Re: Butler JC LB Tommy Sanders visiting OSU.
According to ESPN he didn't have an offer yet-although it seems kind of dumb to bring a JUCO in for a visit w/out an offer. He is the 2nd JUCO LB to come in for a visit this year.
There's a certain kind of reassuring white rock....and some people do well with that..... Iggy Pop

It makes a lot of sense to go after a JUCO LB in this class. We need LBs that are college now, not 2 years from now. At this point at Linebacker we've got Shazier and whole lot of huge ?s

Williams, Marcus, Crowell, and Roberts will have 9 months to make an impact. Way too early to give up on Grant. Could end up with 2 more in this years class, with potential to start as a true freshmen. Don't need no JUCOs. We will be just fine.

Hopefully Curtis Grant will figure it out, thought he could be great but he isn't looking too good so far.

Re: Butler JC LB Tommy Sanders visiting OSU.
It's true that we've got young talent, but aside from Shazier none of them have much real playing time and those that have haven't shown themselves to be impact players - hence the ?s. We're extremely young at LB and while some of those guys may very well turn out to be great players they're not at this point. Depth at LB is also an issue and you need more than just the 3 staters to field a quality team. I agree that we don't NEED a juco LB in this class, but adding a veteran guy with college experience to the group does make a lot of sense. WJSilverBullet wrote:

Re: Butler JC LB Tommy Sanders visiting OSU.
At this stage of the game, all of those freshmen from this year do have college experience a D-1 (they didn't exactly spend the season playing Angry Birds on the sidelines)... And as well, regardless of playing time, those guys also already have a leg up on someone who hasn't been studying the playbook in Urban's system. If I recall correctly, Larry Grant (who was something like the JUCO defensive player of the year) took some time to catch on and break into the starting lineup -- and he was a beast. Whatever ultimately happens, experience is an issue regardless of who comes in. But when itcoomes down to it, I'd prefer to save the offer for someone else. Would someone give a brief update on the freshmen linebackers:Jamal Marcus, Josh Perry, Luke Roberts, Carmen Williams and David Perkins.

Marcus looks to be a LEO type kid going forward. Played a lot on special teams this season Perkins to me looks like a STAR candidate...if not OLB Williams will push for the starting job at MLB next season Roberts special teams Perry will most likely take Sabino's spot at OLB ROCK2 wrote: Would someone give a brief update on the freshmen linebackers:Jamal Marcus, Josh Perry, Luke Roberts, Carmen Williams and David Perkins.

Perry has had playing time, and done very well with it. How could you have watch him play, and not been impressed. You couldn't have been paying attention. My bet is he will start at OLB next season. Shazier won the starting job midway through his freshman season, so youth, and lack of experience wasn't the problem with him. Why do think it will be a problem with these other young men? Why do you think they won't be ready nine months from now? Most of them are currently freshmen, or redshirt freshmen. You question them because of lack of playing time, but you what to bring in somebody to take away playing time. Do you question them the following season too, do to lack of experience? When do you give them their shot. If I'm a recruit seeing a potential team bring in JUCOs, that may lead me to question if I will get a shot at early playing time. It could kill the deal with me. You also question depth. We have 3 LBs that are going into their 3rd season at OSU, and 5 going into their 2nd season. I'm sure we will bring in one, or two more in this recruiting class, with the potential to start. How many do we need? Injuries slowed down a few, but the youth excuse will be less of a problem nine months from now. Sabino was thought to be a bust after his So. season, but developed into a quality LB his final two seasons, and yet most of you have already given up on Grant. My bet is Meyer will not take a JUCO in this class. Too many good young players competing for playing time, not to see some of them step up. Too many top recruits in the next two seasons to waste a spot on a JUCO.

I hope so......but at this point in his career, Sabino was at least getting special teams playing time. Grant can't see the field.....EVER. --------------------------------------------- --- creekman wrote: acbucksfan4 wrote: Hopefully Curtis Grant will figure it out, thought he could be great but he isn't looking too good so far. Re: Butler JC LB Tommy Sanders visiting OSU.
I saw Perry play. He was servicable but hardly showed himself to be an impact player this year. Good athlete though and he has a bright future. And yes Shazier stepped up as a freshman and won a starting job, but he proved himself to be an impact player when given the chance. None of these young guys have done the same yet. We had a serious need at LB this year. At one point we were down to Shazier and a fullback as our only two usable linebacker - this hurt us on defense but also on special teams. And despite the need not one of those young guys really stepped up to fill the void the way Shazier did the year before. That has to be a concern moving forward. Meyer has said that the LB position is his biggest concern for next year, so I'm certianly not the only one who notices this. If he thinks brining in a JUCO lb will help the team next year than he probably knows what hes doing. Re: Butler JC LB Tommy Sanders visiting OSU.
The fact is that we're short at linebacker. It ended up not hurting us too bad this year but it could burn us next year if they're not careful. Meyer knows this which is why he's trying to find linebackers that are ready to play now and contribute to the 2013 team, whether they're from high school or junior college.
With where we're at at LB right now yes, some of the young will develop to we will likely have enough to field a starting lineup of high quality linebackers. But to have the depth where you want it to be for defense and especially special teams then we're counting on pretty much All of the young guys to develop quickly and stay healthy, which is unlikely.
This is probably a plan B type of thing, but if we don't get both Johnson and Mitchell or one of the few others we're after then we're unlikely to find another high school kid that's college ready this late in the game. I'm not saying that this guy Sanders is necessarily the answer, but it does make a lot of sense that they're looking at the JUCO ranks as well.

Hawk was an impact player Laurenitis was an impact player Shazier is an impact player. Sabino was never an impact player. It took him 5 years to evolve into a serviceable starter. At the end of the day, his leadership was more impactful than his play. ...and Grant is not "moving forward"...that's the problem and the reason he didn't see a another snap at LB after game 5.
