We are very fortunate to have Gene Smith.
It's too bad so many of our fans judge his body of work only by what they see on TV, most of it related to tatgate. All he did was defend your program from petty bs, such as discounted tattoos. Did you want him to agree w/most of the glib sports media, and concede that OSU deserved close to the death penalty over pawning rings and free tats? Did you want him to agree w/uneducated walmart Michigan fans, that OSU systematically cheats, and it's a huge organized conspiracy that starts at the top?
What Smith has done for the OSU athletic program in regards to the dept's finances, student athletes -specifically the academic resources he has created, has been innovative, and done nothing but benefit OSU.
OSU's Athletic Dept is totally self-supporting; and it's because of Gene Smith, that the AD has transferred around $30 mil to the University in his seven years. How many other programs can say that? I'm guessing not most.
Bottom line, the man is highly successful, he is a brilliant business mind (2010 Sport Business Journal Athletic Director of the Year,) and is a graduate of Notre Dame, so maybe some of you should not be showing such disrespect.

He looked unprofessional and even uneducated at times for a $1M/year AD of a major institution. 2) I don't fault him for not expecting the bowl ban. Nobody expected the bowl ban. 3) I don't give Smith credit for the reason the department makes so much money. It's a cash cow he simply asked to maintain. 4) While Smith takes credit for the pursuit and hiring of Urban Meyer, most people know that the board circumvented Smith and went after Meyer on their own.

Re: We are very fortunate to have Gene Smith.
IMO,the harsh reality that many OSU fans have a hard time getting past is that Smith may very well have cost OSU a shot at the BCSCG this year and the millions that go with it.
If Smith already knew he had a good shot at Myer(as many do), then his Gator Bowl move was very puzzling. You would think a mediocre year with an interim coach would be the perfect time to accept a ban. He can't say it was for the Seniors, because any year is bad for the Seniors, like this year. Actually, this year is even worse.
Sure hindsight is 20/20 and everybody makes mistakes, but Smith's was HUGE.

RE: We are very fortunate to have Gene Smith.
Most of the good you credit Smith with was the doing of Geiger. Gene Smith has just been a caretaker all these years. Geiger was the one to make all the capital improvements, hire incredible head coaches, and actually stand up to the media like you attempt to credit the fool Gene Smith with. Gene Smiths gets hired and just mops up the glory of his predecessor's brilliant decisions.

HokeIsFat wrote: never will be forgiven for not self imposing Gator Bowl ban. That move set MSU football back by at least five years. Maybe that was Smith's goal (just kidding). As you probably know, a Gator Bowl ban would have removed OSU from the Big Ten title share, and so MSU and Wisconsin would have then split the title and then the tiebreaker would have worked differently with two instead of three teams involved. That would have put the Spartans in the Rose Bowl because MSU beat Wisconsin in the head to head game. A Rose Bowl appearance would have hugely helped MSU recruiting, and certainly wouldn't have helped Michigan's recruiting. So yeah, I too will never forgive Smith for that move!

Hindsight is 20/20. There was no precedent Smith could have pointed to, to justify a self imposed bowl ban AT THAT TIME. Yeah i'm of the belief that Geiger set things up well. Smith's decisions have been baffling to say the least, especially the Gator Bowl where the wrongdoers get to benefit but guys this year who had nothing to do with any of that got punished instead

Gene Smith belongs at Notre Dame. In South Bend they killed a practice recorder by putting him up there during windy conditions, the football players raped women and one ended up committing suicide, and now the Manti Teo debacle. Smith and his dirtiness belongs there!

hmmm let me think about that for a second. ok, done. i've decided to stay, but thanks for the offer, because for every ten mongoloids on a message board, (such as yourself,) Ohio State and Hineygate deserve better. Also, you should go ahead and do society a favor and castrate yourself to save the gene pool (and the OSU fanbase,) from any future double digit IQ babies. lol thinking Smith threw Tressel under the bus. +1 I've talked to credible people with firsthand knowledge. Smith knew about Tatgate/Pryor and had Tressel keep his mouth shut. JT took the fall and was the patsy. Why Smith is still employed at this University is beyond me....and alarming. OgdenBuckeye wrote: WORST POST EVER! LEAVE!

Re: We are very fortunate to have Gene Smith.
It's funny that some think Gene is clean. He saved his own behind and tried to lessen the penalties towards our university by making Tress the scapegoat. Those in the know understand this. It's just not talked about obviously unless it's behind closed doors. The individual who started this thread needs to wake up. He or she must be Gene's wife or relative. He's trolling no matter who he or she is. tOSUinPHX wrote: +1

Sure you have. You've talked to people w/firsthand knowledge, but offer no logical reasons or facts to backup your fantasy, then give a "+1" to such a credible poster. Try enrolling in a junior college, and go from there. It beats posting fantasies and pretending to be in the know, on the internet. tOSUinPHX wrote: +1

Re: We are very fortunate to have Gene Smith.
Gene Smith hired Tom Ryan, the new wrestling coach. That looks like a great hire. He also hired Greg Beals, the new baseball coach, and Mark Osiecki, the new hockey coach. Either of those might turn out to be great hires but they haven't made the immediate positive impact that Ryan did. The jury's still out on them. Jim Foster needs to be replaced. Will Gene have the stones to make a change? I'm afraid he won't but time will tell.
Gene Smith helped improve the student seating at the Schott for basketball games. That was a positive.
Other than that, what good has he done? Don't give me the hiring of Urban Meyer because anyone would have done that. He's from Ohio, has a degree from OSU, coached at OSU, loves Woody, and Earle is his mentor. All it took was a phone call.
Gene renegotiated the contract for the new basketball practice facility after the financial crisis hit, ostensibly to get a more favorable deal. That project is currently behind schedule and over budget. That sort of thing never happened under Geiger. The new basketball court was supposed to be ready by the start of the season but it was late too. Then there was the ill-conceived Carrier Classic game that was canceled because, lo and behold, it gets cool on the ocean off the coast of South Carolina during night time in November. Who knew (other than most everybody not named Gene Smith)? OSU doesn't have a single B1G basketball game scheduled at home on a Saturday this season. And scheduling Kansas for an afternoon game during bowl season while the students were home on break wasn't the brightest idea in the world.
Gene stood idly by while Barry Alvarez got OSU and Michigan placed in separate divisions in the new B1G. That's a capital offense, imo. Nobody benefited more from the divisional alignments than Wisconsin and MSU. Not coincidentally, Alvarez and Hollis are probably the two best AD's in the conference. There's also that little matter of not self-imposing a bowl ban in 2011. Gene used to be on the NCAA Infractions Committee so he should have known better yet he completely blew that call. That's inexcusable.
Remember when Geiger made changes to the compliance program after the Maurice Clarett fiasco? The goal was to take the responsibility for policing his players away from Jim Tressel. Then Gene came in and put Doug Archie in charge of compliance. It was big news when Pryor got that new Block O tattoo. We all thought that was really cool. Someone from compliance should have spoken to Pryor to find out where he got it and how he paid for it. Tatgate could have been avoided if compliance did their job. But they didn't, OSU was wracked by a new scandal, and Doug Archie still has his job. That's also inexcusable.
Andy Geiger did all the heavy lifting at OSU. All Gene had to do was keep the ship sailing in a straight line and, imo, he has failed to do so. If the athletic dept. finances are so strong, why are we looking at the greatest increase in ticket prices in OSU history? Why didn't anyone at Arizona State care when OSU hired Smith away from Tempe?
With the new playoffs coming up, OSU needs new leadership in the athletic dept. Unfortunately, that will probably require a change in the office of university president who introduced Gene as "the best athletic director in the country" at the president's breakfast prior to the Michigan game. We're probably stuck with him, but it's long past time for Gene to go.

If you follow logic that OSU and UM are 1/2, then putting them in the same division makes every season a cakewalk for Wisky Nobody benefited more from the divisional alignments than Wisconsin and MSU. Not coincidentally, Alvarez and Hollis are probably the two best AD's in the conference. There's also that little matter of not self-imposing a bowl ban in 2011.
