OHIO "THE CRADLE OF COACHING"

Proof that the best football is taught and played in THE OHIO!

Can any other state claim that they have had two native born head coaches match up against each other in the BCS National Championship Game?

Jim Tressel (Mentor, OH) Vs. Urban Meyer (Ashtabula, OH)

Can any other state claim that they have had two native born head coaches match up against each other in the Super Bowl?

Jim Harbaugh (Toledo, OH)  Vs. John Harbaugh (Toledo, OH)

The Harbaughs were born in Toledo but John graduated from Ann Arbor Pioneer HS, Jim Palo Alto CA HS. And the latter obviously did not play his CFB in Ohio.

Re: OHIO "THE CRADLE OF COACHING"

It's not my list. I copied and pasted from an Akron site.  I was only looking at the men listed, not where they are now.

They solidify the notion that Ohio is the cradle of coaches, nothing more.

RE: OHIO "THE CRADLE OF COACHING"

Now that all the coaches are in place for Div.1A;

Ohio has the most with 14 for sure and maybe 15; not sure about New Mexico State's  new coach (Doug Martin) he coached at Kent State , but went to Kentucky . That’s still around 12% out of 125. Plus there are four more who are Ohio educated as far as colleges.

Next in line California : 9

Four states with 7, Oklahoma , NY, Penn. & Texas

If not for either Ohio born or Ohio educated, Lucky fen’ State would not have a national Championship to their name!! Just had to get that in!!

Well that was because of their dad (Jack) who was born in Crestline and attended college/played football at BGSU for Doyt Perry.  Jack started out at Perrysburg HS ('Burb of Toledo) as an assistant coach for a few years which by the way Jim Leyland was attending/playing at the same time and Jerry Glanville had just graduated.  And we know what those guys did (and continue to do) in their careers.

Then it was move after move after move for Jack and his family to different coaching jobs and of course the kids gotta go where dad works and that just happened to be at M*ch*g*n and Standford where Jim and John graduated from nearby high schools respectively.  The branch isn't that far both Harbaughs being from Ohio.

Many examples of Ohio born or had coached/played in Ohio at one time or another.

Other BcS games not mentioned:  Tressel & Coker (assist coach @ Ohio State), Stoops & Saban (played/assist coach at Kent St, assist coach @ Ohio State, HC @ Toledo), Carroll (assist coach @ Ohio State) & Stoops, Miles & Saban and finally Saban & Kelly (HC @ UC).

SB games:   SB III:  Don Shula & Weeb Ewbank (played and coached @ Miami University, started his coaching career @ Van Wert HS in west-central Ohio), SB V:  Don McCafferty (from Cleveland and played for Paul Brown @ Ohio State), SB VI & VII:  Don Shula, SB IX, X, XIII & XIV:  Chuck Noll (born in Cleveland, played @ Dayton), SB XXXV:  Brian Billick (born in Fairborn), SB XXXVII:  Jon Gruden (born in Sandusky, played @ Dayton), SB XLI:  Lovie Smith (Assist Coach @ Ohio State), SB XLII:  Mike Tomlin (assist coach @ UC), SB XLIV:  Sean Payton (assist coach @ Miami Univ).

Gillman was born in Minnesota, he did play at OSU but I don't know where he grew up.

I guess gillman was a coach at Miami, and that's why he was included in their cradle, Oddly Pete Carroll coached at OSU for a bit as a secondary coordinator.

Re: OHIO "THE CRADLE OF COACHING"

Isn't Dantonio from Zanesville-or is that Mark Snyder?

Mel Tucker will be an NFL HC one of these days

Best DC ever-even though I hate the Steelers-Dick LeBeau-London/tOSU

Jason Garrett-Cowboys HC-Huntington Valley

If we want to count NC winning-note I didn't say great -or good-coaches, Larry Coker coached at tOSU for a year or two........

There's a certain kind of reassuring white rock....and some people do well with that.....

Yup... bottom line, if it weren't for HC Francis Schmidt asking Sid to come back to Ohio State to help him out with spring ball, Sid was destined to become a lawyer.  Sid mentions in his book about Francis Schmidt "one of the greatest minds of anybody that I’ve ever known".  So it began back in 1938.

As an FYI, pretty good book about Sid Gillman called "Sid Gillman:  Father of the Passing Game".  Some good photos including him reaching for a pass at The Shoe against M*ch*g*n in 1932.
