Admittedly, I have never read anything he has written for his newspaper columns, so I don't know the quality or content of those writings. I just see a lot of folks with a lot of venom and hate directed towards him, which is surprising based on his writings I have read.
I guess my perspective is that there are plenty of people that are not highly educated, that need important life lessons woven at a somewhat simplistic reading level. In my opinion, it's much better than half the trash splattered on television and the magazines that fill the shelves.

No hatred, but a bit of bewilderment regarding a "let's just stick to sports" message coming from Albom. Doesn't seem to be advice that he follows.

There is that making up facts thing a few years ago too. I actually used to like him, but his time on the reporters and the lie turned me.

RE: manti teo
LANCASTER, Calif. -- The person cast as the mastermind of the hoax involving Notre Dame's Manti Te'o may tell his side of the story, a family member said Sunday. Peter Navy Tuiasosopo, uncle of Ronaiah Tuiasosopo, says the family plans to hold a meeting this week to determine when and how his nephew would talk about the bizarre prank.
"We want to do it right," he said, also noting that the family has hired an attorney. He never directly mentioned the hoax or his nephew being involved.
More on Manti Te'o
Te'o insisted he had no role in the hoax involving his "dead" girlfriend and told ESPN on Friday night that he was duped by a person who has since apologized to him.
In an off-camera interview, Te'o identified that person as Ronaiah Tuiasosopo, a 22-year-old acquaintance who lives in California. He said the young man contacted him soon after Deadpsin.com broke the news on Wednesday. The Deadspin story indicated Ronaiah Tuiasosopo was involved, and suggested Te'o was, too.
"We're just a family of faith. The family is holding up well," Peter Navy Tuiasosopo said. "They're holding up the way I would expect a family to. This is a storm."
He made the comments after attending a two-hour service at the Oasis Christian Church, where his brother, who is Ronaiah's father, is pastor.
Titus Tuiasosopo, the father, choked up as he thanked people for their prayers.
"I've been practicing how to say `no comment' in 20 languages," the pastor told his congregation. The family has not commented publicly since news of the hoax broke.
Ronaiah Tuiasosopo wasn't seen in attendance, and two church members said he was not there.
Earlier in the day, ABC news announced that Te'o would do his first television interview with Katie Couric. The interview will air Thursday on Couric's daytime talk show and Te'o's parents will be with him. ABC was not releasing details of when the interview would take place or where.
Also, in a story published in Sunday's South Bend Tribune, a Notre Dame spokesman said the university decided against disclosing the hoax before the Irish played Alabama in the BCS championship game on Jan. 7 because it wasn't in the best interest of the teams.
University spokesman Dennis Brown said some school administrators thought they should release what they knew about the hoax when they became aware of it. Te'o went to coaches and school officials with his story on Dec. 26. The school commissioned an investigation that it says confirmed Te'o was not involved. Investigators gave their findings to the school on Jan. 4.
The university officials said the investigators did not examine cellphone records, emails or other electronic communication to determine the length or extent of Te'o's communication over the past few years with the person claiming to be Lennay Kekua, nor did the university ask Te'o to take a lie detector test.
The school informed Te'o's parents about the investigation results on Jan. 5

If you need to get life advice from Mitch Albom's shitty books then you're already a lost cause.

Sorry, maybe I don't see people with lesser education and less advantages in life as lost causes. I think there are plenty of people that dig their own holes because of poor choices or laziness, but there are also people that are born into horrible situations. I have a capitalist mentality naturally and by education, but my views have changed a bit the last few years after starting to volunteer with some local Cleveland organizations. Some people just need hope and if Albom is able to provide that to some folks, then I say write on. To write people off as lost causes just isn't a worldview I'd like to adopt. To each his own.

I was the 'victim' of a similar attempt to illicit emotional attachments and responses over the internet.
They're actually quite good at what they do. Now, are they just attention starved, mentally ill women who will stoop to any level for male attention? or are they trying to steal your identity? It's hard to say, since they are so good at what they do, it almost seems professional... the fact that more than one person is typically involved suggests non-crazy women...
Let's see, the one after me lived 1) really far away 2) really attractive 3) chronic illness 4) died........ but amazingly made it to the hospital and lived!! It was really quite elaborate. It was so comical I started screwing with "them"... warning: they either can't take it cause they're so mentally nuts OR they know you're on to them and then you're dealing with criminals in deep who WILL attempt to intimidate you....
either way, I let the "fun" go on too long and ended up really pissing them off in some capacity... the "girl" mentioned her chronic heart trouble to which I replied "you ain't sick, b!atch"... i was tired of the nonsense and thought they'd be done with their game...
they found out where I worked with a google search.. emailed my direct supervisor and my boss' supervisor saying I was threatening and harrassing them using company resources.. what a lovely visit from internal audit... explaining all that...... they would do other things.. I actually broke things off with a girl I was dating at the time because I did wonder if they had someone local and I didn't want to bring her into it.. it was just weird.
I still get "unknown number" calls to my office phone every now and then...... so, when Teo does say he was a victim, I can identify.. especially if he really was duped, it would be an extremely embarrassing them to let out... you kinda want it to just go away.. crazies or thieves...
I was leaning towards phishing scam until another fatty impersonating a hot woman attempted to chat me up... given my previous experience, i was ready to investigate.. got some friends in the right places... so maybe it is just fat girls wanting attention from men they don't have a chance of outkicking their coverage with.. who knows... they're damn scary though - vindictive.
edit: I will say, after reading about the "tactics" used, this is a system.. girl with chronic illness etc.. the one after me would say things like "my past boyfriend, i knew everything, SSN, bank account numbers.. I used to buy him things and send him money".. it was sublte.. trying to create a trust.. never asking for the information.. it's like there i a phishing scam/identity theft book out there that these people are reading...
luckily I never divulged anything but my name and my address which is all easily obtained anyway.. but a lesser savvy person.. like a lonely man in his 50s or something.. idk.. it has to work and translate into $$$ or they wouldn't do it.

Re: manti teo
Teo hasnt even answered questions about what really happened in any interview to date. His stories are becoming filled with more and more lies every time he opens his mouth. Of course idiots like jeremy schaap are too stupid to put 2 and 2 together to call him out on the inconsistencies and highly improbable events that he claims happened.
This tuassiopo character looks like will take the fall as the mastermind and end all be all in the story. This guy most likely took money from higher ups affiliated with ND or ESPiN to be that guy. We will probably never know the whole truth, but this much is clear. Teo lied and lied repeatedly to hide something he didnt want getting out,, and ESPiN and ND were complicit in the coverup

Re: manti teo
Manti is apparently one of those "look at me, arent' I great?" type guys. True story: Two years ago on the Friday before the Stanford game at ND Manti comes through the crowd with his sportcoat slung over his shoulder and an entourage and with people in the crowd saying Manti, manti!" He is supposedly on his way to/from a team meeting. Well ten minutes later here he comes from the same direction, doing the same thing, soaking up the addoration. And then he repeats this whole thing about another ten minutes later. Someone mentioned previously that he likes to point himself out when he is watching TV so this would support that narcissitic personalitly. My point? There would be every reason based on his personality to play this thing up to the max to draw attention to himself, regardless of whether he was set up or not. I could see him continuing it even after he knew it was all bogus just to soak up some more air time.

Re: manti teo
stranded there are a lot more lonely/disturbed/whatever folks out there than people realize.
about 5-6 years ago a friend of mine decided to pull a prank and join a lesbian chat/site.
he got a picture of a pretty cute girl...not a knockout but cute, and posted it as his on the site.
he had no intention of trying to scam anybody he just thought it would be funny to see what some of the girls used as flirting/pick up lines ect.
within a week he had HUNDREDS of girls mailing naked pictures of themselves to him and several offering to send him money to fly out where they lived.
he stopped and didnt take any money or anything from anybody but it was amazing how many people voluntarily fell for someone they had never even met.
there are a lot of lonely, miserable folks out there.
