you are right a far out Idea doesn't mean that it is a bad idea.  But a bad Idea makes a bad Idea.  Which I'm sorry to say the original post is a pretty bad idea. come on there is no way NFL will ever go to regional drafting.  But hey were discussing it. Isn't that what matters?

I'm sure people used to mock others at the thought of flight, and this idea is much less off the deep end.

As for the OP, I happen to like it but obviously there are flaws as w/any drastic change in scene.

Why it makes sense:

1) NCAA football is no longer amateur at these levels anyway -so make it official and structure it as the NFL's farm system.

2) Obama's recent comment about college players and concussions make total sense.  They need to be compensated in some form because of the huge risks they take, risks that make universities millions.

3) This would definitely make the NFL more interesting from the common fan's POV -as it was before free agency.  I know as a Brown's fan, it would be fun to see all Ohio kids on the team vs Pittsburgh, w/all PA kids.  Having career players on a team would take some of the corporate taste out of the game; and obviously add a sense of loyalty to teams -the way it used to be.

Obstacles:

1) Obviously some NFL cities would be getting shafted in the draft like Boston and NYC.  I don't think they'll enjoy drafting out of Cuse and Boston College. Others like Seattle, Arizona, St Louis, Chicago and Detroit might struggle.

2) Would the NFL and the NCAA ever consider such a thing?  Probably never, but stranger things in world history have happened.

That said, I like the idea.  The NFL should do something totally new anyway.

Concussions is the issue.  What other sport exposes someone to frequent concussions? Hockey comes the closest, but it's still nowhere near football. They aren't routinely slamming their heads into each other. In football it happens in practice and games.

Also, in football you have 82 scholarships players, while in other sports you usually only have around a dozen.  Probably around 90% (conservative estimate,) of concussions in college athletics occur in football.

note: I wasn't intending to make this a political debate.  Whether you voted for Obama or not, I would think this is a bipartisan issue.

Obama comments would open up a can of worms the size of the Atlantic Ocean. Could you imagine ?Why only the football players  What about the other sports hockey BB gymnastics ETC. I see a line of law firms just licking their chops for some of that action.

ok, so if it's a bad idea, let's contribute and articulate why it's a bad idea.  yes, i think we can all agree it is unlikely to happen, so that wasn't the point of the entire thread.

Wow...you really need to go read the history around the Curt Flood fight for free agency in MLB, in particular, the case Flood v. Kuhn (407 U.S. 258), to see why the Supreme Court would strike down your plan for the NFL the first time someone challenged it.
