If the Browns went to the Super Bowl, a huge part of the state would go insane. I think more so than another OSU NC.

The Bengals, my guess is not as much as the Browns. I'll leave it to people in different parts of Ohio to say what they think about an OSU vs the Bengal excitement ratio.

Overall, I believe NFL teams will come out on top.

noideaWell, in Florida when TB won, and in La when NO won, I did not see that amount of excitement.  Now when both states won the BCSCG, it was different, huge difference....
I guess the NFL is much bigger up north.......

My cousin in La, who is able to get tickets to any LSU or Saints game, did not bother to go to the NO Superbowl........but has made every LSU game since 1980......

cool

I think the fact that since most big cities have NFL teams, it skews the ratings..... or maybe not....biggrin

Who even said Cleveland could be the spot of hire?
If Dallas does not make the play off's, bye bye Garrett.
Norv Turner is getting canned in San Diego.  San Diego is nicer than luxuryville Tuscaloosa.
The New York Jets could be in the market for a coach, and a lot of coaches really aspire for the shot in the Big Apple.
Oh, I forgot living in Tuscaloosa is better than the Big Apple New York, San Diego or even the Dallas Fort Worth area, how silly to even consider those NFL markets.

You can't make sweeping generalizations off of your own personal experience.

Also, CFB has a longer history in the South than the NFL. That makes a difference. The NFL and/or professional football was largely born in Ohio & Pennsylvania (as I recall). Ohio State & Michigan (more so) have had strong teams for a century or more as well, but the NFL has long been a powerhouse.

I would guess that, say, in California, there'd be more excitement over a Super Bowl win than a USC title. Ditto the Cowboys in Texas. Etc.

Some of it is the fact that the NFL actually settles its title on the field. CFB has some "voters" taking a guess at who should play for the (supposed) NC. Some years you have two clear teams, many years not. A playoff will help CFB in that respect (and I mean a true playoff, not this idiotic BCS on steroids phony "playoff" that's coming up). Having tons of meaningless bowls with mediocre teams probably doesn't help CFB either, IMHO.

I agree with you.  I am not trying to make generalizations.  I know that the NFL is larger, since most of the population of those states are concentrated in the big cities (NYC's popualtion is almost half of the total of some states.)  You are also right about CFB being bigger in the south.

However, I am not so sure that the excitement about an NFL team winning is that great outside a select area...... that was my point.   I am not so sure SF winning a SB would generate the kind of excitement in California that USC would cause by winning the BCSCG.

Re: Saban to announce jump to NFL after BCS title game

There is a far greater chance that Meyer will coach just a year or two at Ohio State and go  to the pros. Especially a team in Ohio, given his connections there. He is younger than Saban, and he's never tried it before.

Saban has tried it, and like Holtz, it didn't suit him. Meyer is the one you guys need to be anointing as the next great Bengals or Browns coach.

Right now you need to figure out which chair you are going to sit in to watch Bama win its 3rd of 4 NCs and #7 in a row for the SEC. Bama will be the undisputed most successful CFB in history. By far. Get comfortable with the concept. You are gonna be living it for the rest of your lives.

I just enjoy sitting in my comfy chair, watching you seek validation from OSU fans. It's both entertaining and sad at the same time. But vastly more entertaining. You might be the most insecure person on the internet.

Well, that's where my money would be. Remember, California fans may like USC... or UCLA... or Stanford... or Cal. And many of the fans of those non-USC teams may not care if the Trojans win the NC game or not. Some Raiders fans may not care if the Niners win the Super Bowl either, but more fans throughout the state will care about the SB than the CFB NC.

Another factor in all this is simply that the NFL is much bigger TV-wise than CFB (again, the lack of a true CFB champion doesn't help). More people talk about it, it gets more media coverage, and so on. Thus it generates more "buzz." Everybody talks about the Super Bowl. The CFB NC game gets nowhere near that level of interest.

I have been to Tuscaloosa, hopefully I never have to go back.
A Walmart store as the epicenter of excitement, and shanty dirt floors and trailor courts abounding close by is not exactly utopia.  Your sister is your cousin in most cases.
I will take the lakes of Cleveland and the islands around there, with water ways up thru the upper pennisula of Traverse City for summer boating and fun any day of the week.
Cleveland actually has electricity and running water, and they have dentists that can fix people's teeth.

RE: Saban to announce jump to NFL after BCS title game

Some people are driven by professional success. The NFL is the best of the best. If you are successful in the NFL, you have proven yourself to be elite. The boys play on Saturday and the men play on Sunday. Saban might have that personality trait that will lead him back to the NFL to prove himself against the best. On the other hand, he might be professionally satisfied staying in college and extending his success at Alabama until he retires from coaching.

They're a weird lot. It's like they're constantly nudging you in the elbow going "We're good at football, see? See it? Huh? Huh? Jealous? You're totally jealous".

I'd try to explain what it means to be a Buckeye opposed to what it means to be an Alabama football fan, but I think it'd be lost.

Do they have board monitors that check here for anything related to 'Bama?  They are consistently the most non-B1G fans I see on this board.  It's really charming, in an off-putting sort of way, if you know what I mean.

They absolutely do! You will notice BamafaninSC posted a response a minute after I started this thread. In fact, I made the original post and then went in and made a correction/addition that took less than a minute and BamafaninSC had already responded before I could finish the correction.

What IS it about this board that attracts them and almost simultaneouslymaking it almost impossible for several of them to go away?

Saban would not have it as good in the nfl as he does at Alabama....that is a complement to Alabama.

I agree, he would have it better at tOSU,LSU,USC,Texas,ND, and many other college coaching jobs too...
IMO, he is not going back to the pro game because his wife and family don't want it and don't need it, they seem to like the college atomsphere and young kids around them....
One other reason, is the college game and pro game are totally different IMO.  Pro game is a pass first league now, while college can be both, but the rules of the college game are more in favor of the def. in college than the pro's... So, Saban gets to run his scheme's on D against a wide array of Off., while in the pro's it is mostly pro set with a few running qb's.. He gets to have a big powerful OLine that maybe lacking a little in the pass blocking department, but he can run it down your thoat to set up the run.. He does not need the superstar QB in college, just one to manage his Off. scheme's and not screw it up and make a few big throws a game... In some ways I think college is a more physical game then the pro's. They have more physical practices no doubt and more of them...I am sure people will disagree with that statement but if look at college coaches who have came from the pro's without any college background of coaching, most of their teams are not very physical due to practicing like a pro team... Re: Saban to announce jump to NFL after BCS title game

Saban may be mentioned with the Bear and Woody with 3 or 4 Titles... he could...

I was talking more about getting to a number of titles, wins, longevity, or such that make landmark coaches in College Football.. The Bear is one, Woody is another, JoePa (until last year), legend type, .
So if Saban wanted to be grouped and maybe someone like Urban could do it with 3 or 4 Titles with tOSU...

I love Saban's style, I think he is a monster coach, respected his leadership of his teams, plays my type of football.  This is jmo on why Saban would want to stay at Bama, instead of going to NFL.

Saban has won 3 National Titles, he may get his fourth next month, and he has a monster program that by all accounts should be in line to play for a title every other year for at least the next 5 years.

So Saban might be looking to win that magic number of 6 National Titles, and go down as a Top 3 All-Time D1 Coach.
He has 3 MNC in 9 years and possibly a 4th in 10 years and he isn't on the level of Woody.

No wonder people hate our fanbase. He is winning in a more competetive environment (not talking about SEC) today's college football is much more difficult to win in.

I agree. It's one thing to have a successful run in a few years, it's another to be consistently good over a period of decades, as Bear, Woody, & John McKay were. Not knocking Saban, just pointing out why some others are so highly regarded even now.

I would assume the attraction is the constant and never-ending talk about Alabama here.

I thought that was a fairly easy conclusion to arrive at, but I guess some people will have trouble putting it together noidea
