Re: Johnny Townsend to sign with Alabama?
From the O Zone: By BCast on 17:41:57 02/06/13 This is only an educated guess based on all the facts I have currently, included what Meyer had to say and what I've heard from Townsend's camp. I know Meyer is extremely conscious of oversigning. He does not want to be accused of that, ever. Especially right now when Ohio State has such positive momentum going. He would rather not take a kid than go over the 82 limit and have people criticizing him and Ohio State publicly. They never expected to land Wilson, Clark, Elliott and Bell. When they got all four, Meyer realized they were going to be over the 82 limit if they took everyone. I'm guess he called Townsend and asked him if he could wait until after NSD to make his decision. Townsend was probably upset because he already had a similar offer from Alabama. My thinking is Meyer expects a few more kids to leave on their own, taking them below the 82 mark. That's when they can officially bring Townsend on board without causing controversy. Now the ball is in Townsend's court as to whether he wants to trust Meyer that everything will work out. Again, that's just my best guess but I bet I'm in the ballpark.

Re: Johnny Townsend to sign with Alabama?
I would have to speculate that perhaps Alabama is no longer a possibility either and that having to come up with a plan C could be drawling this out?

O Zone follow-up..
I think Meyer and the staff believe the attrition will be there. But they can't promise Townsend it will happen. My guess (and it is a guess) is that they expected a Medshirt for Jamie Wood. However, the young mans shoulder is doing better and he wants to make another go of it. That would have been Townsends 'ship. No one expects the shoulder to hold up..they hope it does...but most believe the odds are against him. So as you say, I think Urbs told him to wait until they get the work someone is leaving and then he can come on board.

Re: Johnny Townsend to sign with Alabama?
If true, it's unfortunate, but I wouldn't trade Urban's aggressiveness on the recruiting trail for a punter.

Re: Johnny Townsend to sign with Alabama?
For the record, Alabama already has 25 players signed.

Not quite sure what is meant by this... I believe Alabama has already had like 5 kids enroll early, so they'll count towards last years class, leaving their 2013 enrolling (not signing LOI, but enrolling in August 2013) class at ~20.
Someone, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.
Most surprising would be that this kid even got an offer from Alabama... I think I've read that their startin punter is there for one more year and their backup has 3 years of eligibility left... Again, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

buckeyedanpt2 wrote: Again not buying it. Makes no sense. The only way they'd do that is if they were getting him a baseball scholly or something crazy like that.
Folks are looking for reasons to worry about something. OSU needs a punter and has no reason to worry about schooly numbers. Even if they go over by a couple the odds that they can't get back down by fall (when it counts) is crazy. They could easily add all 25 and probably Elder or somebody else later and be fine. I really don't think that would be legal. Put a guy on a ship from a different sport then put him on football for 2014 in Jan.

http://www.orlandosentinel.com...,0,1693457.postAccording to this, the speculation that his offer was pulled is false. They are dealing w a family matter.

I get really fen’ confused on all of this. What makes the difference if the kids who enroll early can be counted towards last year’s class? Plus Bama is fen’ known for taking more than 25 anyway, duh!!. Plus you still can only have 85 (unless your on probation) one way or the other come spring!!

A bird in the hand is better than two in the bush. Plus, football wise, Alabama can offer everything (perhaps more) that Ohio State can. I don't know if academics is also a consideration for him.
