Would Ohio State lose something special if....
most of the kids playing for us were from out of state? Especially given the fact that Ohio is one of the top states in the nation in producing talent? I looked at our 2013 recruiting class and by my count we have 9 guys from the home state and 12 from elsewhere. It's happened before that out of state kids outnumber Ohio kids in a class but it is rare. I personally feel alot of pride lookng at a roster dominated by kids from the Buckeye state. I hope this doesn't become the norm.

Ohio is not the top producing state and if we only get guys from here we will have 0 shot vs other big schools. 1.California 2.Florida 3.Georgia 4.Texas.... Those are your top 4 states.Ohio would be next.

I know Urban recruits the best from everywhere. But we need to get at least 60 % of our roster out of Ohio. Just to keep the fence up around Ohio. And to keep CC of AA away from the best Ohio players and there HS coaching staffs.

Re: Would Ohio State lose something special if....
I have thought the same thing from time to time. I hate when top Ohio kids choose our rivals. But those kids dont bleed Scarlet and Gray like I do. All players (including OOS kids) are true Buckeyes in my eyes once they sign a LOI. My only worry is that players coming from far away will get homesick and choose to leave.

Re: Would Ohio State lose something special if....
Good question. I would hope the Buckeyes continued to get the best from Ohio first. Then fill in with stars from out of state.
I realize the population and other factors means Ohio does not produce as many as say the 1970's.

Re: Would Ohio State lose something special if....
I see your point, but winning is the most important thing. Some of the most legendary Buckeyes were from out of state... Tatum and George, for example, more recently Krenzel, Jenkins and JL. Roby, Hyde and Hankins from last years team. You do need to have a good relationship with coaches in state, and the fact is, when times get tough, in state kids are your base, but getting the best talent available is the best thing you can do for a program.

Re: Would Ohio State lose something special if....
Maintaining a death grip on the top in-state talent is important if we want to dominate Michigan and the rest of the Big Ten. Recruiting premiere out-of-state players is important if we want to dominate the national landscape and win NC's.
So there is some give-and-take to both strategies. If we pass on in-state talent for out-of-state talent, that could come back to bite us (especially as it pertains to Michigan). When Cooper was here, he did a hell of a job recruiting national talent, but missed on some in-state studs. So while our teams were some of the most talented in the nation (under Coop), our players never seemed to have the understanding or passion for the rivalry with the team up north. Tressel changed all that.
I think it's important that Urban finds the right balance. Yes, we need to sprinkle in some out-of-state talent, but personally, I would rather win & lose with a team made up of (mostly) Ohio kids. We don't want to see top Ohio talent heading up north (a la Charles Woodson & Desmond Howard). We know how that story ends.

Re: Would Ohio State lose something special if....
with the score something like 60-43, Illinois, with 7 minutes left, I have decided to vote that Coach Urban can recruit anywhere he wants ..anybody he wants...even if they come from some other state,,,even if most of the team is not from Ohio.... It is now 64-46.....Illinois...scores like this can set my little-pea--size mind straight!!! Go Bucks! ( And I hope this just is not another nit-picking critique of our coach ) We did go O-H-12-O & our defense was terrific at the end...our offensive line was better than I have seen in a while as well! ...it is 69-48...do you think the people in Champaign care where those guys came from?

Texas #4 ? I doubt that's true but if so I'm surprised. Thought they would be #1 or 2... experto40 wrote: Ohio is not the top producing state and if we only get guys from here we will have 0 shot vs other big schools. 1.California 2.Florida 3.Georgia 4.Texas.... Yes, how many times have those 2 and three Star kids from Ohio rise and become great buckeyes. Plus I love to see us win with our own home grown talent from our own back yard. We do need to recruit outside the state to be successful but hate passing on solid ohio kids who always wanted to wear those legendary scarlet and gray patterned uniforms we love.

I would put the top 10 Ohio recruits up against the top 10 fromanywhere, including Flor,Tex and Calif. From 11 to 50 top players, those three have the edge but 1 to 10, Ohio is as good as anywhere.IMO.

Not in 2014. That class will have very few OH kids. The rest will be from GA!

I agree. One of the main reasons I despise Meatchicken is the fact that they, a state-supported school, have to go outside their state and, primarily, into ours to be competitive. It would therefore be hypocritical of me to say I'm OK with my alma mater gong to other states and recruiting THEIR players to play for us. Ohio has a very rich tradition of great high school football which is why so many schools recruit here.
I have no problem with getting some kids from out of state, especially those who are Ohio State fans in the first place. But I think we should always try to get the best from Ohio first and sprinkle in some blue-chippers from around the country as necessary.

There is much more to a kid in high school than relying on some "recuiting experts" that handout stars. These coaches know that and this is why they give some of these so-called lower rated kids from Ohio an opportunity. For every Santanio Holmes from FL, there could be a Nick Mangold from Kettering out there. It isn't all about the stars. Go BUCKS!!! OHIO STATE in '13!!!

I hope this doesn't become the norm. If it got to be something like 30-70 in-state/OOS, yes, something would be lost. If one class has slighty more OOS recruits, no biggee. IMO, a lot of younger tOSU fans just want to have a team that plays like they do on the x-box-they don't see the bigger picture of what the team means to people around the state. Talent acquisition should always be priority #1 for the staff, but if there is a choice between 2 prospects and the only real difference is one lives in Virginia and the other in Dayton, you always go for the homestate kid.
There's a certain kind of reassuring white rock....and some people do well with that..... Iggy Pop

We get most of the top talent from Ohio, some just choose to go else where. The largest percent of Buckeyes have always been Ohio kids, it's just that most major football programs must recruit nationally, in order to compete nationally. We get most of our states best, and we also get some of the best talent nationally, can't ask for more than that.
