Urban Needs To Recruit This Gunslinger From NC

(LAKE NORMAN CITIZEN) — The scoreboard, by the end of Friday night’s game between Davidson Day and Harrells Christian, did not tell the full story.

There just wasn’t enough room.

The N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association’s Division II semifinal showdown between the dynamic yet contrasting offenses of Davidson Day and Harrells defied non-PlayStation football logic and provided defensive coaches with lengthy to-shore-up lists.

The teams combined for 184 points, 59 first downs and 1,590 yards of offense as Davidson Day pulled out a 104-80 victory to advance to next week’s state final against Christ School.

Davidson Day quarterback Will Grier, a highly regarded junior being recruited by Florida, Tennessee, Oregon and North Carolina, among others, completed 34-of-41 passed for a national record 774 yards and a state record 11 touchdowns. He also ran for two scores.

The game, held at Hopewell High because Davidson Day does not have a home field, lasted three hours and 40 minutes, longer than most college and NFL games with commercial breaks. Davidson led 54-36 — at the half.

“We knew it’d be high scoring, but we didn’t expect this,” said Grier. “The scoreboard doesn’t have three digits for a reason. This doesn’t happen very often.”

Just a quick glance through his stats; even in his bad games the kid still put up more than 5 yards/attempt with good %comp. Should be good to make coach Urban's and tOSU's offense (spread offense that can equally score on the ground or in the air) much more difficult to defend.

Yet Mitch Trubisky, who went 36-48 and 478 yards passing plus 98 rushing yards against St. Ed's, one of the highest ranked teams in the country, isn't good enough for OSU.

I meant according to many posters on this board he's not good enough. The kid has been flat-out laughed at by many people on here and I've never seen anyone suggest that we might have missed out on a very good QB, which we did. I've also heard some mention that Meyer's offer was one of those, "it's an offer but we don't really want you" offers. He's right in our own backyard. He can run and pass and has done it against the best high school competition. It makes no sense that he's not scarlet and gray.

Agreed. Urban Meyer is following Jim Tressel's pattern in recruiting quarterbacks--the option QB who needs to work on throwing the ball.

So you're saying you know more about recruiting a high school QB than Coach Meyer?

i know he has shown good at 7 on 7 camps, but he plays at a very, very low level of competition.

Or following his own pattern, which included 2-time NC winner Tim Tebow. I'd be satisfied with that.

Unlike JT Urb runs a system that needs a running QB to work

Leak wasn't the greatest runner and Brantley isn't much either. Not saying We need a stiff at QB but,  One that can pass is a plus

Re: Urban Needs To Recruit This Gunslinger From NC

Meyer didn't recruit Leak.

Braxton Miller's, as far as running ability, don't grow on trees. I think Meyer is content with a QB that is simply mobile, they don't have to rush for 1,500 yards a season.

Especially with the types of RB's that he can get at OSU, he'll be fine using them more in the running game.

Just a follow up...His HS has 120 student in it...if that give you any idea the size and competition he plays.   They'd struggle against D6 teams in Ohio.

RE: Urban Needs To Recruit This Gunslinger From NC

As I remember Urban has never had a gunslinger start for him at QB? ( exception Leak who was recruited by? former Illini coach. I would love to see a QB at TOSU that won a NC or 2 and went on to multiple Superbowl wins ending up in the NFL hall of fame. We have never had one that filled all of the above and I don't expect under Urban we will. This is not the type of QB that Urban usually recruits

Brantley was a reverse to what Urban has started at QB.

I don't think there were any Div 1 recruits on defense in this game...

RE: Urban Needs To Recruit This Gunslinger From NC

Unfortunately, you don't see QBs who do both anymore, but don't feel too bad because there isn't an SEC coach right now who can claim what you're asking for either. The differences between what it takes to win in college and the NFL these days are bigger than you might think, as guys like Cam Newton and his Carolina Panthers are learning the hard way.

Aside from Troy Aikman, I can't even think of any other college QB in the last 30+ years who won a NC and multiple Super Bowls (or even one Superbowl for that matter -- and just in case you were thinking about it, Brady wasn't the starter at tSUN in 1997).

Fun fact: When Troy Smith won the Heisman in 2006 with the Buckeyes, he was not only the first QB in Columbus to do it, but he was also the first Big 10 QB in the era of the forward pass to win the award. Buckeyes have overwhelmingly been a run-based offense in a run-based conference. Even if Braxton wins the award, it won't be because of his arm.
