Texas athletics director DeLoss Dodds just released the followin
Texas athletics director DeLoss Dodds just released the following statement: “Major Applewhite engaged in inappropriate, consensual behavior with an adult student one time during the 2009 Fiesta Bowl activities. After learning of his behavior later that month, I took immediate action to review the situation. We promptly initiated an inquiry with assistance from the university’s Legal Affairs office and other units outside of Athletics. Major admitted his inappropriate conduct and he was disciplined. In determining appropriate discipline, we analyze the facts and circumstances surrounding the behavior and its relation to job responsibilities. Major fully accepted his discipline, including counseling. We have high standards for behavior and expect our staff and coaches to adhere to them in all aspects of their lives. I believe that the appropriate discipline was taken in this case.”
Is this tied to the shakedown that UT faced a couple of years ago?

It may be news now because it's being investigated again at Texas and it's possible additional punishment could be imposed on Applewhite. I guess the board of directors or some similar group was never told about this back when it happened. Cooper can probably fill in the details of the current implications.

Because UT's women's track coach was canned (or forced to resign) in January for an "inappropriate relationship" with a student in 2002. And I believe this came up in discovery in her civil case against UT. It isn't great for UT's case. anbosu wrote: I'm not sure - I can't figure out why this is news.

I believe they kept it quiet and in-house. See my post above why this isn't a good thing for UT. NorfolkVaTiger wrote:

anbosu wrote: I'm not sure - I can't figure out why this is news. It's not but DeLoss is probably trying to get out ahead of a legal issue involving our long-time (and very successful) women's track coach who was "forced out" of her job recently after it was learned she had 10 years ago had a similar relationship with an adult student. The cases are somewhat different because the department knew about Major soon after it happened and he complied with the university's policy on such relationships while coach Kearney kept her relationship secret for a decade and did not comply with those policies. Still, our women's athletic director has some legal issues on her hands because of coach Kearney and I think DeLoss is doing everything he can to avoid that headache.

And I believe there was a decent sized sexual harassment case settled with the UT Athletics Department not too long ago as well (not related to either one of these two cases). coopercougar wrote:

Re: Texas athletics director DeLoss Dodds just released the
Prob releasing it as a bit of CYA strategy. TX BOG was probably going to be tipped off and DD realized he better disclose it before that happened in hopes of minimizing BOG's anger. I gotta believe TX BOG is getting really fed up with UT sex scandals - this makes at least 3 in recent yrs. Also possible that the student in question has lawyered up and planned on breaking the news.

Cleve Bryant. He was an associate AD and was fired last two years ago after he sexually harassed a 24 year old. That was a relatively minor case too until the woman hired Gloria Allred to represent her and Allred came in and did her usual three ring circus. The department settled just to get that idiot the hell out of Austin. There are 10,000 lawyers on The University payroll right now praying to God coach Kearney doesn't hire Allred to represent her.

Or is that just an internet rumor?

so a dude in his 20's boned an 'of age' college girl who wasn't being coached, tutored, or supervised by him. Stunning.

I don't see this as any big deal in the eyes of players, recruits or their parents. Now UT may have a delicate situation to be consistent in its moral ethics as mentioned in other posts.

Texas should be stripped of that bowl win, 1 year bowl ban and scholly reducts. I mean after all sleeping with a women gives you just as much of a competitive advantage as free tats.

He cheated on her with a 4... and I'm being generous. Particularly disturbing since Major has a reputation as a stellar recruiter.
