Don't show your ignorance, lardbelly. He's in about every football hall of fame there is. Since you obviously never saw him play, maybe you shouldn't comment.
Moon River, this is confusing...some people  on the " HOF " post under us said he wasn't in the HOF...I don't know that much about it, but if he isn't I just wondered why?tongue

Re: Two freshmen may start at LB

Is Curtis Grant totally out of the picture? I was just looking through some recruiting rankings - he was ranked as the #19 overall prospect on Scout and the #2 - #2!!! - overall prospect on TOS as a high school senior.

Any chance that he breaks through and we see some of that potential? At the very least, could his career mirror Etienne Sabino's career?

Curtis Grant is now a DE and I'm pretty sure Crowell transferred out. I think the LBs are Shazier, Perry, and Marcus.

RE: Two freshmen may start at LB

Ill be disappointed to see freshmen start at the linebacker positions. How can we expect 18 year olds to play this position at the capacity a starter needs to play. Their responsibilities line them up against some of the most physical of offensive players. Its one thing to be a freshman pass rush DE. Its an entirely different ballgame to play MIKE and fill the A gaps for 60 minutes.

The linebackers need to be our experienced guys. Guys who have been developing in college programs for at least one full year. Im pulling for guys like Curtis Grant (someone said hes a DE now?? I had not heard that at all, would have figured there may be a little more discussion about that on the board if not its own thread even. entirely possible i missed it though)

Perkins Marcus and Williams need to be the guys we count on at the second level of this defense.

Let the black stripes show their stuff on kickoff and mop up duty.

Re: Two freshmen may start at LB

I agree with this statement.  I think Mitchell and Trey will contribute on special teams and be reserve lbs this year.  We had a good crop of lb prospects in the 2012 class that I think will get the first crack at the 2 open spots.  Perry is the most likely candidate to take the OLB spot.  MLB???  Hopefully there will be an intense competition for this spot in the spring and someone will finally emerge as a competent player in this crucial position.

Too many timesae get guys and people want them to start from day one and call them a bust if it takes a couple years to see the field. Great high school players don't always make great college players. I do have high hopes for our two incoming players though. We defiantly need the to produce and learn the system a little quicker than Sabino and Grant (still a maybe).
+1.  It seems we see some of this every year - where some people anoint guys just coming in as likely starters, probably based on their recruiting rankings.  Sometimes true frosh do contribute or even start, of course, but that's more the exception than the rule.

It's interesting that the players the new guys are supposedly going to jump ahead of were the new guys themselves a couple years back - and some probably then thought they were going to come in and start early, too.....

Re: Two freshmen may start at LB

i think you need to get a guy like mitchell on the field to get thier feet wet. i think he would be a huge asset defending the middle in passing situations or against overmanned teams who toss the ball around.  The type of game that is played in this day and age will make it easier to utilize a guy like him if he can get by on his instintcs. I would have huge reservations about playing a youngster against a run oriented physical team where he may get lost on play action may get trucked in the hole or may not have the man strenght to hold up all year. we just wont see to omany of those kinds of teams next year.

It really would not suprise me to see mitchell red shirted. in 2 years he and his kid brother just might ink thier names into OHIo State history books and thier memories into the minds of many as ledgends.

RE: Two freshmen may start at LB

I could be wrong but the only freshman linebacker that has come in and started from day one is Andy Katzenmoyer. The transition from being a huge fish in the high school pond and playing football at tOSU is bigger than most on these boards can comprehend. I am sure that some of the freshman may see the field and contribute but to start and hold your own is highly unlikely. To play for the Buckeye defense you not only have to be athletic but understand you assignments and to perform them without hesitation. If you hesitate you will play slow and if you freelance you will leave a hole in the scheme that you are a part of. Either way the defense is going to fail.

RE: Two freshmen may start at LB

85% of the time we are in a 4-2-5.
Shazier is a LOCK to start.
My bet is on Perry to start the other position.
Players like : C. Williams, J. Marcus and Perkins will be competing to be the other starter in a 4-3 defense.

Mitchell will play this season in cleanup duty as COULD T. Johnson. Keep in mind, how little the backup players played this past season for us... very little.

Totally agree in the first half of the season - the DL is so young...  Too many people forget Katzenmoyer had seniors Fickell, Vrabel and Finkes in front of him on the d-line when he was a freshman.

the league is full of studs and freaks we need football players and that takes time
i predict great things from this guy and cant wait to see him as a senior but i wont hold my breath on any frosh middle linebackers playing full time.

bamabrutus wrote: I think Perry might outgrow linebacker and become a VIPER/LEO.  You could tell he was getting better game after game. I think with 10-15 pounds of muscle this kid will be killin it this spring.

Shazier played like a 1st team AA the last 4-5 games.  I think the year of strength training will help these guys.

I don't know whats up with Grant and Crowell...both might wash out if they do not get it. We will know more by the spring game.

I think MLB is a vopid that need to be filled. Our schedule is great for a young defense. Our offense is gonna put up around 45 PPG...We need our defense to be solid not great to start the season. I want them peaking late.
Crowell is no longer a part of the team.  Medically done with football.    Grant has switched positions and is now a rush end.

None of these true freshmen are starting and if you think otherwise you have a screw loose.  We have guys ahead of them that were studs in the previous class who have tons of talent...

And Katzenmoyer was a complete freak of nature. He wasn't just a really good recruit.
