Re: Corey Smith commits to Ohio State

Was wondering about Smith.
With all the handwringing and projections here recently over how this class would finish, he was the forgotten man.
Not sure why. Greene had him all but committed 2 weeks ago.

247 reports an offer from Georgia and rates him a 95.  4 star is 90-97 so they see him as a mid to high 4 star talent.

RE: Corey Smith commits to Ohio State

Ohio State adds former Buchtel WR Corey Smith as 23rd pledge in 2013 recruiting class

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Ohio State has added the extra playmaker that it was looking for in this 2013 recruiting class as BuckeyeSports.com and other outlets are reporting that former Buchtel receiver Corey Smith has decided to become a Buckeye.

Smith is coming out of East Mississippi Community College and had previously given an oral commitment to Mississippi State. He also played one year at Grand Rapids Community College. He will have two years of eligibility remaining at Ohio State.

“Corey has so much talent, it's scary,” said Ricky Powers, his coach at Buchtel and a former running back at Michigan. “On top of that, he's a hard worker. And to get to the point that he is right now, it's amazing that he's come back. I think he can come in right away and be a big-play guy. He has that potential. I'm not just saying that because he was one of my guys.

“I love the Big Ten, and I played in the Big Ten, and Corey is fast. You've never seen someone run routes like this. He's deceptively fast, and he can catch. If Ohio State got him, God bless them, they'll win a lot of games with him.”

Smith is ranked as a four-star recruit by Rivals.com, which ranked him as the overall No. 18 junior college prospect in the country. Ohio State now has 23 oral commitments in its 2013 class, with National Signing Day eight days away. With current scholarship numbers, the Buckeyes should be able to add one more recruit to the class. But getting a receiver like Smith fills a need.

Smith's final game at Buchtel was the Division III state title game as a junior in 2010. In the spring of 2011, before his senior year, the school realized that Smith's previous early high school year before he transferred to Buchtel would probably not allow him to graduate with the credits he needed to play right away in Division I football. Powers said Tuesday it was almost like Smith didn't exist at his previous school, and Buchtel's academic counselors decided his best path was to take the GED and move on to junior college.

Smith did that, and after two years he's now ready for the Big Ten, on and off the field.

“People don't understand how hard it is to go to junior college,” Powers said. “I don't know too many kids who could come from where Corey Smith has come from and do all the things he had to do. And I think he's a little more mature now. I'm glad it happened this way. He was around some people that wanted to accomplish some goals and now look at him. When you talk to him, he's a different kid now. I'm elated for him.”

Hunt down to Cal and Oregon.
Staff will hold a spot for Bell.
Probably effects Wilson, Clark, Timmons and Elder
Depending on Bell, I assume we have room for 1-2 of them.

Paul Keels will undoubtedly screw that up for the next few years.  Corey Brown, Devin Smith, Corey Smith...

RE: Corey Smith commits to Ohio State

Is 4-star WR Corey Smith headed to Ohio State?

STARKVILLE — Is another Mississippi State commitment heading elsewhere?

Four-star receiver Corey Smith, arguably the best receiver MSU has tracked this recruiting season, de-committed from MSU this afternoon and committed to Ohio State, according to 247sports.com. The East Mississippi Community College star reportedly committed to MSU on Dec. 9 following a visit to Starkville.

Update, 4:26 p.m.: However, EMCC coach Buddy Stephens is refuting the 247sports.com report this afternoon.

“Corey is visiting Tennessee next weekend,” Stephens told the Clarion-Ledger. “He hasn’t committed to anybody.”

An Ohio State coach visited Smith today in Scooba, home of EMCC. Smith is also re-tweeting reports of his apparent commitment to the Buckeyes on Twitter.

Rumors of Smith flipping to Ohio State have been rumbling since he decided to visit the Buckeyes on Jan. 11. The Akron, Ohio native may be the most talented player in the Bulldogs’ highly-regarded corps of committed receivers, which will stand at seven players if Smith does leave for Ohio State.

Adding some spice to the storyline is Urban Meyer, the coach at Ohio State and MSU coach Dan Mullen‘s former boss at Bowling Green, Utah and Florida. Meyer reportedly tried to go after receiver Brandon Holloway late in the recruiting process in 2012, too, but the Tampa native ultimately signed with the Bulldogs last February.

Smith attended EMCC in the fall and caught 51 passes for 733 yards and nine touchdowns. He played high school ball at Akron (Ohio) Buchtel, but failed to qualify academically.

MSU appears to be tracking other receivers at the moment. Oklahoma State commitment Fred Ross, a four-star receiver prospect, visited MSU last weekend.

If the report holds true, Smith would be the second player to withdraw a commitment from MSU since Sunday, when South Panola offensive lineman Deon Mix, a member of the Clarion-Ledger‘s 10 most wanted prospects in the state, re-opened his recruitment.

MSU is also in an apparent late battle to sign Houston High defensive end Chris Jones, who remains committed to the Bulldogs despite taking an unexpected visit to Ole Miss last weekend. Jones is rated as high as the No. 2 prospect in the nation by 247sports.com and has been committed to MSU since the summer.

Twenty-two players, not counting Smith, remain committed to MSU. National signing day is Feb. 6.

RE: Corey Smith commits to Ohio State

He only has 2 years of eligibilty left? Well with philly, spencer, thomas, smith, and marshall probably getting all of the reps this year it is best corey smith RS and contribute in 2014 when philly, fields, and possibly devin smith are gone. We need WRs and with Clark probably heading down south and Wilson not a true WR, I am ok with this pick up. Corey Smith worked hard for his offer and looked pretty smooth on his route running in his videos.

2014 recruiting wish list
1. Kyle Allen
2. Jamarco Jones
3. Raekwon McMillan
