Re: American soldier held by Taliban for years is released

An account from someone who was on ground at the time if true it shows why so many were not happy about him coming back

"Forwarded from Jeff Howard. "We were at OP Mest, Paktika Province, Afghanistan. It was a small outpost where B Co 1-501st INF (Airbone) ran operations out of, just an Infantry platoon and ANA counterparts there. The place was an Afghan graveyard. Bergdahl had been acting a little strange, telling people he wanted to "walk the earth" and kept a little journal talking about how he was meant for better things. No one thought anything about it. He was a little “out there”. Next morning he's gone. We search everywhere, and can't find him. He left his weapon, his kit, and other sensitive items. He only took some water, a compass and a knife. We find some afghan kids shortly after who saw an american walking north asking about where the taliban are. We get hits on our voice intercepter that Taliban has him, and we were close. We come to realize the kid deserted his post, snuck out of camp and sought out Taliban… to join them. We were in a defensive position at OP Mest, where your focus is to keep people out. He knew where the blind spots were to slip out and that's what he did. It was supposed to be a 4-day mission but turned into several months of active searching. Everyone was spun up to find this guy. News outlets all over the country were putting out false information. It was hard to see, especially when we knew the truth about what happened and we lost good men trying to find him. PFC Matthew Michael Martinek, Staff Sgt. Kurt Robert Curtiss, SSG Clayton Bowen, PFC Morris Walker, SSG Michael Murphrey, 2LT Darryn Andrews, were all KIA from our unit who died looking for Bergdahl. Many others from various units were wounded or killed while actively looking for Bergdahl. Fighting Increased. IEDs and enemy ambushes increased. The Taliban knew that we were looking for him in high numbers and our movements were predictable. Because of Bergdahl, more men were out in danger, and more attacks on friendly camps and positions were conducted while we were out looking for him. His actions impacted the region more than anyone wants to admit. There is also no way to know what he told the Taliban: Our movements, locations, tactics, weak points on vehicles and other things for the enemy to exploit are just a few possibilities. The Government knows full well that he deserted. It looks bad and is a good propaganda piece for the Taliban. They refuse to acknowledge it. Hell they even promoted him to Sergeant which makes me sick. I feel for his family who only want their son/brother back. They don’t know the truth, or refuse to acknowledge it as well. What he did affected his family and his whole town back home, who don’t know the truth. Either way what matters is that good men died because of him. He has been lying on all those Taliban videos about everything since his “capture”. If he ever returns, he should be tried under the UCMJ for being a deserter and judged for what he did. Bergdahl is not a hero, he is not a soldier or an Infantryman. He failed his brothers. Now, sons and daughters are growing up without their fathers who died for him and he will have to face that truth someday.""

Do you think it's helpful to the troops still in harm's way that Obama has sent a clear message to terrorists that kidnapping U.S. troops will pay off, and the going rate is a 5-for-1 swap?
Israel does it all the time

Are the Taliban really terrorists? They gave bin Laden safe haven for sure,  but they did not attact us, we invaded their country. Using that logic, the American Revolutionary War soldiers were terrorists. Remember Bush had the Taliban visit the US in 2000.

I'm trying to help you to understand that being in position to be kidnapped by the Taliban was never a winning proposition.

That's just what this crap was.............A PR MOVE.

Well, let's see, if there are say 100 evil bastards still at GITMO, that means the Taliban just have to capture about 20 Americans, to empty the jail....

This isn't about some poor soldier......this is about, trying to plug the hole in the sinking ship.......YET ANOTHER POLITICAL MOVE...

Pinocchio just put increased risk on any American within range of the Taliban...

Obama didn't KNOW he was breaking U.S. law.....no one every told him, he was not briefed on this, he heard about it on a news broadcast, and rush-ordered the teleprompters to be in place, when some AWOL soldier exited the plane.   The Taliban are laughing in Afghanistan, thinking, "MAN, WHY THE HELL DIDN'T WE THINK OF THIS BEFORE?"

So, one Obozo political move, at Benghazi, leaves 4 Americans murdered...and no response or help given, because to do so, would indicate it was a terrorist attack=bad press, just pre election...

So now, yet another Obozo political move, to stop the hemorrhaging, in the press.....and he gives away 5 of the most evil bastards on earth, FOR A SOLDIER WHO DESERTED HIS POST TO SEE THE TALIBAN....

That went out the window as soon as Reagan sold 1,500 missiles to Iran for five American hostages.

There are about a half-dozen legitimate reasons this was a bad move, but the concept that negotiating with the Taliban somehow puts the US troops in more danger? I don't find the argument compelling.

If it came out in the news that Obama turned this deal down,  would the GOP have supported him, or attacked him for not getting this soldier back? I think we all know the answer.

We sure do, Zombie. Where was all this concern over terrorist hostage-taking when Reagan sent 1,500 missiles to Iran for five American hostages?

Geez, even the release of a guy who was a POW for close to 5 years has the cons questioning said POWs patriotism.

I rest my case with these azzclowns..........rolleyes

There are numerous stories that this guy went UA and caused some of our guys to get killed.

IF those stories are partially true, I would have left him.

I've heard about the "wanting to walk the earth" account about him several times.  If true, trading five Taliban leaders for his dumb ass was a mistake.

Re: American soldier held by Taliban for years is released

As Twitchy has reported, President Obama ordered the release of five Gitmo detainees to secure the return of Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl from his Taliban captors in Afghanistan.

Recently, a tweet was published from the account of Bowe Bergdahl’s father, Robert, which stated a desire to see all Gitmo detainees released:

Wow. This is the father who appeared alongside Obama today. RT @bobbergdahl: I am still working to free all Guantanamo prisoners.—
Christian Ziegler (@ChrisMZiegler) June 01, 2014

I'm going to go out on a limb and say this father is a terrorist sympathizer.  He has since deleted his tweet but once it's out there, it can't be deleted.

First and foremost glad he is recovered.

However the story you are hearing is not accurate. He literally walked off (deserted) his OP in the hopes of finding the Taliban and being accepted. Obviously the Haqqani network didn't. He wasn't captured during a battle, he literally walked away. This isn't classified, this is all open source. With that said I was in Afghanistan in 2012. Kid is and was a deserter.

We released five very bad and evil people to recover a deserter. Glad he is recovered just wish it could have happened another way.

Thank God I have done my duty!

I understand his dad was speaking at the WH in Pashtun or Urdu yesterday when he talked.

This stinks to high heaven to me.  Now, maybe there is a logical story to this, but this one could have significant blow back as we learn more.
