Report: Browns wiff on Chip Kelly. Back to square one

Sources: No Chip Kelly for Browns

Updated: January 6, 2013, 2:27 PM ET
By Chris Mortensen/ESPN

The Cleveland Browns have decided to reboot their coach search after leaving Arizona late Sunday morning without landing Oregon's Chip Kelly, according to league sources.

Browns owner Jimmy Haslam III will renew the search at "square one" once his executive contingent, including CEO Joe Banner is stationed back in Cleveland after interviewing eight candidates in Arizona.

Kelly and Syracuse coach Doug Marrone emerged as the leading candidates but Marrone reached an agreement to become the next coach of the Buffalo Bills.

The Philadelphia Eagles are the only other NFL team known to have interviewed Kelly. League sources believe the chances of Kelly returning to Oregon were significant with a decision expected Sunday.

The Philadelphia Eagles took their coaching search committee to Denver to interview Broncos offensive coordinator Mike McCoy on Sunday after a lengthy meeting with Kelly on Saturday night in Arizona.

Kelly has built the Ducks into a national power. Oregon has gone 46-7 in the last four years and made four consecutive BCS bowl games. Kelly run's a high-octane, fast-breaking offense, and elements of his schemes are already being used by New England and Washington.

If he returns to the Eugene, Ore., campus, Kelly may be facing NCAA sanctions as the school is being investigated for recruiting violations.

Haslam and Banner had been in Arizona since firing Pat Shurmur last week. Shurmur went 9-23 in two seasons with Cleveland, which is seeking its sixth full-time coach since 1999.

Re: Report: Browns wiff on Chip Kelly. Back to square one

If it does not happen, I will not be sad.  I think Kelly is a risk.  Absolutely no NFL experience, and the Browns do not need that right now.  The Browns need a guy with good NFL experience, preferably some head coaching.  Ken Whisenhunt (who is a very good coach and had a lot of success with a BAD Arizone Cardinals organization, plus played and has coached several positions, been an OC with some good teams on top of his ups and downs in Arizona).  Lovie Smith from Chicago is a hard-nose players coach, not the aloof, smug buffon Shurmur was (a hire very similar to the original coach, Chris Palmer, who had never been anything other than a QB coach and suddenly was made HC of a new franchise).

The guys who have success going from college to pros are guys who played and coached in the pros, then went down to college, then came back up after gaining good experiences (like Harbaugh, Pete Carroll, etc).  Guys like Spurrier (who did play in the pros, but coached only in college... well, the USFL, too) don't have the NFL experience enough to know what they are really getting into.

The change of ownership is a long-needed godsend, and Cleveland needs to avoid the desire to hire another "celebrated assistant" (Palmer, Shurmur, Crennel, Mangini, - who also was mediocre with the Jets as HC), and get a guy with a good track record in the NFL.

Agree completely. Chip Kelly is a good college coach but I'm not sold on him leading an NFL team and don't get why a few franchises seem to be salivating over him...use concepts from his offense - sure, but getting him to run a pro team when he has no experience doing so? No thanks. Either Ken Whisenhunt or Lovie Smith would be great hires...probably the best candidates (besides the reclusive Bill Cowher) the Browns would have looked at since their reincarnation.

The Browns should consider themselves lucky, Kelly cannot beat elite teams and teams with defenses in college.

I think they should look at Lovie Smith or Jack Del Rio.

Lovie Smith is darn good.
Me thinks Pat Haden gets Jack Del Rio to USC after next NLOI signing day, and most of the USC probation is gone.
I would take Mel Tucker over Kelly.  Kelly had a nice run, but most teams with a physical D front and who could run the ball, beat him every time.

Jack Del Rio is safe right now.  I like Lovie and would not complain, though Defensive coaches tend to be too conservative on offense.  I want an offensive-minded head coach who likes to attack on D (Whisenhunt)- he did well in Arizona until the ownership and GM forced him to use some crappy QBs and would not sign talent.  Browns ownership is going to spend some money.

I'm relieved. We don't need to roll the dice right now on an unproven commodity like Kelly. My confidence in the Browns leadership is actually growing for the first time ever.

Your confidence is high because Chip Kelly turned down the Browns? He was offered the job.

The warm breeze of September optimism in Ann Arbor, is once again replaced with the cool October wind of reality.

Am I the only one that is puzzled by the buzz about Kelly by NFL teams?

Then again, the Bills just hired Syracuse's coach, who I've never heard of.

I agree with Lovie Smith as the best candidate available.

Wonder how they whiffed? Not enough money or control?

Also, maybe Kelly does not feel the Ducks will get hit very hard by the NCAA.

Marrone was the architect of the current Saints offense.  He was an OL coach in the NFL then OffCo for Saints until the season before they won the Super Bowl.

I agree with Lovie Smith as the best candidate available.
I agree Lovie has the best resume', but some think he may be on the downside now.  He has been reputed to be a hindrance to the offensive staff.  He definitely would bring massive instant impovement.

However, I think Whisenhunt may be the best candidate.  He is credited with having helped shape Pittisburg offense as TE coach then OC until going to the Cardinals.  He turned the Cardinals into a 2-straight division champ and Super Bowl contenders (first time in franchise history).  Several teams went after him, but he signed an extension out of loyalty with the Cardinals instead.  his payment for his loyalty was for Cardinals management to basically refuse to sign key players, release others, and a some poor drafts... several choices against Whisenhunt's desires.

Again, the Cardinals are not a well-run team nor is winning first in their agenda... Whisenhunt had 3 winning seasons, 2 losing, and an 8-8.  His two losing seasons coming in his last 3 years as the Cardinals were unable to find, sign, or draft a good QB.  he actually would have a better QB situation in Cleveland than he has in Arizona.  Not to mention, Richardson is a promising RB, and there is a decent corps of WRs who are young and could use his guidance.  Haslam seems willing to spend money, so some good free agents might be lured (even a Beanie Wells who is going to be released by the Cardinals).  He is also inheriting a fairly respected (by NFL pundits) defense.  Many folks at all levels of the NFL were saying the Browns already have some great young talent on defense.  Lovie would work well with them, for sure, but so would Whisenhunt, and Whisenhunt would work better with the offense.  If he can build a decent winner in Arizona with THAT ownership, he could (subjunctive, I know) do wonders in Cleveland.

Re: Report: Browns wiff on Chip Kelly. Back to square one

I don't share the optimism of many people here about Chip Kelly essentially turning the Browns down. For a franchise rumored to have been told by 3 of the Top 10 picks in the draft last year not to draft them, getting turned down by their top pick coaching candidate is not exactly a good sign.

I am not convinced that Kelly would have been a great or even good coach, but to say that the remaining names on the market are underwhelming is an understatement. Ask people in Chicago how they feel about Lovie Smith. They are no closer to hiring a coach than the Browns, but to a fan they are more than happy to be moving on to someone else. I don't dislike Whisenhunt, but isn't a head coach at least a little responsible for coaching a team without a viable option at QB for the three years since Kurt Warner retired?

People seem to dislike Kelly, but lets face it, there is no such thing as a sure thing when it comes to hiring an NFL head coach. The options appear to be what the Browns have hired in the past as well, retreads or coordinators/assistant coaches looking for their first shot. Hopefully, whoever it is, this will be the time they finally get it right.

No you're not. Oregon isn't exactly a team carved out of an NFL mold. I think there's serious questions about his ability to adapt to the pros, especially when you consider all the great college coaches who've struck out at the next level.

A lot of guys say that, but they can change their minds when the draft day nears and the money gets discussed.

New ownership definitely is an improvement if one knows the Lerner family and their less-than-savvy management.  A lot of guys will look at the success of the defense in many games, the young talent on the OL (2 all-pros) and a great RB and young, budding WR and think they are not too far away.  Bringing in a guy like Kelly that is all publicity and no real meat for the NFL would be a mistake.  Hiring a good coach in the next 2-3 days and show the desire to win now, those guys will come.  Cleveland need not worry about the draft this year, they don't have many choices.  Free agency and a good coaching hire will do more for them.  kelly is not a good hire right now.
