Defensive recruits > Offensive recruits in 12' & 13'

My impression is that we've recruited better talent on the defensive side of the ball than on the offensive side.  Do you believe that is an accurate assessment?

I agree and I'm glad. The college game is all about recruiting depth and flexibility on the defensive side of the ball. Grab a few playmakers and a great Qb and everyone else on offense improves by their play.

The warm breeze of September optimism in Ann Arbor, is once again replaced with the cool October wind of reality.

I want to say yes, thinking about Bosa, Spence, Washington, Burrows, Apple, Schutt, Mitchell. Reeves and on and on...

our best player could be Jalin, Elliott, or Barrett though. Michael Thomas will be great I think

Urban has always been better at landing the great defensive talent than offensive talent.

I think people just seem to underestimate the WRs and RBs we've gotten over this year. I think it's close, and there are some great D recruits, but Barret, Marshall, Elliot, Baugh, and some other possible guys still yet to commit are a very good core group for the next 3-5 years.

There is also the idea floating around that Munger or Price could help us out on the OL.

I tend to agree, that overall the last 2 years the defensive recruits have been greater. I think the '14 recruits are where we see the upswing in offensive players, while keeping the same high level on the defensive side. As they say it takes a year when implementing a new offense, so for this year I think the play book will be completely opened up.

I think Urban figures that he can scheme a productive offense with the right coaches, but a great defense needs dominant players especially on the DL. You can only blitz soo much till a great QB picks you apart. Meyer is very smart recruiting the defensive side up another rung in talent.

Part of it is because players like Marshall, Elliott and Barrett committed early and committed without much competition.

Had Marshall waited until the UA game and picked between OSU, Bama, and Notre Dame or Elliot did the same, they would seem like much bigger gets.

If your opponent only scores 12 points you don't have to have an offensive juggernaut. With guys like Braxton and Hyde and Philly and Jalin you get to have both.

When we played LSU and Florida and Texas our defense didn't hold their own. USC 2008 crushed us too.

RE: Defensive recruits > Offensive recruits in 12'

Its an interesting topic to debate no doubt.

It seems like the defense may have the edge over the offense considering last years majorly impressive dline haul, but offense doesnt need a star in every spot like a good defense would have. especially in college. It really only takes a few plays and an offense can explode. a defense needs to consistently grind down an offense so the talent needs to be everywhere

RE: Defensive recruits > Offensive recruits in 12'

I assume that a couple of the DL move over to the OL (say Munger and Price), add in Garder and Lisle to that and the OL list looks pretty good.

Barrett at QB is big.

Assuming we get Gibson to add to Elliot, Marshall, and Baugh, the playmaking ability is much greater. Jacobs may be a sleeper and one of the DB's could move over. So that looks like a big big impact.

On the defense, last year was my far the biggest impact, and this years hall is great from front to back. If Bell is added, it is over the top.

It is pretty close, but probably the edge to the defensive side. Overall a great class.  This years class has the potential to be one of the best in a long time.

A couple years down the road (2015), the OL might look like:

Centers: Boren, Elflein
Guards: O'Conner, Gardner, Farris, Munger
Tackle: Dodson, Price, Decker, Lisle

That is a pretty solid OL compared to where we were when UM arrived.

I've posted it before and believe that the 12 class was the best defensive talent recruited in the country.

Defense wins championships.

See 1-7-2013...and yeah, Bama had the offense to go with it, but they had the defense keeping the Irish offense on the bench for 2/3 of the game... which proved a pretty effective strategy for unhinging the stingy Irish defense (which was the nation's second ranked in points against going into the NCG).

Over the past 2 classes Bosa,Washington,Spence,Apple, and Mitchell have been the best/most hyped recruits,IMO. That said, Brionte Dunn looked good in his limited playing time-would he have been talked about as much as Todd Gurley or TJ Yeldon if he got as much PT as those two RBs-who knows. Who will get more field time as a frosh-Eli Apple or Ezekiel Eliott? Marshall or Mitchell? Baugh or Hill? Jacobs or Lee? Is Trey Johnson better for his position-LB-than Evan Lisle is for his-OT? We can't honestly say at this point.

There's a certain kind of reassuring white rock....and some people do well with that.....

Does it really matter. What matters is that COMPETITION makes an individual and a team better and with Urban you know you will get competitive practices. It does not matter if Urban brings in 3,4, or 5 star players, they will all have to compete and the best one PLAYS. Urban wants his best 22 players to get most of the playing time as do I.
