Re: Most Important Plays in Ohio State History
I would probably tend to leave it off the list because I tend to interpret important as being a catalyst to something great happening as a result. The Schlichter INT was no question one of the most ignominious plays in OSU history because it led to Woody punching Charlie Baumann. The Springs slips play would also rank up there as ignominious but not necessarily important. Of course, this topic is subject to interpretation and you could view things different ways. Case in point, you could argue that Wes Fesler's decision to punt right before half time of the 1950 Snow Bowl game with OSU leading 3-2 was important because it led to a blocked punt and MICH TD which ultimately cost OSU the game 9-3 and also cost Fessler his job as he was fired after that season. As a result of that bad decision, Woody Hayes would be hired to replace Fessler and the rest is history. PapaJoesBucket wrote:

Re: Most Important Plays in Ohio State History
i wasn't alive, but i get pretty pumped when i see replays of the '75 OSU-UM game and Ray Griffin's late INT that helped cap off a great comeback. not sure of the exact number but i know UM had an impressive unbeaten streak going on their home field until that game (and the fact that OSU didn't pick up a first down in the 2nd or 3rd quarters--not sure if fact)
many good answers in this thread as well. especially love the Fesler decision to punt that led to a block that led to Fesler's firing that led to WW Hayes. kind of scary to think one decision could have such an effect.
would love to hear more about moments like these and others pre-'86.

Yeah, I didn't follow instructions. It was a down year. The kick was not significant or meaningful except... it was a great kick.

BuckeyeDaJuiceMan wrote: Ryan Hamby against Texas In fairness to Ryan Hamby, his recovery of Michael Jenkins fumble in the 1st half of the '02 MICH game was one of the most underappreciated plays of that season. Clarett would go on to score a TD on that drive. If MICH recovers that fumble, its conceivable that OSU loses that game.

So my question to you is: "what are the three most important plays in Ohio State football history?" Arguing with a M*ch*g*n fan at the Rustic after drinking several beers is never a good thing. Go BUCKS!!! OHIO STATE in '13!!!

Re: Most Important Plays in Ohio State History
this has to be one of my all-time favorite threads...I can't help but smile reading & remembering...and I was sure glad I am not the only one who remembered Hop Cassady's interception in 1954 vs Wisconsin...to me, that is why they wrote the song " This could be the start of something BIG "....all the plays are great....love reading about them...thanks for contributing...

RE: Most Important Plays in Ohio State History
Thanks osulmb, this has been a great thread. I could come up with plenty of more plays if I had enough time. A few more that come to mind and have may have already been mentioned: 1. Mike Lantry's missed FG in '74 MICH game; 2. Offside penalty on missed PAT which allowed OSU to re-kick and tie '49 MICH game and send OSU to Rose Bowl; 3. Joe Hague's game-winning FG in '50 Rose Bowl; 4. Jerry Harkrader's game-clinching TD in '55 Rose Bowl; 5. Bob White's game-winning TD in '57 Iowa game; 6. Devin Barclay's game-winning FG in OT in '09 Iowa game; 7. Mike Lanese's acrobatic catch in '84 MICH game; 8. Ray Griffin's INT in '75 MICH game; 9. Archie Griffin's. spectacular game-clinching TD vs. USC in '74 Rose Bowl; 10. Keith Byars spectacular 67 yard TD run with one shoe in '84 ILL game That's all I got for now. Enjoy the memories!! --------------------------------------------- --- osulmb wrote: cincifred wrote: Great Subject:

Beanie Wells' long TD run against #2 Michigan in his freshman year. Set the tone for that game and his career. I could watch that play over and over.

"4. Hop Cassidy's INT and 88 yard TD return in '54 Wisconsin game."
I was there for that one. Great play. Great timing too, WI was moving for a TD that would possibly have put the game out of reach. Hop's play broke their backs to boot. I never saw a team just give up like that, before or since.
Another great Hop play(s) - his punt retuns in the at MI of game around the same time. Hop made a fool of MI's geat DE (can't remember his name) - beat him like a drum. I was there too. Anothe interesting play in that game, an Ohio State FA attempt hit the crossbar - and then bounced over! Really Pd Off MI fans. :-)

I keep thinking about the cooper years. Springs slipping. And the one that really sticks out is the big cat hitting that Mizo qb, smith I think his name was. I also remember that hit vin nice Clark put on that auburn rb.
I know these are not all time plays, .......but for the cooper years they were big considering we were always the bridesmaid.

Kenny Guiton comeback and win. either the purdue penalty or the 2 point conversion to tie, 1.) OSU came back to preserve a perfect season. 2.) did it with a backup qb

Re: Most Important Plays in Ohio State History
Too many great plays over my lifetime to mention them all. Lots of great plays just in the National Championship season. Holy Buckeye, was the most important of the regular season. Many important plays in the championship game itself. I don't think anybody mentioned the 4th and goal play, at the Miami one yardline, and Cie Grant pressured Dorsey to make a bad pass to end the game.
