do you think tv contracts came into play at all???

glancing at the differant rankings from differant sites it struck me how on the FOX-scout site top 20 teams that play in conferences with tv contracts with fox were mainly higher than rivals or espn.tongue

on espn the top sec schools got the edge over what fox rated them.tongue

im sure it was just a clerical error---

fox rankings for fox teams-

1-ohio st  espn had them 3
2-michigan  espn had them 6
4-ucla  espn had them 12--fairly big gap
11-nebraska espn had them 23---pretty big gap
14-washington  espn had them 18
15-oklahoma espn had them 16
17-oregon  espn had them 26--pretty big gap
18-usc  espn had them 14--the only one they had higher

the top 3 from the sec on espn--
1-bama fox had them 3
2-florida fox had them 8
5-ole miss fox had them 9

not a major conspiracy but just interesting each group put their headliners higher.

It don't matter to me, I think scout is off, but it shakes out on field and the draft. JMO

ESPN's recruiting rankings are the worst and have been for a long time.

I think you are right in that there is a lot of subjectivity involving rankings as all the services have their strengths and weaknesses.  IMO, Rivals has better evaluation services for southern kids while Scout is better in the midwest/northeast.

Arguing that a proposition is true because belief in it has good consequences, or that it is false because belief in it has bad consequences is often an irrelevancy.

Absolutely low. College football is big business as we all know and they will hardly turn down a chance to promote their brand.

And we're seeing the same thinking in this thread.......northerners see eSPIN as more biased while the southerners see scout as having worse evaluations.

You may have had a point there if you actually used a reputable service. ESPN ratings are absolutely horrendous.

The other services don't have a TV network. His point was about FOX and ESPN biased towards their teams.

I think you are on to something. Not just with this post , you see a decided ESPN slant towards the SEC. It would only be natural for FOX to focus and pimp out another view....if they dont what different would they be offerring?

tongue   That was pretty ingenious....When we see it  in black & white like you have laid it out...it seems pretty clear that the 2 networks have their own favorites & give the benefit of the doubt to the teams on their stations...Good for youtongue

Re: do you think tv contracts came into play at all???

I picked up on what lowiq is saying a few years back, well maybe two. That’s why I try to average them out. I never thought Scout was as biased because; they seem to handle most of the good fan web sites, but for some dumb fen’ reason, I never associated them with Fox. I quess I'm as dumb as some of those southern fence posts; I some times refer some of the sec fans to.

I’ve been doing or keeping track of recruiting since way fen’ back;

When I could only get info from the local newspapers and we didn’t have all these so called gurus picking 4 & 5 stars. They were just called “Blue Chippers” if I recall and Tom Lemmings out of Chicago was probably my only good source from the late 80’s until the 90’s. Over the years I lost all my info, besides he only showed the top 10.

But once I got a computer, I was able to save some of this crap!!, But Lemmings was still the #1 man in my book as far as recruiting. I have his top 10 from 1993 thru 2002 there was another guy Bill Hodges, can’t remember where he was from but when I could get his I would average it out with Lemmings. Now since 2002, I only use Scout and Rivals and average them out as they post all the teams.

Here is what I liked about Lemming; besides his rank, he would always give his “Best Catch”. See if you remember some of these names!! I’m picking some random teams. Georgia only showed up twice in his top ten

1993:

#2: Scum Scott Loeffler?

#4: Notre Dame, Ron Powlus

1994:

#1: Tennessee , Peyton Manning

#2 Ohio State , Orlando Pace

#7:  Penn State , Curtis Enis

1995:

#3: Florida State , Peter Warrick

#10: Scum: Charles Woodson

1996

#1: Ohio State , Andy Katzenmoyer

#3: LSU, Cecil Collins (did he ever get out of prison?)

1997:

#10: Ohio State , Ken-Yon Rambo (what a fen’ dandy he was!! All show and no go!!)

1998:

#1: Scum, Drew Henson

#6: Georgia, Nate Hybi (don’t know, how was he lowiq?)

1999:

#1: Texas , Chris Simms (I can’t remember just where he finally ended up at?)

#2: Georgia, Reggie Brown (another one for ya, lowiq)

#4: Ohio State , Curtis Crosby

2000:

#1: Florida , Brock Berlin

#6: Ohio State , Sam Maldanado (Like Simms, where did he end up at)

2001: no body stuck out

2002: My last Tom Lemmings

#1: Texas , Vince Young

#2: Ohio State , Maurice Clarett (Wow!! we know about him, his good and bad!!)

Not understanding the Simms reference.

He played 4 seasons at Texas, and has some pretty good career numbers.  If his last name wasnt Simms people would probably be impressed with his resume.

who the heck is curtis crosby?

Re: do you think tv contracts came into play at all???

nate hybl was a qb from jeff davis, not to far from where i live--he transferred to oklahoma when uga got quincy carter and played some at oklahoma, maybe even started a few games but wasnt a "star".

reggie brown had a good career at uga and played for a while in the nfl...he may still be??

brown was one of the best athletes to come through georgia high schools in the last 20 years. star football player and a track superstar. he may still hold the state long jump record and was a national level triple jumper i think.

he had a bad knee injury i think it was...somewhere in the legs for sure and came back but never had that explosion he had before the injury. brown and takeo spikes were probably the two best high school players in georgia in the 90s.

He's supposed to get out of prison this summer.  15 year sentence.  Amazing talent, too bad he was out of control and we didn't get to see it.  600 yards in his first 4 games at LSU as a freshman, then broke his leg.  Kicked off the team before his second season.  Transferred to a 1AA school and got kicked off of that.  Still got drafted in the 5th round by Jimmy Johnson at Miami, had 400 yards in 8 games as a rookie.  Then straight to prison, where he spent the last 14 years.

I'll never forget that long TD run for LSU, where he lost his shoe and made the entire run with one shoe on and the other off.  Man that brings back memories.

which side has the bias?

FOX Sports which is elevating the B1G schools,
or
ESPN which is elevating the SEC schools,
or
both?

Interesting indeed!  Just who in the hell can we trust anymore when it comes to college football.

Probably one way someone could check is: To keep track on how a kid started before he was recruited and where he ended after he was recruited!!

I know scout updated the star rating through out the HS season (and only right fully so), didn’t really keep track if it was benefiting a certain conference or not.

and NBC did not feature 1 SEC player announcing their decision during the Army all star game.

I think there is already a handshake agreement between the B1G and FOX for tier 1 TV broadcasting .

I want to die peacefully in my sleep like Grandpa, not panic stricken and screaming like everyone else in the car.
