Looks like Oregon's attempt to avoid a formal hearing has failed. Yahoo Sports is reporting that the NCAA infractions board is tentatively being scheduling an appearance for Oregon sometime in early spring.

lets hope they recover fast or our out of conference schedule will be terrible the years we play them.

Oregon is not going to recover from this.

Oregon will recover if Daddy Knight sticks around after the dust settles. If not, they might be down for quite some time. They don't have the program history or breadth of booster support to withstand the long term effects of probation, bowl bans, and lost scholarships. Rebuilding elite level program momentum is hard enough for the blue blood programs... and Oregon doesn't have the same cachet.

How do you try to avoid a hearing?  They got caught with their hand in the cookie jar..

socky a lot of programs will try and either work out a punishment the ncaa agrees to or dispute the allegations totally.

we dont really know what the deal has been here so far because the people in charge havent been giving daily updates to keep oregons problem in the national news.

using uga as an example say they are accused of breaking an ncaa rule.

the ncaa comes in and investigates and finds they did indeed break the rule.

uga offers to forfiet 5 scholarships and self impose a bowl ban.

the ncaa is satisfied with our punishment and thats the end of it. no hearing needed.

on the other hand we either say we didnt do it or offer a self punishment they arent satisfied with then you go before the hearing panel.

Nothing will come of this because people will have to talk and those people seem to either leave the system or drop off the planet. Look for a 2-5 year probation -- no scholarship or bowl ban.

ha, no kidding....

however, to be fair, oregon hasn't gotten the constant attention of espn like OSU had received.  Our misery occurred during a pretty slow time of year and I can recall OSU showing up on college football live day after day for weeks just to talk about the scandal.  this without gene smith's dundering press conferences...

dirty thats part of the down side of having so many ohio state/big ten people with air time on espn.

for herbstreit, speilman, smith, howard, holtz, corso, millen ect ohio state is a big deal.

i think when all this was happening most ohio state people viewed gee and smith constant media stuff as "defending our program" but all they really did was kept it on the front page.

sec fans knew from his time at vanderbilt gee was the gift that keeps giving.

i guess.  i think we may disagree to a certain extent regarding who steers the programming and editorial agenda of ESPN broadcasts, but that's another discussion.

anyway, i think you're partially correct regarding gee and smith.  it truly didn't take too long for most OSU fans to recognize the harm smith in particular was doing each time he opened his mouth.  quite honestly i think most fans are still incredulous that he has a job.

I hope they crash and burn. I never liked Oregon. They beg for attention and lose in big games. they are frauds on all levels.

Willy Lyle already openly admitted everything including how Kelly paid him $25k to broker influence with Laque Seastrunk. When the university got wind of the payment, Lyle quickly pulled together a bogus recruiting report including a report on a deceased player. Normally Lyle receives around $5-7k for these reports. I heard Lyle admit all of this on a local radio interview. If there is any justice forhead coaches directly paying for players, Oregon will get slammed.

NCAA enforcement has a summary disposition process that schools can use to avoid face-to-face hearing with the COI (committee on infractions):

What is a Summary Disposition?

Step 1

Investigative findings from the institution, involved parties and the NCAA enforcement staff are submitted to the COI along with proposed penalties, which are proposed by the institution or involved persons. The NCAA enforcement staff is not involved with penalties and does not make recommendations on the penalties in a summary disposition

Step 2

COI reviews the information and determines:

1. If a thorough and complete investigation has been conducted
2. If the penalties are appropriate

Step 3

If the COI accepts the findings and agrees with the penalties it will issue a report and the case is concluded.

If the COI does not agree with the findings, or it believes the violations are so serious a full hearing is warranted, it can reject the summary disposition and move forward with a hearing.

If the COI agrees with the findings, but does not believe the penalties are fitting, it can suggest additional penalties. If the institution and/or involved individual(s) do not agree with these penalties, they can request an expedited hearing where only information regarding the penalties is discussed. The institution and/or involved individuals can appeal the additional penalties through the appeals process.

with sanctions looming,  Chip Kelly will bolt to the NFL just like  Petey did..
this should end the Ducks dominance for the past 3 years or so.
will be interesting to watch the Pac-12 race next year..  Stanford, oregon, SC, UCLA, Cal,  arizona all look like contenders.

I think Stanford and UCLA is going to run that league for a few years
