.  I don't think you can go wrong either way, OU (walk on) or The Citadel (full ride).

Whisky,

Nice to see some objectivity among the Sooner family.

Jeffreys had 2 great opportunities: An invited Walk-on opportunity at OU or a scholarship opportunity at Citadel.
