It's always a matter of numbers and depth. UT can get some very skilled players, but can lack depth.

Can't assess Holgerson on one year.
Jimbo Fisher Mack Brown (was great at one time, not anymore) Tommy Tuberville Steve Sarkisian Frank Beamer (ditto Brown) Brady Hoke Bo Pelini Kirk Ferentz (ditto Brown and Beamer) Dan Mullen Gary Pinkel Randy Edsall Mike London Paul Johnson

Re: Most overrated BCS coach
Over-paid and over-rated are two separate things, so I will do both.
Over-paid = Careful Kirk Ferentz, by a landslide.
Over-rated = Lane Kiffin. Why that guy has ever been a Head Coach in the NFL or the NCAA, is something that will have me scratching my head for decades.

I was shocked when Kiffin went to USC, or rather when USC asked him to come. He seemed to run his mouth a lot and couldn't back it up. I suppose USC may have thought "Hey, we're USC, Kiffin can recruit and we can win no matter what!". Ferentz does reasonably well with what he has I think.

Brady Hoke.
Kind of embarrassed by this board that it took 27 posts before somebody finally posts the correct answer.

And don't say Charlie Weis, because to be overrated you first have to be HIGHLY rated by somebody. I think everyone took this second sentence to heart vis a vis BH.

I've mentioned this before, but it bears repeating: a friend of mine was traveling internationally when I sent out an e-mail to a group of CFB fans including him that USC had hired Kiffin, and he e-mailed back: "I'm traveling. Is this a joke?" He just couldn't believe it.

Re: Most overrated BCS coach
I admit to being happy that USC floundered this season relative to expectations. I like Stanford as a program anyway. Imagine you had a son good enough to get a scholarship to play football at Stanford. Win win.
Tennessee also did not come out well in that exchange (to this point).

Re: Most overrated BCS coach
Mack Brown of Texas is my choice. He won because of his QB and for no other reason. With the talent in Texas there is no reason he is not challanging every year. He may be able to recruit, but he can not coach up that talent or mold that talent into a complete team. Another overrated coach, but a nice guy is Bill Snyder of KSU. He has won because of a QB too and he won before because he never played anyone. These two guys are probably some of the nicest people in college football, but they are not good coaches in my humble opinion.

Mullen has a 58% WP at Mississippi State. You have to go back to the 50's(Darrel Royal) to find a coach with a better WP there. This is his first HC job.

Re: Most overrated BCS coach
Bo Pelini ( Rotten Black Shirts defense. Wow, are they bad on defense or what?)
Kirk Ferentz ( Overpaid and way past his prime) = Rumored to be candidate for the K.C. Chiefs
Lane Kiffen ( Great recruiter, but below average Head Coach)
Les Miles ( no one does less with more)
Marc Reicht ( see the SEC Championship Game for proof )

Re: Most overrated BCS coach
Got to be Kirk Ferentz. He has an overall record of 100-75. , and in 14 years as Iowa coach he has won only 2 shares of a Big 10 title(although he never even won the Big 10 outright), and his teams have slipped over the course of his career, yet he is one of the 5 highest paid CFB coaches and he is always mentioned whenever an NFL job is open. At least according to rumor, he is the Chief's first choice for a new coach right now. He is the very definition of a mediocre coach, yet some people think he's one of the best in college football.
Agree that Lane Kiffin and Bob Stoops are both overrated, although they're not quite as overrated as Ferentz. I think that Les Miles is considered to be so overrated that he's underrated. Mack Brown was overrated a few years ago, but I don't think he is at this point.

I didn't even know Holgorsen was highly ranked. I would disagree here. Ferentz A-LIKES coaching in Iowa, and B-does a pretty good job w/ what he has to work with. The Iowa admins/fanbase don't have a psychotic "win an NC every 3rd year or you suck" mentality, and tacitly acknowlege the ups and downs inherent w/ the schools geography. As far as Holgorson goes-you need to have a quality defense if you are to be considered an excellent HC. WVU doesn't even have a mediocre defense, they have a dumpster fire.
