There's a lot of concern.  He was also hand-picked by Harsin (who of course is no longer here) who worked out every QB in the state and chose Swoopes because of his talent, upside and the way he quickly picked things up.  Trent Dilfer said something similar during the Elite 11 event.  The kid's physical tools are off the chart.  It's just a matter of putting all the pieces together and doing that knowing that in high school he was a glorified wildcat QB and safety so he needs a lot of foundation work that a lot of kids coming out of high school already have.

There's always a risk with a player like that but the reward makes it worth it.  Our depth chart also allows for a little risk at that position especially since we already have a commit in the '14 class from the best QB in state.  Bottom line though, it's not worth taking a risk on a kid like Swoopes if you're not going to put the trench players on the field to help him.  That's what we need in this class which is why we had to pass on a kid like Mitchell.  If only we had a couple of A&M's new-found surplus of scholarships to offer.

Not a 5 star, but Ohio State did pass on the greatest DE to EVER come out of Ohio, a future 1st round pick and a future NFL HOF in Taco Charlton

You'll note of our 13 commits we have just 1 LB and/or DE in this class and 5 OLs or TEs and we're hoping to land at least 1 more OT and a DT before signing day. That is where our need is, especially in a small class where every take has to fill a very specific need. It sucks but sometimes that's the way it is. It's a numbers game.

Should have joined the SEC with A&M

funny but sadly charles woodson may be

I feel soiled just typing that name
I feel VERY confident in saying that Charles Woodson was not the best DE to come out of Ohio...

I know Texas is limited but they did take two outside LB's.  One is a three star and one a four star.  Not sure how they are doing on MLB's but you'd think they would have taken Mitchell over one of the OLB and/or tried to convert Mitchell to a OLB.  Just a thought

Its possible Texas wasn't as high on Mitchell as OSU was. I have read where some people saw him more as a DE in college.

Texas is such a larger state, and has so many elite players, and schools recruiting the state that hey can't offer or get every kid with talent.

We only have one true, guaranteed LB in this class and that is Deoundrei Davis, a blue chip prospect in his own right.  Naashon Hughes could play one of many positions for us including OLB, but if he stays on defense it will likely be at SDE but there is a lot of talk that he will make a move to TE.  He's a tall kid with a wide frame who could easily be up to 6'5 240+ by his soph. season. His brother is a 6'7 320 freshman OT at Texas so size runs in the family.

Mitchell was never a MLB prospect for us.  He's not a typical Big XII MLB and doesn't fit anything we have done at that position for years and even if he did, we for the first time in a long time, have a very nice depth chart in the middle (see Dalton Santos from last year's class who fits our MLB mold and showed tremendous promise as a true freshman this year behind a damn good true soph).  Mitchell would be a pass rusher for us playing both standing up on the outside and with his hand in the dirt (similar to the way we used Jeffcoat and Okafor this year and Kindle, Orakpo, etc. in years past).  Problem is that we signed 8 kids in the past two classes that fit that bill.  While pass rushers are kinda like good DBs and WRs, you can never have enough, when ships are tight sometimes you have to put a position of strength on the back burner to address positions of need, especially if those needs are glaring and our needs on the OL are just that.

Just to be clear, we may still wind up picking up another DE or OLB. In fact, there is a JUCO kid we might flip from Tennessee. Kinda depends on how many ships we really have available which itself depends on transfers, early departures, early enrollees, etc. Right now, based on the number of graduating seniors and projected early-enrollees, we are just about full but I think by signing day we may be able to pull 15 or so in this class.
