Saban to announce jump to NFL after BCS title game

Saban to announce jump to NFL after BCS title game

Just a gut feeling that he will, but Pete Carroll and Jim Harbaugh have had success in the NFL and Nick Saban will have nothing left to prove in college and, given his age, his NFL window of opportunity may be shrinking. Given the right situation, I think he'll do it and be successful. A two year sample in Miami is hardly much of an indicator of whether he can coach in the NFL. The Dolphins underachieved his first year and faded late in his second year.

Pete Carroll's first two years in Seattle were nothing to write home about but he has a solid team now.

Happy? Not really. I could care less. Not a Saban fan, a Browns fan or an Alabama fan. Alabama will be successful with or without Saban.

I have wondered why Kirby Smart hasn't taken a head coaching gig yet. It could well be that he's the heir apparent to Saban, and is just waiting for him to retire or move to the NFL. It could also be that Smart knows this is going to happen sooner rather than later.

That is a possibility. Or that he likes where he is at and what he is doing. But he did interview with Auburn....go figure?

Difference between those two and Saban is that Saban's more tightly wound than a sphincter in the Arctic Ocean i.e. unable to adjust/adapt/let go when things aren't going well in the parity-driven NFL and recuperate to fight another day. Did you see him in Miami or even when he was the Browns D Coordinator for that matter? Couldn't tell if each press conference was going to end with him punching out a reporter or with blood spewing out of his ears. flushed

Re: Saban to announce jump to NFL after BCS title game

Saban's link to the new Brown's owner is well documented, as is his past ties to the Brown's.
Saban could jump wanting to validate his previous NFL stint was a fluke, and he has proven all he can at college at Toledo, MSU, LSU and Bama.
NFL coach and GM is a lot about power as well.
Saban can also ride out his stint at Bama.
Either way he is a hot ticket, and Bama would not have a hard time replacing him with the talent in house, the salary they will pay and resources if he opts for the NFL.

Re: Saban to announce jump to NFL after BCS title game

Coach Saban might go, but I highly doubt it.  Quick, name me 10 past or present NFL coaches that are considered great.  I bet you could do it with college coaches.

If Coach Saban wants money, Alabama can pay him.  If Coach Saban wants to be higher profile, tell me, what do you hear about most, powerful college coaches, or powerful NFL coaches?  College coaches control states and regions, not so much NFL coaches.  For every Carroll there are two or three Spurriers, ones that tried the NFL and did not like it.  I would see O'Brien from PSU going before Coach Saban.

If he was younger, he might, but he is in his 60's.  To take over any other program, and rebuild (and face it, it would take longer to build an NFL team than a college team) takes time, and I do not think he wants to invest that much time anymore.

This really is a made up story, based in speculation, from a radio station in Cleveland...

Lombardi, Noll, Parcells, Halas, Walsh, Landry, Paul Brown, Shula, Gibbs, and Madden.  Its really not that hard when you just think about historical NFL franchises.  Also, take into account that there is significantly more college football teams and the NFL is a younger league.  If I was Saban, I would go to the NFL.  Not for the challenge but I just think dealing with the NCAA and recruiting all the time is such a wear on a person.

I agree this is not likely, but the one thing about Saban that fits is his ultra-competitive nature. Can he stand to have failed at the NFL? But yeah, the culture there is anti-Sabanesque.

I don't really see it happening.  Maybe if he gets bored of winning at Alabama, but I think at this point he'll be there until he retires.

Re: Saban to announce jump to NFL after BCS title game

Current Redskins coach Shanahan with multiple Super Bowls and the Redskins are coming back again, two time Super Bowl Giants coach Tom Coughlin, ex Steelers coach Cowher, Bill Belichick and rising Harbaugh are current coaches that will fall in there.
Probably even 40 year old Steelers current head coach Tomlin, who has one Super Bowl win and played in another.  Their current resumes and continued success for a few of the younger guys get them in the Hall of Fame, that was easy, you stole mine below real quick.
That was real easy to do.
The comment a Cleveland station started this rumor, comical.
It is all over media outlets all across the US, and even linking the Cowboys at times if they  can their coach.  That comment is one of someone that did not research, do does not watch TV or listen to a sports radio show lately.

Re: Saban to announce jump to NFL after BCS title game

Not that I put any stock in this speculation at all, but in general I would comment that this is the downside of the SEC 'hired gun' Coach approach. This system relegates places like LSU and Florida to eventually have bitter tastes after they are burned by Coaches who do not have any particular allegiance to the state or University. OSU tends to go after at least home state guys who view OSU as The final destination (with Cooper as our exception). But we'll see. I'm sure the Florida faithful would love it if Urban burned us, but I encourage them not to hold breath.

Re: Saban to announce jump to NFL after BCS title game

Saban still has a ton to prove if he wants to go down with the likes of the Bear, Woody, etc.

Saban has won 3 National Titles, he may get his fourth next month, and he has a monster program that by all accounts should be in line to play for a title every other year for at least the next 5 years.

So Saban might be looking to win that magic number of 6 National Titles, and go down as a Top 3 All-Time D1 Coach.

There are people out there that only go by NFL Championships, or championships in general to rank someone.

I think that is a mistake.

Marv Levy had some good teams, hell he had some GREAT teams. By all accounts the first two super bowls the Bills should/could have won. Those other two against Dallas were never gonig to happen. As good as the Bills were, Dallas was a little bit better.

I agree, Marv Levy was a damm good coach.
