We were 35 minutes from Pittsburg, and 2 and a half freaking from Cleveland. We played Pittsburgh high schools, we got Pittsburgh local news channels on TV, went to Pirates games in the summer, etc. It's Steeler country through and through. Daily life and family ties trump a line on a map. Somebody from Steubenville or East Liverpool would rather die than root for the Browns. Rooting for the Browns was pretty much an automatic ass kicking in the elementary school days.
Should all those OSU grads in California start rooting for USC? Now for people born in Columbus, with no ties.. they're not real Steeler fans, and maybe you have a point. Exactly, I was born in Eastern PA, raised in East Liverpool, now i live in Canfield. Pittsburgh Sports and media run most of those areas along the Ohio River. Youngstown is about 50/50. It's a family thing. Those same areas of Ohio are all Buckeye towns as well. I grew up in a family that loved the NFL, my personaly love is for my Buckeyes, that I choose to watch and love growing up in the 80s and 90s. My family didn't watch college football, but I did and I honestly would choose NCAA football over NFL anyday of the week.
Once you move west of the counties that touch PA and WV, I see your point but even then there are plenty of people with PA roots living in Ohio like myself all over. This is pretty much it. I grew up in Youngstown, live in Canfield as well, and I'm a steelers fan. 50/50, but trending towards more Steelers fans lately. I blame it on my age. I'm early 40's. I discovered football at the same time as the rise of the Steel Curtain, so I was a bandwagoner, but I was 4 or 5, so I'll forgive myself. My passion for college football is 100 X that of the NFL anyway. All my sports teams are Ohio teams, with the exception being the Steelers. As I have gotten older, I have become far less rabid towards the Browns. I cheer for them most weeks. I have seen all the Steeler SB wins in my lifetime, with my father and family being mostly Browns fans, I'd honestly prefer them to win one before Pittsburgh again as it's been a long time for them. I may have transitioned at some point earlier in my life had the Browns ever ran their team with an ounce of common sense.

Most central Ohio NFL fans root for either Browns, or Bengals. Most Steeler fans around here have ties to that area. Been a Browns fan since I first took interest in the game, at around 7-8 years old. Same goes for baseball, and basketball. Been a Reds fan for just as long. That's over 45 years of loyalty. Was born a Buckeye fan. How's that for loyalty. My question to you dogmilk, would be why do you come over to The Buckeyes site, a college sports form, to spread your BS about a pro team, that has nothing to do with the Buckeyes, Ohio, or most people on this site? Tell me, please, what is your purpose? I would say there's a lot of things you don't understand. Seems like a troll to me.

Re: ohio steeler fans!!
I grew up in the Tuscarawas Valley, New Philly to be exact, almost everyone was a Browns fan, go east to about Cadiz and you could see and feel the difference, more were Steeler fans. As for myself I was a Brown’s fan (Paul Brown), when they fired him and he went to Cincinnati I became a Bengal fan. Even tho I went to many a home Browns games after that (you know those drunken bus trips), I never saw the Bengals play live until they came down here back in the 90’s. Was even at the first Browns regular season home game when they got back into the NFL and their new stadium (just happened I was spending two weeks at “ Put-In-Bay ” and a guy gave me and my girlfriend tickets. Today I’m not that much into pro football, but I still like to see both the Browns and Bengals do well (but to no avail).

Re: ohio steeler fans!!
I can understand places like Steubenville, East Liverpool, and the Youngstown area just like with Michigan and NW Ohio but Steeler fans in the rest of the State really get to me. Then again, I'm a Browns fan living in Pittsburgh, but not from Pittsburgh, so I guess this is a little of the pot calling the kettle black.

Re: ohio steeler fans!!
I honestly don't mind as long as you're consistent. The fans the REALLY irritate me are the ones who root for the Indians, Buckeyes and then the Steelers or the Reds, Buckeyes and then the Steelers. If you're going to root for Pittsburgh then go all the way and root for the Pirates too and why wouldn't you then root for the Pitt Panthers or is it just because they aren't as good as the Buckeyes. Otherwise you're just a true bandwagoner.

Re: ohio steeler fans!!
I am a browns fan from Steubenville and I am a lonely man. Most around the ville are steeler fans mostly because of the success of the team in the 70's and the connection to the steel industry and proximity to pittsburgh.
The only problem I ever have is, whom do I hate more the steelers or ravens? Denver is a distant 3rd. I don't dislike cincy they are like a cousin.

milkdog99 wrote: I don't understand the amount of steeler fans in Ohio! Blows my mind how can you not like the browns!! No freaking loyalty! I would agree with you. Although I grew up in Northeast Ohio, and there was always a strong contingent of Squeeler fans. However, since 1994, it's totally out of control. (Sort of reminds me of what Columbus was like with Michigan Fans before Tressel, it's amazing what winning will do to the other team's fans) When you think about it, dating back to 1989 (almost 24 years ago) the Browns have had three winning seasons, two playoff appearences - no wins, and since they came back in 1999 they are 4-20 against the Steelers. The Steelers have been to 6 ? AFC title games since the Browns left and came back, 3 super bowls, winning 2 of them. I am shocked to see any Browns fans under 30 to be honest. It's safe to say an entire generation of Browns fans have been lost because of the losing.

You are saying root for Cleveland or Cincinnati because they are the home teams, yet there are less home boys on those 2 teams than what the Steelers have. You are rooting for a bunch of players that had to be paid to live in Cleveland and Cincinnati.

Using that logic it seems to me that there should be more Pittsburgh Panther fans and I'm assuming there are just as many Pirate fans too.

Most people here are Pirate fans, but there is no real feel of aggression towards the Indians because they rarely play. Before inter-league did they ever play? I honestly don't know. Most people in PA, "my moms family" are Penn State fans, Pitt is like the little brother just as most all the schools in Ohio are to Ohio State, and Mich schools are to them. The problem with the Pirates, is ownership, many fans have given up on winning and it's hard to justify spending 200 + bucks to support a team that isn't even trying the hide the fact they don't care if they lose. Pittsburgh is a middle class town and people are careful on how they spend money. The Pirates stat wise have one of the most profitable teams compared to what they spend. Then the recent thing with the IRS burnt a lot more bridges with the fans. I do take my boys to a couple games a year, but they would honestly rather go to the science center when I take them.

Re: ohio steeler fans!!
Yeah, I can see eastern Ohio. Personally, I would think the border areas would be where State pride would be the strongest since you are exposed to the most $#!+ talk, but driving distance is obviously a factor; like all the scUM fans in Toledo.
My thing is in Columbus, there are several Squealers bars (Gordy's, Hilliard BDubs, etc) that cater to Squealer fans. The other games are on, but the sound is for the Squealers games. If you are one of the few fans of the Ohio teams, you can't even watch the games there without constantly being razzed by the Squealer fans.
I don't buy the argument that people just want a winner. If that's the case, where are all the Colts fans? They've had a pretty good run and they are only 3 hours away.

Pittsburgh is only about 3 hours away. It's not that unimaginable to me that there are a ton of Steelers fans in Columbus. +1 Exactly! Last time I checked there was no Ohio Browns or Ohio Bengals. They represent Cleveland and Cincinnati, NOT Columbus! Ohio State represents the state of Ohio, is my alma mater and also happens to be located in the town I was raised in. Jesus, can't understand why Cleveland and Cincinnati fans get so butt hurt that more Ohio people aren't following their loser organizations. Should I EXPECT Cleveland or Cincy folks to cheer for the Columbus Blue Jackets? NO. If they do, that's great...welcome. if not, so what??

Re: ohio steeler fans!!
Um yeah. the Bungals also play in Ohio. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely abhor the Steelers (and the Penguins), but I can understand why people who live near the border (particularly down around Jefferson and Columbiana Counties) would root for them. Besides the closer proximity, they've produced more than any team in the NFL in the modern era... a lot more attractive than what's come out of Cleveland in the past 40+ years. I'm a Browns fan by birth and upbringing, but the stories of the old AAFC days, and Jim Brown (blah, blah, blah) can only get you so far. I turned 41 a few weeks ago and I'm still waiting to see a Champion in Cleveland. Hopefully someday before before I die. milkdog99 wrote: I don't understand the amount of steeler fans in Ohio!
