Thoughts on the national recruiting season so far....

Some thoughts on the national recruiting race......

-Auburn is continuing it's wicked, wicked way$-Greg Bryant-RB-will be a huge pickup for them tomorrow after his decommit...it's not often they are able to outbid for the top 2 players in Alabama-Liner,Randle-over the Tide either......

-Marcus Baugh might be the best player in California not going to USC.........

-Look for Miami to make a late run on S. Florida talent-Florida and FSU are getting close to their limits and Miami is still only at 10 or so.....

-Reprts of Oregon's recent recruiting prowess have been over estimated this year,IMO....

-scUM's class is highly overrated,IMO-Morris and the OL are top notch, but the scUMers are lacking top end talent at WR/RB/DL

-Who will do the best job of scavenging the carrion of PSU's class-Pitt or WVU?

There's a certain kind of reassuring white rock....and some people do well with that.....

Yeah, Auburn has made some noise with flips, still #2 in Alabama though

-Marcus Baugh might be the best player in California not going to USC.........Must be nice to have all of California to yourself. Super quality class. UCLA or CAL really need to step up for the train to stop rolling

-Look for Miami to make a late run on S. Florida talent-Florida and FSU are getting close to their limits and Miami is still only at 10 or so.....Miami is going to have troubles recruiting as long as the scandal hangs over their head. Lots of "underrated" talent in south Florida, maybe Golden can find it. I think they will never be the Miami of old again though, their facilities just cannot compare and because of their location they cannot improve them.

-Reprts of Oregon's recent recruiting prowess have been over estimated this year,IMO.... That's what the lack of a street agent will do. Tyner is a beast though, and its so lucky to have such a perfect fit for their O so close to home.

-scUM's class is highly overrated,IMO-Morris and the OL are top notch, but the scUMers are lacking top end talent at WR/RB/DL Their overall talent level is very good, though I think a fair share of their recruits are overrated and the class lacks balance. But they will go as Morris goes, if he learns to be consistent they will be good, if he cant they will look rough until they can find a QB and some WRs to throw to. I do not think he will be close to ready as a freshman though.

-Who will do the best job of scavenging the carrion of PSU's class-Pitt or WVU? If they eventually leave I think they spread out, you probably wont see everyone go to one school like OSU last year.

we definitely do not have game breakers at the WR position.  DL will be fine, not OSU quality however.  RB will be good with Smith, and much better if we can pull Green.  Ty Isaac simply wanted to get away from home.  Not sure what your reference to Treadwell is about

Texas A&M has 27 recruits all ready. WOW

SMU has a better class than MSU. C'mon Dantoni.

OSU and UM are going to be in a different class than the rest of the BIG in 2 years.

Hoke offers every Ohio kid early. OSU gets the Ohio players that they absolutely want under Meyer.

Taco Charlton remains the most overrated recruit out there.

While mich may still be in it for Treadwell, it's becoming more and more evident that he's not going there.  Baseball made sure to PM me and let me know that those 2 were locks a few months back.

Kalis, Dymonte, Gedeon, Mccray, Bolden as the top guys that Meyer would have taken....Ferns & Devers in 2014 quite probable also....Sounds like there is enough talent in Ohio to share and Michigan is getting their fair share.

Gedeon and McCray werent top priorities for OSU

Kalis, Dymonte, and Bolden committed during the scandal.
Dymonte is the only player Urban recruited hard.

Gedeon was one of the first offers extended by Meyer. What makes you think he wasn't a top priority?

Agree pretty much:

Class of 2012: D. Thomas committed to Mich early and the "old coaching staff" did not offer.  Meyer wanted him, but looks like he's a Mich lock -  if OSU lands S-Von Bell, then no loss here.
Kalis- Mr. Flipper with a big mouth...get lost
Bolden - Not offered and not needed with the 5 LB'ers we took

Class of 2013: LB'ers not a big need, after taking 5 last year...The LBing commitable offers were J. Smith, Anzalone, and probably the kid from the atlanic coast (South Carolina) who had grade issues.  The Ohio kids = NO LOSS, especially if we land Mitchell MLB and Lewis Leo/Olb

AA-U Fat-Boy got "OHIO"(ha,ha,...) TABLE SCRAPS

Meyer landed "big-time" national recruits >>>>> "the ohio kids"

I don't get the need to bash Hoke.  IMO he's doing a good job with recruiting, is restoring their part of the rivalry, and is making the Big Ten better.  Their defense is MUCH better.  Even today you hear national recruits picking OSU, in part, due to the OSU/Mich rivalry.  The better they are, the better the rivalry is going to be.  Remember the OSU-Mich games where you could hardly breathe?  I remember games where I had to drink a half dozen beers just to survive the game!  I think they're on their way back, and OSU, UM, and the Big Ten will be better for it.  Go blue, go Hoke (just not quite as good as OSU!).winkcoolbiggrin

I think UM offers the Ohio kids he wants right on time-he is just pickier than JT was,IMO.
Hoke needs to prove he can get top notch skill position players from around the country like scUM used to, not just getting the best OL and LBs from the Midwest.

UM is still the favorite for Treadwell and a real possibility to land Green. Smith is already in the fold. These are all kids offered by OSU at some point- not to mention other top schools.

Poggi is a stud and chose UM over Bama and other top programs. Taco is a freak athlete and worth taking a chance on. He has a high ceiling. Morris is rated a top 3-5 QB by every major service and the OL is arguably the best in the country.

RE: Thoughts on the national recruiting season so far....

Bama wanted Poggi as a blocking TE, that's how much of a stud he is. Who else chased him hard, we certainly didn't.

Taco is a good athlete, he's not a freak athlete. Let me know when he does something on an actual football field and I'll admit he was a decent pickup.

You have some really nice players, wouldn't use those 2 to create a point.

Re: Thoughts on the national recruiting season so far....

article from the The Ozone:

Meyer and his new staff—which includes two holdovers from last season in Luke Fickell and Mike Vrabel—decided to wait on offering a handful of in-state kids back in the spring. With a limited number of spots in the class, Meyer wanted to make sure he knew exactly what Ohio Sate was getting.

One of those kids was Trotwood-Madison linebacker Mike McCray, an OSU legacy recruit who ultimately committed to Michigan, of all places, in March. The Buckeyes had wanted to see McCray at camp in the summer.

The same goes for Pickerington Central’s Taco Charlton and Archbishop Alter’s Malik Zaire.

“Kids are getting advised to only speak to those schools with offers,” Meyer said.

“We had that happen this spring. I wanted a kid to come to camp so we could get to know him. He said, ‘I’m not coming unless I’m offered.’”

It sounds cold, but Meyer can’t exactly fault kids for going with the sure thing.

“I can’t blame them,” he said.

“He has a couple birds in the hand, so it forces us to offer. Puts us in a position, what if he takes it?

Re: Thoughts on the national recruiting season so far....

Both schools are putting together classes that are impressive.

For TSUN:

QB
OL
DB
LB
DL

Are all strong positions in this class. Weakness is skill players on Offense. RB and WR
are greatly lacking imo. Not sure that they are going to land any skill players that are going to be real playmakers and game changers. The OL class is excellent (probably the best in CFB) and it will be fun watching them go up against our stellar DL in the years to come. If its true that games are won up front then Hoke is well on his way to putting together a winning team. TSUN improved their Defense with this class which was greatly needed, but it is still probably a class or two away from being amongst the elite D's in the BiG Ten again. It is solid but not yet stellar.

Hoke knows what kind of players best fit in his Offensive and Defensive schemes but TSUN will not be an elite team until they can bring in more playmakers on both sides of the ball. They are losing their only real playmaker on Offense in DRob after this year and it is going to be very hard to find someone who is as dynamic and productive as him. On D they need to land some studs on the DL and continue to build their D on all fronts.

For tOSU:

QB
RB
WR
TE
DL

Are all strong positions in this class. DB is solid but not strong at this point. Weakness is OL and LB. Gardner helped (Munger said he was the best OL at FNL) but we still need to bring in another stud OT. Munger could be a nice addition at Guard if he verbals. Moving Farris and Baldwin to the OL this year will add immediate needed depth. Farris was quite a good OL in H.S. so I like that move. I also like Baldwins potential and love his frame. He's exactly the type of OT Urban likes.

Mitchell would be a nice get at LB. Apparently there were a few players at The Opening who said they would be going to tOSU but have not gone public yet. Hopefully that is the case. Our real strength is in playmakers on Offense at skill positions (QB, RB, WR) as well as TE. Baugh is going to be a beast. We desperately needed playmakers in this class and Urban got five great guys in Barrett, Marshall, Jacobs, Elliot and Baugh. He also brought in elite speed and quickness which is going to pay great dividends in the future.

Of course the DL is one of the best in the nation and matches TSUN OL haul. There is not a team in CFB that would not want Hill, Bosa or Price on their team. And Sprinkle is no slouch. Throw in Shutt, Spence, Washington and Pittman from this years class and there is going to be some epic battles in the trenches with the TSUN.

If it is true that Offense wins games and Defense wins championships then Urban has a number of BiG Ten and hopefully National Championships in the near future.

Re: Thoughts on the national recruiting season so far....

This is actually a pretty interesting article from the kids' perspective.  If they're forced to go to camp, and DON'T get an offer, it really hurts their image and standing.  So, from that standpoint, when they get advice not to go to camp without an offer, it makes sense.

I think what you'll see more and more of in the future is non-committable offers.  Extend an offer, so that the kid can say he has one, but put some qualifications on it, such as camp, or grades, or fall video... whatever.  I just think it's become important for these kids to say they've got certain offers, important for their psyche, important for their ratings, and important for their chances at season ending all star games.
