If Coach Meyer had a choice would he choose?

Ohio State or Notre Dame if both spots were open up?

meyer actually made a lot of florida fans mad when he first took the job by saying that notre dame was his dream job but he thought he would have a better chance at a national title at florida.

i think he meant it as a compliment to all the hs talent in florida but UNTIL he won that national title it stuck in some of their craws about him always talking about notre dame.

Re: If Coach Meyer had a choice would he choose?

Former Washington State coach Paul Wulff was interviewed on Seattle radio shortly after he was fired. He told the story about how when he was considering leaving Eastern Washington for Washington State he sought the advice of Coach Meyer, who apparently had gotten to know him while interviewing candidates for his Utah staff.

Coach Meyer told him to carefully look over the roster he would be picking up, and that when he looked at the rosters Ron Zook and Tyrone Willingham left at Florida at Notre Dame respectively, it was a no-brainer choice to go to Florida.

He told Wulff that no high profile coaching position would allow a new coach enough time to turn the roster over before winning, so he'd better be very sure he could win with the players he would inherit before taking the job, and that taking the wrong job, one where he could not step right in and win, was a very poor career move.

So the answer to this question, according to the story Wulff told, would be it would depend mainly on the talent on the rosters at Notre Dame and Ohio State when the choice had to be made. And THAT would depend on the recruiting and developing prowess of the outgoing coaching staff.

That is the main reason no program can allow incompetance at coaching to go on too long, the worse shape a program gets into, the harder it is to get a coach who could fix the problem to take the risk of taking the job.

Wulff brought the story up because he says he could see that he wouldn't be able to win right away at Washington State, but he took the job anyway, because it was his alma mater reaching out to him. He was right, he didn't win there, and was fired by that alma mater. As a result, as Urban warned him, Wulff's formerly rising star coaching career was derailed, perhaps permanently.

He turned ND down once already and he came back for the OSU job after 'retiring.'

He had a four-foot high picture of Woody Hayes in his house in Florida.

He told people when he was at OSU in the 80s he would be the HC there someday.

He grew up in Ohio listening to The Game on the radio in shopping malls.

Anyone can do the math.

Why ask such a dumb question? We all know the truth. Welcome back to Buckeye Nation Urban in your first of many years as our HC, with a 12-0 season. A players coach, a fans coach, and a coaches coach. Nothing but Urban Swag in Columbus, Ohio. A Buckeye fans dream come true. Welcome home.

This topic is not even open to discussion between ND & tOSU, hands down UM is Home in Columbus and this IS his dream coaching job at Ohio State.

RE: If Coach Meyer had a choice would he choose?

lol, he turned ND down to go to UF, so ND is clearly NOT his dream job. Not because of his 1st year roster (lol, I think he considered more than 1 year), but because UF is a better coaching situation than ND (better facilities, better access to talent, more appealing campus to recruits, and not in the middle of Indiana).

He could have had the ND job on two separate occasions if he wanted it. That he's not there should tell you something.

Good, solid post. However, most on here will ignore it, unfortunately. Too factual.

So the point is what?  He didn't like the ND roster which is undefeated as much as the OSU roster which is undefeated?  He's teaching younger coaches how to grow their careers, that is all.

In short, you agree with it, so that makes it "factual," even if other facts would lead people to other conclusions. rolleyes

Because Bowling Green and Utah were stacked rosters when he went to both?

Oh I enjoy the Notre Dame propaganda.

Hey, I really worry about Darrell Hazell at Purdue. Great guy for sure. Did an excellent job at Kent State.  However, I'm not sure (minus the $), if taking the Purdue job was wise for his long-term Head Coaching career.
