Freshman Impact Players since Tressel took over

I think we may see a few this coming year. Let's turn back the clock

T. Pryor
Braxton Miller
Malcolm Jenkins
MoC
Chris Gamble?
Ted Ginn
Chris Wells
James Laurinaitis
Dane Sanzenbacher
Michael Brewster

Any others?

Donte Whitner, Ryan Shazier, Cameron Heyward Jon Hankins and John Simon played well as freshmen on defense.
Devin Smith was as effective as any other receiver in 2011.
Laurinaitis played against Michigan his freshman year but finished the season with single-digit tackles.

Rob Sims and Nick Mangold started in the Natty Championship game.

12 receptions doesn't make an "impact" player.

Probably Stepanovich and Douglas were the starters in the NC game while RS and NM played in the game.

JL was primarily a back up as a frosh playing mostly special teams and had very limited stats with only 9 total tackles

Gamble also as a frosh had little impact, caught 3 passes, returned 5 punts and 1 KO and played zero defense

otherwise the list is fine

No Sims and Mangold had been pushing those spots and started an basically played the entire game.  Watch those highlights and you see some key blocks by those two  - particuarly in OTs.

Nate Williams was great filling in for Thaddeus Gibson his fr yr.

Glimpses by others: Gonzo's TD vs UM in 04...Christian Bryant and Jon Hankins showed glimpses as well.

He had 14, I believe.. Tied with Philley and Jake for the most.
My opinion is that if you're a freshman and tie for the most receptions on the team (as well as most yards and ypc?) then you had a decent impact on that team. The fact that 14 receptions was enough to lead a team in receptions is an entirely different discussion.

Hankins is a better pick than some already mentioned

as a frosh he played in all 13 games had 16 tackles and 1.5 tfl

by contrast Bryant had only 10 tackles that year

I thought Carp stepped in too.  Am I remembering when Carp broke his leg?

here's one nobody has mentioned

AJ Trapasso in 2005 a freshman who was our #1 punter and avg 40.4 per punt with only 3 TB,s and 19 inside the 20 and 13 FC's

he helped us finish 13th nationally in net punting that year

RE: Freshman Impact Players since Tressel took over

i think i saw one brief mention above but John Simon for sure

he played 15 tackles, 4 TFL, 1.5 sacks, a FF and a pass BU and only played in 12 games,

and correct me if i missed it but Cam Heyward

33 tackles 10 TFL, 2.5 sacks, 3 PD and a FF

now thats an impact freshman

Re: Freshman Impact Players since Tressel took over

I think pretty much every year there are at least one or two that either start or get a lot of time other than special teams, last year there were probably 4....this year I could see even more

Christian Bryant should be on the list as well
