Re: ESPN campaigning against Urban Meyer and Ohio State

I will say this much - the other day I was flipping through the channels and one of the ESPN channels (I think it was ESPNU but I can't recall for certain) had a few talking heads discussing college recruiting.  They proceeded to run an ENTIRE SEGMENT about how Urban is trying to "poach" Oregon recruits.  The segment probably lasted 5 minutes and the entire time there was a graphic on the screen that read "Urban Meyer going after Oregon recruits".

It struck me as odd because:

1) I've never seen them devote an entire segment to any other coach who goes after recruits that have already given "verbal" commitments (and we know MANY coaches do this, including every last one in the SEC)

2) The tone/vibe of the discussion made it sound like Urban was the only coach engaging in this kind of recruiting tactic.  Unless he really is the only coach going after Oregon recruits - because they didn't mention one other coach.

They even went as far to close their discussion by reassuring the viewer that Oregon had nothing to worry about because their program is now considered elite with or without Chip Kelly and the hosts were certain that Urban wouldn't be able to poach many of the recruits anyway.  They basically ended the segment by saying it was a non-story, as they felt Oregon's verbals were solid.

So, they ran an entire segment on (in their words) a "non-story".  Which means the purpose of that segment was...what?  Apparently to inform America that Urban Meyer is trying to get a couple of Oregon recruits to switch their commitment, even though they aren't going to.

I'm not saying the OP is on to something, but I'm trying to wrap my head around the purpose of ESPN running that 5-minute segment.

Yes, thats why I just read an insider article that proclaimed Meyer the 2nd best recruiter in teh nation behind SAban.

Also, it is clear that ESPN has not respect for Urban otherwise they would have hired him as an analyst in his year off (err wait).  Well then he went to OSU so now they don't like him anymore otherwise they would have had him join the Gameday crew at the National Championship game, err wait.

Continue your conspiracy theory.

12-0, regardless of conference is an accomplishment that doesn't happen too often.

Oregon recruits, that's the best they have. Poaching Oregon recruits? Every athlete with talent receives attention and it doesn't stop because of a verbal.
Men who are authentic become relevant.  Men who compromise authenticity to be relevant become corrupt.

The SEC is their baby, and they will do what they can to protect it. The Buckeyes are once again their biggest threat. With Meyer as coach, and his ability to recruit nationally, he is in the process of making the Buckeyes an elite team once again, and a true competitor  against any team in the nation. ESPiN will continue to take their jabs at OSU, but with Ubran as the head coach it should have little effect on recruiting.

ESPN went to the Bret Beilema school of hypocrisy!

Beilema was up at arms about Urban Meyer "poaching" Dodson, and as soon as he's hired at Arkansas he poaches a K-State verbal to play for the Razorbacks.

Why don't you constant ESPN hates us posters grow up. Tired of it. If you're a big fish, like OSU is, you're going to get more than your share of attention, both positive AND negative.

Of course this is correct. It is so tiresome to see this board littered with whiners about the Buckeyes getting "picked on." Nobody gives a damn about the Michigan States, Wisconsins.... Ohio State is still the big fish here and Urban Meyer is a hugely polarizing figure. The Big Ten schools better try to keep up and change the way they do business or they will wallow in mediocrity.

I know it is a practice that some coaches do ( stealing recruits) but it certainly doesn't make Urban look good. Other schools have complained about his tactics.

Being a Duck fan, you could steal the two recruits and we would still smoke you on the field. Would love to have a home and home with you. I say we settle it there.

You guys had your chance a few years ago in the Rose Bowl. If I remember right, not much of a game. Score closer than it should have been. Going forward, maybe you lose some of your ability to "smoke" teams due to coaching change and NCAA sanctions. Future is not as bright as you make it.
