Would Woody...

This likely is speculation...not sure if he ever said how he felt to the public...but would Woody root for Michigan in their bowl game ?

My hunch is no way...he despised Mich too much.

GO BUCKS !!!

I think he would root against tsun, but would be pulling for his friend BO. With that being said, he still would want tsun to LOSE!

It wouldn't surprise me at all if Woody would root for Michigan (or at least want them to win), especially when Bo was there. They were really close friends.

Woody would not root for Michigan ever. He and Bo didn't become that close until later in life.

Woody & Bo were friends for decades. I believe, with good reason, that what I said is correct.

Yeah, he'd probably be watching and recording game film and studying this Brady Hoke guy.

Re: Would Woody...

When Woody coached it was Rose Bowl or bust for most of his career, bowlwise, and I am sure he was POed during the 10 year war when scUM went to the Rose Bowl. That said, I suspect he wouldn't care or would root for the league if scUM was in a lesser bowl like they are now. Different era.

Re: Would Woody...

Woody and Bo were good friends, Bo got his start as an asst to Woody.........BUT WOODY NEVER EVEN MENTIONED THAT "school up north" by any other name than that...........You cheapen the rivalry with the mere whisper that Woody WOULD EVER CHEER for those weasels.....he never in public and I would bet the house, he never cheered in private for 'em!!!! You can have respect, which WW did, and I'm sure he was proud of the fact, that it took "one of his own" to compete with him, but after the '69 fiasco, with BO being the 1rst year coach of them scummers, HE EVER CHEERED FOR THEM!!!!!

Having said that, I'm sure he never wished any ill will towards Bo...........

Re: Would Woody...

Difficult to say because although Woody despised Michigan he did take a lot of pride in Big Ten.

Whether his relationship with Bo woukld've been tipping point is conjecture.

Conference wouldn't allow teams other than champion to go bowling until Woody's last four years.

Re: Would Woody...

When Woody was interviewing a young man for a job as personal assistant, or something along those lines, the guy had questions. One of them was about Woody's heavy negative feelings toward Michigan. As I recall, Woody's son was in the room at the time. Woody just looked at his son, and told the fellow "that stuff [about Michigan] is overblown," or words to that effect.

Another time, Bo called Woody in his office, and I'm pretty sure Woody was still HC at the time. They talked for a while, and when they hung up, Woody sat there & looked off into space for a moment and said, "You know, I really love that guy."

Woody wanted to win The Game more than anything in football, especially in later years. But from the accounts I've read - and I read four books on Woody & OSU just a few years back - I wouldn't bet that he would sit at home & cheer for USC or Oklahoma over Michigan. I could be wrong, but that's my guess.

That sounds reasonable to me too.

Wooedy loved OSU then the Big10.  Guaranteed he rooted for any conference team in a bowl game.

Re: Would Woody...

When you read biographies of Woody Hayes you pick up a lot on his love of the Big Ten and he truly believed in the superior football of the Big Ten during the 1950s, 1960s and early 1970s.  I would conclude from this that he would not really root for the school up north but would root for the Big Ten to show well in the national stage.  Therefore, yes he would pull for them in a bowl game.

I on the other hand want to see South Carolina demolish the school up north today!

Re: Would Woody...

tongue   if I had to guess, I think Hayes would watch the game & silently pull for all the Big 10 teams....tongue    Maybe that is because that is what I am doing today, I don't know...tongue
